Daimian wiped his bloodied mouth as he strolled down the busy downtown streets. Putting the rag he was using into a little bag on his back, he sat at a bus stop close to the public library, waiting for almost half an hour in the crowded, humid air. When he finally boarded a short, white bus, he sat down on the sticky navy blue seats and leaned back, looking out of the window at the fireworks in the distance. The passing lights soon stopped and he staggered down the few stairs, holding the railing as he stepped onto the concrete near his high school. Looking in the dark field, he looked through the crowd to find his mother and sister watching the twinkling sky above. Daimian hobbled over the other people with picnic blankets in the grass to get closer to his family as the sky flashed brilliantly in red, white and blue streaks. "Oh Daimian, what a surprise," a voice called from behind him. Turning around, he saw Dan creeping behind him in a wheelchair that he was rolling by himself. "Glad you could make it to the show tonight." "Dan-" Daimian happily sighed as he walked over to hug the old man. "Woah, hey, don't forget this body's still fragile." Daimian swiftly held himself back. "Sorry Dan, it’s uh,” he paused for a moment, looking at his feet then back at Dan. “Just nice to see a friendly face in the crowd." "Ah, 't's alright." Dan arched his back and neck, trying to look over the crowd. "Have you seen Alex or Faith anywhere around here? I haven't had much luck seein' 'em here." "Oh." Daimian pointed in the direction he was walking before. "I think I saw their blanket over that way." Dan nodded. "Good to hear. Now, could you help an old man's arms out and roll me over there with you?" "Dan," Daimian turned back at his family then back at the old man, "it's the least I could do to help you." A few moments later, Daimian brought Dan to Alex and Faith laying on a beige, checkered picnic blanket in an emptier spot of the crowd. Alex looked behind her and noticed the two coming, poking her mother to look with her. "Oh, Dan, Daimian, what a lovely surprise," Faith said, standing up to greet the two. Kissing Daimian on the cheek and giving Dan a hug, she told them "I'm so glad you two're just in time to see the end of the firework show tonight." "You're tellin' me there was more stuff going on before we showed up," Dan jokingly called out. Daimian's smile flattened slightly as he looked up at the blooming sky above. "Huh," Alex softly scoffed, elbowing her brother's shoulder, "I thought you said you were hanging out with your friends tonight, Daimian. Hell happened with that?" Daimian paused for a minute before giving a weak smirk and looking into his sister's eyes. "Eh, turns out hanging out with my friends today was a bit of a bust. Besides," he looked over his shoulder at Dan and Faith laughing with each other before looking back at his sister, "I'd rather spend this time with the people I actually care about." Alex looked at Daimian with a bit of confusion before nodding and urging him to gather around the rest of the family on the picnic blanket. The four sat in the field, surrounded by a crowd of people all with the same goal; to look at the sky to see the twinkling lights floating above them. The night sky shown brightly with dazzling color, but even when the lights grew dim, there was still something there. The city had a loyal protector that would go almost unnoticed that Fourth of July, people having little knowledge of the work done to protect their lives. An obscure figure that tied into the mystery of the so-called-hero Nino Man, now with a confusing relationship in the public eye. For now, the threat of the villain is gone, but it's unknown what dangers lie in wait for Obscurity until next time.
And that's Obscurity book one. I have plans to do more, including short stories every once in a while. But this will serve as an introduction to the cast and the story. Hope you enjoyed.
A menace has been terrorizing a quiet town for unknown reasons, leading someone caught in the chaos to make a stand in the guise of Obscurity. This new masked vigilante must face foes to protect their town and the people they love in an ever-darkening environment.
