Chapter 5-City Patrol

Chapter 5-City Patrol

Oct 19, 2022

"Hey Mom, do you know where Dame is? I think he left school without me today and I haven’t seen him since." Alex walked through the front door at about three in the afternoon, moving to the kitchen to ask her mother the question.
Faith slowly turned around from washing the dishes to look back at Alex, who was in the door frame next to her. "Right, he told me that he was going to be in a comic club with his friends after school today or something like that. He didn’t tell you?" She turned back to the dishes as Alex squinted, looking back at the apartment door suspiciously and thinking to herself if what she heard was true.
"Damn," Daimian said to himself from the rooftop of one of the lower buildings downtown, "it's usually a lot harder to convince her to let me do something like THIS." Putting his long, black v-neck over a newly added white shirt, he stared down at the streets below through an even newer pair of goggles with much rounder lenses than the previous set. "Now, it's been a few days since I started my prowl out on the city by tracking down Robert. However, today's my first actual patrol of these streets." He put on his black mask after suiting up the rest of his items and set his leg over the ledge of the building, peering over the slightly bustling crowds. "It's my job as this cities new protector to look out and be diligent for the sake of it's citizens."
"But until evil strikes, I can just chill." He sat on the rough concrete of the building’s roof and grabbed his backpack from on his feet, unzipping it to take out a slightly busted silver tape recorder. "There," he told himself as he placed it on the edge of the building and pressed play. The tape started to roll with a shuttering sound, Daimian looking in the distance and singing along with the somewhat muddily recorded music.
"Doo dooo, doo dooo doooo, doo doo doo dooo dooo doo doo-" Daimian held out his hands with a smile as he continued singing. "We're no strangers to looove. You know the rules, and so do IIIIII-" He sang through the song until it was finished, even continuing the mixtape of various 80s hits for a few songs until stopping around halfway through the A-side. After he put the player back in his backpack, he slumped at the edge of the building with his arms at his sides, staring at the other side of the roof blankly. Eventually, he stretched over to his bag and pulled out a book and pencil, setting them on his lap and taking out a sheet of geometry homework from in between the many pages. He fiddled with a few problems, occasionally making comments about them out loud. "Okay, so if 9 is B, then what the hell is C?"
The hours of the afternoon passed swiftly. At around 5:46, Daimian looked away from a hard cover book to check his phone right next to him. He picked it up and noticed the time, jumping up and almost dropping the book from three stories up. "OH GOD, it's almost 6! I gotta head home." Picking the book up and putting it in his backpack, he rushed to the edge of the building near an alleyway.
Around 6, Alex stared at the front door, waiting for her brother to come in. She clasped her fingers over her eyes and pressed them slightly, slumping back into the couch and looking at the television set. Almost as soon as she turned her head, Daimian came through the door, his backpack slung over one shoulder and his white shirt an almost light gray from his sweat. He calmly held up his hand and waved as he stepped from the building’s hallway. "Hey guys, sorry I'm a bit late."
"Ah, welcome back Daimian," Faith walked up and hugged her son before kissing him on his cheek. "Did you have a good day? How was the club?"
Alex slumped up from the couch and walked over to the two by the front doorway, eyeing Daimian as she did. "Yeah, how was this comic club, kid?"
"It was pretty fun, honestly." Daimian tilted his head at his sister, who had a stern look on her face as her brother walked off to their bedroom without looking back or taking off his backpack, closing the door almost silently.
"I swear, something's going on with him, I just know it." Alex walked behind Faith, who let out a little yip as she jumped from her daughter’s sudden words. She then turned to her and looked at her daughter with kind eyes.
"Oh, don't be so hard on him, Alex. He's had a rough few weeks, but he should be back to normal in no time."
Alex reluctantly turned her attention back on where her brother went as Faith started stepping away to prepare dinner for the family. "Sure... He'll be fine..."
Back in his room, Daimian pulled out the black trunk from under his bed and put all of the components of his suit in a crumpled plastic bag. "Alright, so it didn't seem like there was much activity happening today," he pondered to himself as he closed the trunk and shoved it back under his bed. "I doubt that there would be any sort of attack too close to the same time frame as the café, but I can't be too careful. I'll probably patrol more on the weekend, but checking after school every day shouldn't hurt. Just gotta be stealthy about it and I should be in the clear." Daimian lowered his eyelids and smirked as he looked around the musky room. "This is gonna be fun."
Over the three days since his first patrol, Daimian suited back up and sneaked up to the top of the same building, one of the corners of the second busiest area of downtown, a pizza parlor across the street from Dan's café. On the first day he went back out, he got up to the edge of the building and opened his arms wide, almost announcing to the city "DAY TWO!" He waited for a while before the lights dimmed alongside the setting sun, causing him to slump back around the building's roof and head back to the housing facility.
The next day, he went to the same area, making the same pose, and saying to himself "Day Three," before putting his arms to his side ready to spend the next few hours sitting there staring at the ground. He would look over to his left to see the construction crew still working on the café. He thought about Dan and how they couldn't visit him for another week if not more, still waiting to hear about his condition from the hospital. When he noticed a construction worker looking up at him confused, Daimian just gave a shy wave and smiled before turning back to look at the rest of the street. He left half an hour earlier than he didpreviously, taking his time walking home.
The day after was a Thursday, with Daimian almost reluctantly going back to the same roof top, where sat at the edge and almost whispered to himself, "day four." He still watched for an hour or so before he laid his slightly tender back on the warm Spring concrete with his legs still hanging up on the side of the building. He watched the clouds roll by before getting on his feet and grabbing his backpack. Looking to his right toward the alley he would normally jump down and change in, Daimian noticed the darkness of the gap between the buildings, tilting his head and squinting through his goggles to try and get a clearer view.
Setting his backpack down, he slowly walked over to the opening of the alley, peering down the three stories worth of fire escape he went down through the past week. He let out a small 'hm' and walked back to the other side of the building, still looking at the gap in front of him. 'This gap,' he thought to himself, 'should be easy enough to jump over.' Still looking at the gap, he pressed the heel of his foot to the edge of the building and set his body into a running stance. He slowed his breathing before bolting to the other side. He ran across the roof before getting halfway, thinking that he wouldn't have enough momentum to cross the gap.
Daimian's feet skidded to a halt, stopping just before they could clip the siding of the roof. He looked down into the depths of the alley, now seeing it in a lighter tone, and sighed. He walked back across the building and grabbed his bag, telling himself "eh, was worth a shot I guess." Still in his Obscurity outfit, he slid down into the alleyway when he saw the streets practically empty. He looked around to make sure no one was truly watching and stepped behind a garbage bin to trade his clothes for a shirt and a pair of red gym shorts. As he walked out into the street, he took out his phone and dialed his mother's number. He put the device up to his ear, hearing it ring a few times before Faith's voice greeted him.
"Hey mom. Yeah, the club let out a bit early today."
"Okay, I'll be home soon, don't worry. I'm on my way right now."
"Alright. Love you too, Mom. Yeah, see ya in a little bit."
Daimian put his phone in one of his short's pockets as he paced back home. As he was about to turn a corner and cross the street lights, he noticed two black police cars whiz past him, turning to his right as they rode down the street with their sirens blasting. He looked for a minute before he started walking again, noticing the cross-walk was clear. Shrugging, he asked himself, "Eh, who am I to deny the police work," before he continued walking.
Almost as soon as he said those words, he stopped before he set foot in the road and turned around hastily. "WAIT, THAT MEANS CRIME," he exclaimed as he made a mad dash back to the alley he just left. He looked around for the coast to be clear before jumping back behind the same garbage bin and pulling his suit out of his backpack. Having a slight difficulty in the shadows, he quickly took off his shirt and shorts to change them. In just over a minute, he was able to get most of the pieces onto his body. "Dammit, stupid belt." Daimian prodded in his backpack, trying to find the long strip of white cloth he would tie around his waist. Checking one of the corners of the bag, he grabbed onto it and pulled it out before securing it onto himself.
Peering out of the dark, he once again dashed down the street, following a newly arriving police vehicle to the scene of the crime. "God, what's all the hub-ub?" he asked himself as he crossed a different street and ran past the reconstruction of the café, only focusing on the road ahead. Making a right by crossing another street, he stopped next to the glistening city fountain to look at the scene.
Over by a massive pawn shop, he could see a swarm of police officers and their various equipment. A van pulled in next to the cars he noticed before and a few more officers exited. 'I don't know what the hell's goin' on over there,' Daimian thought to himself, 'but I just know I have to get a closer look."
