Obscurity-Book 1

Chapter 15-Fireworks (1/2)

Chapter 15-Fireworks (1/2)

Oct 19, 2022

"You just love your sudden entrances, don't you kid," Nino Man asked as he completely turned his body to fully face Obscurity.
"Oh, me," Obscurity pressed his hands on his chest in a playfully defensive tone. "I was just coming up here to see the fireworks that were set to go off soon. I hear they're beautiful this time of year."
Nino Man looked at him with a scowl. "Oh," he said, balling his hands into fists, "then enjoy the greatest show of your life."
"I know your game, Nino," Obscurity slightly stepped forward. "I know you've got bombs hidden all throughout the city just waiting to detonate them."
"And how in the world could you have guessed that," Nino Man replied sarcastically. "Trickling up my spine and reading my mind?"
"Lucky guess, actually. Or maybe I read it in the paper somewhere, who knows?"
Nino Man glared at Obscurity just a few feet away from him. "Well, you probably don't know the half of it, kid. Unlike what your papers say, the bombs aren't there!" He launched one of his fists up, thrusting it into Obscurity's chest and knocking him off of his feet. As he watched him fall on the concrete roof, Nino Man violently pointed down at the man slightly gasping for air. "You think I'd keep 'em in the same place so you could just snatch 'em up before they went off? I'm not a dumbass, you little shit!" He turned away as Obscurity started to stand back up, cradling his chest. "Now, if you really want to be a hero to this city like I’ve been, you'll have to fight for it!"
"Sneaky bastard," Obscurity said as he watched Nino Man jump from the building to the one behind him. Catching his breath from the upper-cut, he followed the white demon, the only light guiding his stride being the downtown lamp posts and the patriotic glow of the fireworks in the distance. Crossing building to building, he chased Nino Man until it seemed they had reached a dead-end.
"Dammit," Nino Man skidded to a halt as he reached the intersection of the street, his pursuer approaching fast. He looked down from the noisy bar that was below him then back at Obscurity before he grinned under his masked face.
"End of the line, Nino Man." Obscurity stopped behind his target, staring at the back of his horned head. "It's either the edge of the building or the concrete ground below. I'm sure those people down there would be happy to know you're planning to destroy the city property you've so dearly protected."
Nino Man faced towards Obscurity with witty eyes. "The only person who should be worried is you. I've got tons of options to get out of this. You on the other hand," he tossed a small, spherical bomb at Obscurity's black boots before shrugging, "you've got a minute to decide. Oh," he paused as Obscurity picked up the bomb with massive concern, "and don't even try defusing it either. That shell is very difficult to crack. Have fun, Obscurity." Nino Man stepped to the edge of the busy building and jumped, using a small propulsion device in his boots to launch him onto the building across the street, which happened to be the still under-construction café.
Obscurity paused a moment, looking at the small bomb in a panic. Darting his eyes around the scene, he hesitated to throw it, thinking it could land anywhere in a crowd of people or under a car. Keeping it on the building would be just as bad of an idea and would likely kill him in the process. Then he moved his gaze over to Nino Man across the street, who was staring him down with his arms crossed. He thought about how his enemy crossed the street with a small burst from his boots and how it was able to send him so far. Just then, an idea came to Obscurity's head.
   beep
He held the bomb in his hand before looking at the thirty seconds remaining. Motioning his hand to the beat of the bomb, he closed his eyes until there were ten seconds left. He opened them, stepping to the corner of the building behind him as he looked at the gap over the road. Taking a deep breath in, he ran from one side of the building to the other.
   beep
Without thinking, he jumped out of the guard of the roof over the busy road below.
   beep
His body started to drop out of the air halfway through the gap.
   beep
On the roof of the café, Nino Man's lensed eyes widened with gleeful anticipation as his enemy started to fall out of the sky with no hope of survival.
   beep
Turning his body to face the bar he just jumped from, Obscurity gripped the bomb away from his body.
   beep
The deafening explosion over the street knocked out the hearing of Obscurity as his body went limp in the ball of fire. Streetlights and windows nearby shattered as he flew back into the air from the force of it, going almost a full floor over the largely three-story buildings before falling back down. As he watched, Nino Man's expression fell to horror as Obscurity landed right in front of him, slight burns covering his suit. He raised his head from the cold concrete roof, coughing up blood in the white mouthpiece of his mask.
"Y- you," Nino Man stuttered in shock at what looked like a battered sack of trash in his eyes, "you should be dead. That blast should have killed you!" He looked in ongoing horror as the young man started to stand to his feet in front of him, wiping his face with his pale, gloved hand.
Obscurity glared at Nino Man's cold eyes as he stabilized himself. "It'll take more than that to keep me down, asshole."
"YOU PIECE OF SHIT," Nino Man screamed as he threw his fists at Obscurity, knocking him in the face and causing him to return to the hard concrete. "WHY WON'T YOU DIE?!"
"Because I've got a job to do," Obscurity told Nino Man as he limply stood back up. Nino Man ran up to Obscurity in a blind fury before he's pushed into a little wall behind them. He falls onto the concrete, quickly getting back up and dusting himself off. Without warning, he grabbed around Obscurity's torso, violently tugging up. "Gh- What the hell are you d-" he grunted before Nino Man took him off of his feet and slammed him onto the roof of the building next to them, causing him to let out a painful "GHOOPH!"
Shortly after Obscurity landed on the roof, Nino Man joined him "Is your whole goal to be beaten up over and over again," he asked as he pushed the grounded Obscurity with his hand, ominously looming over him. "Because that's not a really great plan, kid." He took his hand off of his enemies chest, looking back at the street below for a moment and noticing the growing number of confused police officers and civilians, cracking an unnoticeable smile as he did.
"It doesn't matter what you throw at me," Obscurity said as he regained his balance once again. "I'll just get right back up, ready to kick your ass."
"Oh really," Nino Man asked, shifting his head to look back at the battered young man before him. Turning around, he pulled out a small cylindrical object with a bright button placed at the top, hiding it from the view of the gathering crowd. "This is the detonator for all the bombs placed around the city right now. When this little button is pressed, not only will this sad little town be blown bit by bit, but so will your reputation. The city's been onto you for a week now and they'll find any excuse to finally take your ass into custody. All that fame brought in for your capture will be back where it rightfully belongs." Nino Man now stepped closer as he glared at Obscurity face to face, standing only a few inches taller than his black suited foe, before holding the detonator to his face, ready to take the cap off of the button. "To ME!"
Before he could even do anything with the it, Obscurity knocked the detonator from Nino Man's hand, causing it to roll away from the both of them. Shifting his gaze, Nino Man kicked Obscurity's left leg, causing the young man to collapse and let him snatch the detonator. Fiddling with it for a short moment, he gets kicked in the back by the furious, pale figure, screaming "Give that BACK!" As he tried to grab the fumbled detonator, Obscurity swiftly tackled him from behind, causing him to lose his grip.
   "NOOOOPH!!!"
The detonator finally landed on a little ledge coming off of the building. The two stood up, looking at the detonator intently. Obscurity bolted in front to protect it as Nino Man vacantly stared at the two of them. "Great, what's this now," he asked, watching Obscurity weakly go back into a fighting stance. "Are you really trying t-" he starts before a weak jab to his chest cut him off. He looked in a disbelieving confusion at Obscurity, asking "Was that it?" He opened his arms wide in a frustration, yelling at him. "You hit like a GIRL!"
   DOOF!
"Thanks," Obscurity said as he returned back to his stance after landing a right hook directly into Nino Man's stunned face, "my sister taught me!" He watched as Nino Man slowly stumbled back a bit, trying to catch his footing. When he did, he strained his stiff neck enough for it to crack, walking over to the other side of the building. Squatting down, he rippped a small turbine off of the roof, throwing it at Obscurity, who barely ducked in time to dodge it. Noticing Nino Man coming up to him fast, he kicked the detonator away to another rooftop behind them.
As he stepped back, Obscurity felt himself being grabbed as Nino Man lunged towards him, digging his clawed gloves into his shoulders violently. "You know," Nino Man looked back into the crowd of people below them, "instead of celebrating freedom for this country, I'd prefer to think that THIS Fourth of July I'm freeing myself of YOU!" He pulled his head back before launching it at Obscurity's, who swiftly dodged to the right to avoid the blow. Nino Man fell forward slightly, still clinging to the young man's shoulders tightly enough to make him yell.
Grabbing onto Nino Man's elbows, Obscurity took the knifed nails out of his now bleeding shoulders and turned his enemy around to kicking him square in the ass with his knee. As his foot lands back on the concrete, Nino Man takes Obscurity's arm and starts to raise his knee. Before it could even hit anything, Obscurity bent his elbow and caused Nino Man's knee to collide at a swift speed, hitting it like a massive bullet. The white demon groaned slightly as Obscurity got behind him, looking behind at the detonator sitting still in the flashing lights of the fireworks.
Nino Man grabbed at the edge of the building to stand up as Obscurity started to go back into a defensive stance. "You really want to go through with this, huh," Nino Man asked with gritted teeth. He burst out, rushing towards Obscurity as he moved to the side to dodge. Without realizing it, he tripped as Nino Man swipes his leg across the space below him. Landing on the cold roof, he feelt his body being picked up by the fabric on his chest, stretching as he hovered under the gleaming, golden eyes of his sharp enemy who started to make a fist with his free hand.
With an incredible force, Nino Man thrust his fist once again into Obscurity's chest, causing him to cough up more blood to stain the white parts of his mask from the. He fell back to the ground, sinking his head and coughing as he helplessly watched Nino Man's pale boots as they stepped closer to the small detonator.
"Why do you want to blow up the city anyway? I though you were supposed to be saving it, not turning it to dust," Obscurity asked his enemy in gasping breaths.
"Here's a little lesson for you, kid." Nino Man looked down at Obscurity. "You can't save a city that isn't broken. Sometimes you need to make an excuse to save it. Even if it’s your own doing that gets it to that point."
"Then why not save another city? I hear Kings-"
"Those people might as well expect trouble," Nino Man flashed his clawed gloves in Obscurity's grimly masked face. "This place... This place is marketable! It's fresh for the taking, kid. You don't understand the world like I do, but these people are suffering. I'm helping them get better, safer homes by showing them the faults in their dusty brick prisons and their ma and pa shops."
"You’re just making more problems than there were before."
"Oh," Nino Man retreated his claws in favor of a smug look with his pointed eyes. "And what would you know about the homeless crisis in this city, hm? Or any of the suffering these people have to go through every day? You’re on top of the world just like I am with your sleek suit and your fighting skills."
Obscurity started to stand up, cradling his weak body as his other hand harshly pointed at Nino Man. "Well, I sure know a hell of a lot more about all of it than you ever could. Unlike you, I never had a fancy place to sit, we had to survive on our own or with the help of gracious people. And as bad as I've had it, I know that people have it worse off here, living on park benches with backpacks for their homes."
"And think of what this will do," Nino Man exclaimed, holding his hands in front of him defensively. "For you, it might mean the end of the people above the poorer classes. I mean, think of the all of the people downtown, they've needed to be robbed. They're the ones we need to fight, and I have the means to do that right now! We can end this towns suffering by taking down the shops hoarding their money, right? I mean, even what Mann did at that café, the one we're near right n-"
   "What," Obscurity asked, eyes flaring.
"Yeah," Nino Man cocked his head, "it was what, March I think? I came up to a raggedy guy that was looking for work and asked if he wanted a job. I mean, I had to involve his family to make him finally agree, but in the end-"
Before he could finish the sentence, Obscurity ran up to Nino Man full force, yelling in his masked face. "You BASTARD!!!"
"Ah ah ah." Nino Man put the detonator with it's cap off in front of Obscurity's face, holding his thumb over the button. "Oh, I can't wait to see your face after this goes off, kid," he said as he pressed his thumb right on the button.
   "Enjoy the fireworks."
