Well, this is unexpected.
It’s not every day you die tragically. It’s also not every day you get to witness expert surgeons placing your organs into five strangers.
Why am I even still here?!
Am I just stuck here?!
I don’t want to be stuck here!
I want to see the world!
Hell, I was supposed to start med school in September! I’m supposed to join Doctors Without Borders! I’m supposed to help people!
I guess at least I’m helping people in death. But only five lives, when there are so many millions in this world needing my help?!
That’s not fair!
Well, whatever, I guess. Can’t be helped now, after all, I’m dead. Can’t do anything without a body.
Who am I being transplanted into anyway? Might as well find out…
Patient Number One: Lucia Espinosa, Hispanic female, 22, born with a congenital heart condition. Apparently, she was waiting for a heart for a year and a half. Seems like she got mine just in time. Her family seems to care about her. The parents look like they haven’t left the hospital in months. Can’t blame them, really.
Huh, someone else is coming in. Who’s that? Can’t be a doctor. Maybe a friend? The parents seem to know her well.
Geez, why can I barely hear anything?! It’s like I’m underwater or something! I think they called her Sophie?
Whatever. Seems like Lucia won’t be waking any time soon. I think I’m gonna check out the other recipients. Not like I’ve got anything else to do.
Patient Number Two: Mike Greene, Caucasian male, 53, suffered from cirrhosis. Great. An alcoholic. Wait, did they seriously give my liver to an alcoholic?! He’s gonna ruin it!
Well, at least he seems to be waking up. No one’s waiting for him. He doesn’t seem surprised. An alcoholic loner. Brilliant.
Oh, a doctor is coming in. Huh, I can actually hear clearly this time. Maybe because the alcoholic is awake?
“The surgery was a success, Mr. Greene. Please try not to ruin this liver as well, it was hard convincing the board to let you have it.”
“Hey, I’ve only fallen off the wagon four times, Doc. No idea why you fought so hard for me, though. You should’ve given the liver to someone more deserving than me.”
Seems like we agree on something, old man.
“Come now, Mr. Greene, we all deserve second chances. I’ll go fill out your prescription now. And remember, no alcohol. Let’s get you that 3 years sobriety chip, eh?” The doctor left the room.
“More like re-earning my one year, Doc…” Mr. Greene whispered.
Great. He’s going to ruin my liver.
Patient Number Three: Richard Wilkes, Caucasian male, 34. Huh, kidneys damaged in a freak accident. How the hell do you get impaled while cycling? Whatever. Seems this dude has no one waiting for him to wake up either.
He seems to be coming round. A nurse is here to check his fluids.
Wait, why is this dude eyeing her like that…? Man, don’t tell me they gave my kidneys to a creep! Get outta here, nurse, now! Ok, she left. Man, I’m glad this guy is currently bed-ridden!
Patient Number Four: Joanna Yang, Chinese-American female, 27. Huh, leukaemia. That has to suck. Still, with my bone marrow, hopefully she’ll be a cancer survivor.
Wow, that’s a lotta cops waiting for her. Guess I know what she does for a living. Finally, an interesting patient! Can’t wait to tag along on her cases when she recovers! I hope we get some good ones!
Patient Number Five: Lena Bleu, African-American female, 13. Oh, cystic fibrosis, that’s rough. Man, her parents look exhausted. When was the last time they slept? A doctor is waiting in with them. Ugh, it sounds like everything is underwater again! Wake up already, kid! I wanna hear what’s going on!
Finally! The kid’s coming round.
Man, she’s drowsy. Then again, she did just have a lung transplant surgery, so I guess that’s to be expected.
“How are you feeling, honey?” the mother is right there with her.
“Mum? I feel… I can… breathe…!” This kid is definitely still under the influence of anaesthesia.
“That’s incredible, Lena! Doctor, thank you so much!” the father is shaking the doctor’s hand. Wow, I’d be surprised if that doctor’s hand doesn’t fall off! The doctor looks happy though.
“Of course, Mr. and Mrs. Bleu. We’re all pleased with how well the surgery went. Lena has become quite the favourite among the staff here.” The doctor seems fond of Lena too, from the way she said that.
“Who wouldn’t be fond of our angel?” the father seems to dote on his daughter.
An alarm on the mother’s phone goes off. “Ah, I’ve got to go. My shift starts soon.”
“Do you need a lift?”
“No, you stay with Lena while you can.”
“Do you have to go, mom?” the kid seems disappointed, but not surprised.
“I’m sorry, sweetie, but I do.” The mother seems reluctant to go as well.
“Because you need money for my new lungs. I’m sorry I got sick.” Man, I can see why the hospital staff are so fond of this kid.
“You have nothing to apologise for, sweetie. I love you, and I’ll be back when I can.” The mother kisses her daughter goodbye.
“Get some rest, sweetheart. I’ll be staying while I can.” The father reassures his daughter.
Things are starting to sound like they’re underwater again, as Lena falls asleep once more.
Man. Seems like my un-life going forward is going to be very interesting.
