Chapter 3-Family Concern

Chapter 3-Family Concern

Oct 19, 2022

"AN EXPLOSION?!" Alex burst through the door of their home with her arms opened wide and a furious expression on her face. Daimian clicked his crutches as he stepped in behind her. "WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL?!"
"At least we got out pretty quick."
Alex angrily moved through the living room as her brother crutched closer to the kitchen. "GOD, who the hell would do this to DAN? To do this, they'd have to be a heartless, brainless piece of SHI-"
"Oh, my babies!" Faith came rushing to the entrance of the apartment, Alex still cursing in the corner near the front door. Daimian looked up as his mother got closer and hugged him tightly through the crutches. She let go, putting her hands on her son's shoulders and looking sweetly into his eyes. "Is everyone safe? What all happened out there?"
"It's alright, Mom. There was a-" Daimian paused and looked at the floor before peering back at his sister, now standing somewhat silently by the door. "An explosion at Dan's place."
"Oh no, is he alright," Faith asked, tilting her head to the side as she looked at her concerned son with worried eyes.
"Yeah, he should be fine in a bit," Daimian looked back up at his mother, pressing his lips tightly together and making a slight pop before continuing, "I heard them say it's a lot of burns, though."
"Poor Dan," Faith looked back at the dining table near the kitchen. "Well, dinner's on the table," she said, pointing back to it, "so why don't you two get ready to eat? A meal would probably do everyone a little good right now." The siblings agreed and went to wash up in the bathroom. When they were done, they went to the table and got their food, heading to the couch on the other side of the room and placing their plates on the coffee table. A little time later, Faith sat in her recliner near the siblings and clasped her hands together, elbows on her knees. "So what just... what happened earlier? How bad did it get?"
Alex swallowed a bit of rice before she set her plate down and pointed at Daimian. "Well, from what I understand, him and Dan were chillin' in the café before they closed a bit early. When Dame went to close the blinds or whatever, he saw a bunch of light, flew through one of the windows, and landed on his ass. He got carried to the cops, we talked to them a bit," Alex looked down at her sprawled-out brother, basking his back in the carpeted floor of their small living space next to the coffee table with a blue ice-pack on his broken foot. "-And here we are," she finished, looking back at Faith and giving her a slight shrug.
Faith sat up in her chair as Alex picked her plate back up and continued eating. "Well, I hope they find whoever did all this. No one messes with Dan and my kids like that."
"Very sweet," Alex said with a mouthful as Faith picked at her plate and started eating. For the next half hour, the family sat around the living room in a slight silence only separated by the sounds of their chewing. Eventually, Faith got up, taking Alex's plate as they finished. Alex looked down at her brother still lying on the floor as she got up from the couch. "Hey Dame, you need anymore ice?"
"You might just need to put me in the damn freezer," Daimian chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck with his right hand before slightly wincing in pain.
"Hopefully the police can catch who did this," Faith called out from the kitchen. She put the dishes in the sink and started to rinse them off. Alex started to walk to the door frame to be with her mother as Daimian poorly attempted to reach for his crutches from the floor. As Alex made it to the the counter, her brother was on his foot and clicking away around the shabby area.
"You know what, I think I'll just go to my room. Maybe sleep this pain off."
Faith looked back at her son as she started washing the used plates. "Did you eat anything, Daimian?"
"Not too hungry," Daimian said, closing the door of his room. Faith looking back at the dishes as the handle clicked in the distance.
   "You think he'll be alright?"
Alex rested an elbow on the counter, looking back at the somewhat worn bedroom door. "Yeah, I guess..." Alex looked back at her mother, lifting her hand in the air as she spoke. "Dan kinda made me his 'guardian angel' or whatever for a little bit, so I guess I'll be checking on him for a while. Or not,” she squinted her eyes slightly. “He worded it kind of weird, so I’m not too sure what to actually do."
Faith looked up at Alex's face sweetly. "Well either way, I bet he feels safer already."
"Well, even without me," Alex started, turning back to the door, "he's still pretty tough."
Meanwhile, Daimian laid on his bed with his back in the dark bedroom, eyes closed in light thought. 'God, this day has been a hell of a mess,' he looked up at the dim popcorn ceiling weakly, his left hand on his flimsy tank top he changed into when he got home. 'First I'm in a school fight. Then after that, I get launched from Dan's café as it bursts into flames... How did all of this happen? What did Daniel Leonardo, the greatest  café man in the world, do to deserve all of this?' Slightly squinting, he looked around the room. 'What did I do to deserve this? I mean, the hell? Is the world trying to tell me something? Is it... that I should AVENGE DAN?! TO HELP THIS CITY FROM ANOTHER ATTACK FROM THIS GUY?!'
"OH MY GOD, THAT'S IT!" Daimian rose wide-eyed, loudly whispering to himself before having to hold his back from a slight pinching. He stared at the foot of his bed with his pupils dilated in a somewhat shock, thinking to himself once again. 'Something is telling me I have to go after this guy! Like a movie or something! I gotta avenge Dan! I gotta bring that guy justice! I- wait a second...' Daimian looked up and caught himself. 'How the hell do I even START something like that? I mean, first I'd have to track that guy down from face alone, and I can't just, like, kill him.' He turned his head to the right, looking at the wall in front of him. 'Well, not legally, anyway.'
"So Alex, do you have any fallback plans since all of this happened?"
Daimian heard his mother's voice through the slim crack of light from the door, which was slightly creaking. He started to get out of the bed, carrying his back slightly while trying to hobble on one leg. He winced with every step, even when he didn't put pressure on the broken foot. He looked in the crack of the door, which was getting slightly wider as the seconds passed.
"I don't know. I mean, Chell offered me a place at the salon... What, a month ago? Might do that. I don't know, I was kinda looking forward to working with Dan. I guess I'd feel like I'd finally be paying him back for everything he's done for. us."
Daimian grabbed onto the shifting door, shutting his eyes as he stepped closer to the frame. Inching closer to the wall, he heard his mother. "You still can, honey. You and Dame can go to the hospital every once in a while, when we can. Maybe bring him flowers or something nice while he recovers."
He laid his back to the cool wall as he adjusted the door to hear the conversation a bit better, just as Alex replied to Faith. "I'll probably do that. I just hope the asshole who did this gets arrested or... something. No way this was an accident."
Daimian silently closed the door to the room, leaving him alone in the dark. He silently looked down at the floor for what felt like a few minutes before tilting his gaze up to look forward. "Well, if my own sister says so, I guess I have to do something," Daimian said raising his eyebrows.
"Okay, so how do I approach this situation? What should I do once I find this bitch?" Daimian quietly asked himself as he leaped onto his bed. He sat up, staring into the dark space across from his bed, before nodding upward to himself. "You know what? I think I'll just become a superhero." He stroked his chin with his hand and grinned as his eyes slid to the left side of the room. "Yeah, I'll catch that guy by surprise if I do that. I don't have much to work with, but I can do something." He paused for a second before putting his hand down. "But where to start…"
"OH," Daimian perked up, "I need a name, of course! Come're phone." He lunged for his cell phone on the end table next to his bed, turning it on and pulling up the search engine. "Now, what names aren't taken yet? I need something dark and or mysterious so that I can strike fear into this criminal guy." He typed in a couple names that came to mind, slowly going through a small list in his head.
   "The Shadow? Taken. Damn."
   "Shade? Dammit! What about... Nope-"
"How abouuu- huh?" Daimian looked at his phone slightly surprised. "Nothing for that? Huh," he murmured as he put his phone back on the end table, using the light to grab a lightly used notepad right next to it. "Well, there's a name. Now I need a symbol to show I'm unique, I guess." For the next few minutes, he scribbled some symbol ideas on a few pieces of paper, most of which were just random shaped. Eventually, he found the one he liked. A simple shape that resembled an equilateral triangle, but the two sides from the top point were curved inward while the bottom side bumped out, still having only three lines and points. "Huh, that's not too bad. I kinda like it." He set the notepad back on the end table and turned his phone off.
"Now for the hard parts," Daimian paused for a moment, clasping his hands together and setting his index fingers on his lips, "finding the guy and making a suit for myself. For the first thing, I can ask around town, maybe search the internet for the report at the café." He laid down on his back, setting his head back on his pillow. "And my costume?" Daimian closed his eyes and smiled. "Well, I'm sure I can pull something pretty cool together."
