Obscurity-Book 1

Chapter 4-A Hero is Born

Chapter 4-A Hero is Born

Oct 19, 2022

Over the course of the next week, Daimian put his plan into action. For a few days, he gathered supplies to craft his suit. He started by getting the base of it, searching a trunk from under his bed that had some old clothes. In it, he found a long sleeved v-neck shirt he remembered his sister used to wear every once in a while. He put it on, noticing it was a little long at the bottom and shrugged it off, deciding to use it anyway. A little after he found the base, he left to go to a dollar store not too far from the housing facility, getting a pair of cheap swimming goggles and pale latex gloves.
Once he came back from the store, he got to work on a mask using some black cloth from another old shirt from the trunk, cutting it out and using a mannequin head as he worked on sewing pieces together. Every day, he worked to get it a little tighter, only needing to work on it for three days. Occasionally, he tried it on just to make sure it fit.
Every once in a while, he would wear a few pieces of the suit just to make sure it all flowed together, sometimes being caught off guard by his sister. When Alex entered the room, she wouldn't seem to care too much since she only ever saw Daimian in her old shirt before telling him to do something. If he couldn't hide anything else, he at least put the mask behind his back before anyone noticed what it was.
While he worked on his suit, Daimian tried to gather data on the man who caused the explosion, remembering the description of what he saw. He searched various newspapers, websites, and any other place he could think of to find out what happened, even making a drawing based on what he remembered. Under his bed, he kept a little quark board that had pictures of his findings and thin pieces of string connecting different evidence together. Through the week, he would find little clues about this man. His few social media accounts, where he worked, how he got around town, none of it seemed to be as useful as Daimian had hoped. Then one night, he saw him on the street walking around. He followed the man to an alley near where the explosion took place, trying not to get too close and surprise him.
It was just a hunch, but Daimian thought that the man might make the same route again the next day and decided that he would be there to strike. The next night, Daimian suited up. He opened the black trunk and took out a plastic bag that carried all of the pieces, putting them on one by one. He started with a pair of white sweatpants and the v-neck shirt followed by a thick, white sash he tied around his waist to better hold the loose bottom of the shirt. After he had these on, he put on the swimming goggles then his mask, all of the pieces fitting almost perfectly.
"You know, it took me about, like, a week or so," Daimian started to himself as he put on one of the latex gloves, "but I think I've finally got everything I need pulled together." He swiftly put on the other glove, turning to face himself in the mirror with a big smile. He put one hand on his hip as he rested the other on his side. "I'm ready to get this guy."
That night, the man slowly walked down the dimly lit sidewalk in a light outfit of just a t-shirt and jeans, taking his eyes off of the café behind him. He turned to his right, leaving the iron pavilion behind him with a nervous energy, his stressed eyes darting around the alley he had just entered. Looking at the bricks on one wall and the bricks on the other, he continued walking with a slight fear in his step, not noticing the lenses staring him down from atop the pavilion.
   Thoomp
The man stopped dead in his tracks, staring out of the alley exit into the street ahead as he heard the sound of something falling behind him. The sounds of limp steps started to echo around him as he started to turn around, sweat covering his brow and his eyes widening as his pupils followed the noise behind him. The steps sounded closer now, with a bit more pep in them, as his chin was almost over his right shoulder. As he started to turn his torso, he saw a shadowed figure stop behind him.
   PTOOPH-
The man fell to the ground after he felt a fist launch at his right cheek. He rubbed it, inching back to the wall of graffiti in an attempt to get away from the attacker. "Who are you?" he started to stammer, "Wh- what do you want?!"
"Robert Mann," Daimian clenched his fist in rage as he looked into Robert's eyes through his cheap goggles. "My name is Obscurity. And what I want-" Daimian paused for a moment as Robert got to his feet again. When he was standing straight, he was pushed against one of the walls by Daimian, pointing up at his shaken face and causing him to let out a small noise. "-Is to know the reason you almost KILLED people for some damn MONEY!!!"
Robert tried to back his face away as Daimian's got closer. In a small voice, he asked Daimian "i-is this about the café thing last week?"
"OH, so that WAS YOU!" Daimian pointed harder at Robert, who was being shoved further into the brick. "So you orchestrated the whole thing, and for WHAT? The near DEATH of some GOOD PEOPLE?! WAS IT WORTH IT, ROB? HUH?!"
"I-I'm sorry if I hurt one of your friends," Robert blurted out, closing his eyes thinking Daimian was going to attack him again. "I-I had to do it to see my family again, to help them out of a horrible situation, please don't hurt me for that." Daimian started to loosen his grip on him and let him breath for the first time in what felt like hours. "Please understand that I didn't mean any harm, honest," Robert relaxed his arms and started to calm down slightly as Daimian stood across from him. "I thought it was closed! PLEASE!" He fell to his knees, almost pleading to Daimian before he noticed what he was doing and started to regain his composure.
Daimian paused, looking at the older man trying to get back on his feet before turning his head away from him, instead gazing at the wall in the same direction as the café before sighing. "Huh, you almost never hear about a cowardly Southerner. Tell you what..." Daimian turned back to glare at Robert. "You make sure your family is safe and away from whatever harm you're fighting for, but if I find you harming anyone else or I find out you were lying to me," Daimian clenched his fist, holding it up to the man’s frightened face, "I will personally kick your ass no matter what. Got that?"
Robert nodded nervously as he started looking out of the alleyway. "Oh-Okay sir, you got it. Anything else?"
Daimian looked back at him for a second. "Yeah, actually." He looked calmly at Robert frozen with fear. "A dollar would be nice."
   "W- what?"
Daimian rolled a hand around his wrist. "Well, you know, you just robbed a place, I figure you'd have some cash from it. Don't worry, I'll pay it back at some point, I swear. It's just uh, donation to help that guy out, it'll be anonymous or whatever."
"O-okay," Robert said, pulling out his wallet and reluctantly taking out a dollar bill. He handed it off to Daimian, who swiftly took it up and stuffed it on his belt.
"Thanks, man," Daimian nodded with a slight smirk.
"O-okay, I'm uh, wait," Robert started to put his wallet in his back pocket before he paused for a moment. "What are you gonna do-" As he looked up, he noticed that he was alone. He looked around the alley confused, hearing light metal pings where he originally walked from that were soon silenced. "-now?"
"Ya know, I actually thought about that for a bit before I got here..." Daimian's voice seemed to be coming from up above, but Robert couldn't seem to tell, still looking around nervously as the voice continued. "And I know one thing's for sure, pal.” Daimian turned away from the top of the building he was looking from as he finished.
"Your city is under the protection of an OBSCURITY."
