Pavel gazed at aunt Zhenya. He didn't spoke aloud about his thoughts. Pavel was both ashamed and still angry that's why he didn't want to discuss it with anybody. So Pavel just told about his mother and their meeting in general.
Can she read his mind?
Or it's just too obvious?
“You can do it with magic,” continued aunt Zhenya. “If you really want your revenge there are a plenty of pretty easy ways. I can teach you what to do.”
“No!” Pavel waved his hands. “That's not it.”
“Oh, really?” aunt Zhenya narrowed her eyes and smiled.
“The veil,” said Pavel. “Now I know about it. And I think that was the veil affected her.”
“Perhaps it had been affected her memory,” answered aunt Zhenya. “And perhaps not. We just don't have enough information. Besides, even if the veil had really effected her it had influence on her memory only. Not her emotions. Not her mind. Not her attitude. And even if she isn't lying about the things she doesn't remember there's no guaranty that she's not related to the danger you got into. This situation could be much more complicated. So do not jump into conclusions.”
“Okay, I see,” nodded Pavel.
“Well, there's possibility that she's a victim of course. Remember, there's also a possibility that your father is a raper. In case that your mother's observation is correct.”
“How can you...? No, she's probably just forgot something because of the veil!”
“How can I!?” aunt Zhenya laughed. “Oh, poor boy, you should understand that if someone is your relative it doesn't make him a good person. You are trying to protect your parents but it shouldn't prevent you from seen the truth. Illusions are dangerous.” She paused for a moment and then continued. “About your mother. If you are still angry at her you can punish her for her attitude. You can make her crazy. Give her some hallucinations or paranoia. That's just a little thing. I'm pretty talented it that kind of magic and can train you. This is easy. Those illnesses are much more difficult to heal than to get. But you should decide if you really want it. Or this doing will make you regret to the end of your life. Magic can make whatever you want and it is dangerous. It can harm you at first. Or you can regret till the end of your life that you hadn't done it. Each case is unique. Which one is yours?”
“I want to find out who did it to me,” said Pavel. “That trap with creatures.”
“So you want judgment.”
“Yes.”
“There's no judgment,” said aunt Zhenya. “I mean real judgment. If you are starting to perform it yourself that's a revenge. Do not confuse them. Besides, do you want judgment to exist? What if one day it comes for you? You are not saint. Neither am I. Neither any person in the world. Perhaps it would be better without judgment?” Aunt Zhenya didn't allow Pavel to answer. She changed subject fast. “How did you find your mother by the way?”
“It was a private detective. Not me. He just contacted me and offered his services. The cost was pretty low so I agreed.”
“Interesting,” commented aunt Zhenya. “I didn't manage to find her. I didn't work hard yet though. But some private detective from nowhere did this.”
“Now it seems really suspicious to me also,” agreed Pavel.
“There's a couple more suspicious things,” said aunt Zhenya. “You were never adopted, right? Spend whole life in the orphanage?”
“Yes. So what?”
“There's actually the whole line of couples waiting for a infant to adopt. Not so much people want to adopt older kids and teenagers. But a lot of them want a little baby. Especially if a child is healthy. You were a healthy infant when you got into system. And somehow no one adopted you. That's weird.”
“I've never thought about it that way,” confessed Pavel.
“And the last thing,” continued aunt Zhenya. “You were not admitted to university?”
“I wasn't.”
“But there was a state scholarship for orphans. You perfectly fitted.”
“You think it's connected somehow?” asked Pavel.
“Oh, yeah. I definitely do. I can see a pattern here.”
“What pattern?”
“Someone wanted you not to be found by you family. We should have sensed you a long time ago. But we never did. It means that someone hid you from our magic. That is actually tricky to perform. But your enemy didn't stopped. I think all those things were arranged. You were not admitted to university because of that. And you met your mother with her attitude.”
“But why someone would do that?” asked Pavel.
“To make you miserable and then kill. Someone wanted you to suffer until you life ends in the claws of the mist-bannegors.”
“I still can't get it. That's just too much effort to punish me... just for nothing. I don't think I could do anything to someone being a child. Ans if it is a revenge against my father as I can suggest it still doesn't make sense.”
“What if it's something deeply personal?” said aunt Zhenya. “It's pure emotion without any logic. And you are right. It must be against Mikhail. And there's one more thing you should know. Your father had been killed by the creatures from another world. Which happens to magicians but now it looks like remarkable coincidence. There was different creatures but still.”
“Do you have any assumptions considering who could it be?”
“You father had a lot of enemies,” answered aunt Zhenya. “But there's no one I know to be alive.”
