Obscurity-Book 1

Chapter 10-Team Up

Chapter 10-Team Up

Oct 19, 2022

That night, Daimian had a hard time falling asleep. In the early hours of the morning, he remembered the events that had just happened not even a few hours ago, replaying them in his mind the best he could. There were little things he tried to think of, the scars on Killy's body, the eyes and demeanor of Nino Man, the expressions of the people in the room. Lunging his torso off of his mattress, he turned to see his sister sleeping in the bed across the room, curled in a little ball. He sat watching her tense up and release as she clung to her sheets.
Daimian turned back to face the foot of his own bed, thinking to himself what he'd seen. Looking up at the wall towards the door, he got up, taking his phone and notebook from the end table, and tiptoed to the door in an attempt to keep his sister asleep. Creaking the door open, he peaked into the dark area without a sound, weary that Faith might see him. He crept out of the door, slightly squeaking it behind him as the knob clasped with the frame. Not long after, he made it to the living room area only illuminated by the light of his phone.
Sitting back down on the couch in the early morning, he took out his notebook, turning to the pages that he had made detailing his allies and supposed enemies. Flipping through his notes, he took out the picture from a newspaper detailing the first time he had fought Killy, blurry but recognizable enough to work. He looked at the picture closely, thinking he'd seen this man before. As he kept his eye on the photo, Alex's phone lit up from the coffee table, making Daimian jump a bit. Squinting to try and blur the light, he picked it up and swiped up to unlock it. He read one of the new texts from Chell about a video circulating.
[Alex, bro, check this video from the party.]
Daimian started the video and saw the flashing lights of Chell’s room. In the mess of color, he saw the front door being broken open from the outside, seeing the people scattering away from the door as Killy crawled through the jagged hole, gripping the kid he saw earlier by the throat. As he watched the video, an important question came to Daimian’s mind; ‘how did Killy know about the party in the first place?’
Digging through what he knew about Killy, he grabbed the notes he made on the graduation ceremony, the people he saw in the crowd, the people looking at Chell before she left. Looking further into the notes, he read his description of the crowd.
Male: Graduating, large build, dark hair, stern look.
"Wait," Daimian whispered to himself as he looked over the notes. He looked at the sketch he made of the people in the group, notably the one with black hair. 'Shit,' he thought to himself as he compared the sketches to the photos, then to his memory, back to the photos to the sketch. His head struck back as he looked them over, noticing the similarities to all of the references he had. He wiped his now sweating face as he watched the video again in disbelief. It was the man at the graduation ceremony.
Then he thought back further. A look of pure fear and anger washed through Daimian's eyes as he remembered the day at the café, what had happened, who was there. This man, Killy, was there, he was sure of it. In fact, he remembered the man coming in that day was almost exactly how he looked the day they met as Killy and Obscurity. A black tank top, obsidian hair, dark shades that would become thick goggles. Daimian knew that it had to be him. Flipping through the pages, he found the page he made for Robert Mann. 'If anyone knows where this guy it, it's gotta be him,' Daimian thought as he closed the notebook and set Alex's phone back where he found it. 'Thing is, I gotta find a way to reach him.'
The next day, Daimian used the family laptop to look back on Robert's social media records to find where he could be within the week. After a little digging, he found that he would be hanging around one of the bars downtown with some friends later in the night. Figuring out where he was going to be, Daimian quickly grabbed his things, requesting he go to the library to hang out with friends.
At around nine that same day, Robert was already half-wasted with his pals when he sat down at one of the booths to order another round. As he laughed, he tilted his head to look out the front door window. Even in the half-drunk state he was in, Robert could tell who was waiting outside for him. "One minute, I gotta get a bit of air." He stepped out of the seat, looking around the other windows to see if he was being watched anywhere else. He opened the door to Daimian in his Obscurity suit standing just a few feet away from him in the light of the street.
"Rob," Daimian said in a softer demeanor than when they first met, "I need to ask you about something."
Robert rubbed his back as he looked back at his friends. "Could I talk tomorrow? I'm a little busy right now."
"It shouldn't take long, maybe five minutes at most."
   "Oh, alright I guess."
"Great," Daimian said, pulling a picture from his sleeve and showing it to Robert. "Do you recognize this man? People call him Killy." Robert's eyes grew wider the more he examined the photo, eventually wiping his face with his hands before looking around the street nervously.
"I- I don't know him. Sorry." Robert started to turn back to the bar entrance before he felt his arm get grabbed by Daimian's pasty, gloved hand.
"Rob, buddy, it's okay." Daimian watched Robert turn around in a nervous sweat. "I think I saw this guy leave the café some time before it blew. I just want to know if you've seen him or if you've worked with him before."
Robert intensely quivered as Daimian started to press the questions onto him. "I'm sorry man, I just, I don't know this man from anything other than the news. I-"
"Dude," Daimian tried to snap Robert out of a seemingly tranced state, "if this man hurt you, I want to know. I'm here to help you out. Can’t do that if you’re not honest."
"I-" Robert tugged on his coat, causing Daimian to loosen his grip. "No, I'm sorry, Obscurity, but I don't know this man."
"I understand." Daimian looked across the street to his right before getting an idea. "Hey, do you know where Nino Man resides or anything about him?"
"Oh, the guy with you on the news," Robert asked before shaking his head. "No, can't say I've seen him around too much. Probably, uh, in a secret lair like a lotta superheroes seem to have. But you don't know where he's at," Robert asked as he tilted his head and pointed at Daimian.
"No, it's more of a team up deal I guess. I always seem to find the trouble and he seems to find me with it. Weird system really, but it gets the job done I suppose."
   "Yeah."
"Alrighty then," Daimian said, putting the picture of Killy away in his sleeve once again before waving Robert off, "have fun in there, man. Just let me know if you see anything." Robert nodded and waved back before shakily re-entering the building. Daimian turned to walk through the street a little confused. As he started walking, he felt like there was someone else with them. Without a second thought, he left Robert behind without noticing the pair of white daggers staring him down from the shadows.
