We looked over at Marcia. She was shaking, “What happened to me? Why would you use that spell? You could have died, dumbass.”
“I’m sorry, Marcia-“
“No, you are not! I know you would do it again in a heartbeat.”
“Yeah…”
Marcia shifted her attention to the old man. “Oh, I’m sorry. We are being rude. I’m Marcia, and that idiot is my little brother, Gruff.”
The old man smiled, “I’m Hermon. I am the mayor of this town.”
“Thank you for helping us in our time of need.”
“It wasn’t the town. Our doctor doesn’t like letting people die, no matter what they are.”
“Well, he sounds wonderful.” Marcia looked around the room carefully. Her brows slanted downward. She held tightly to her arm, and her eyes met me.
“He’s in surgery.”
Marcia sprung up and looked at Hermon. “Can you take me to him?”
“Marcia!”
“I know, Gruff. Let me do this. For him, at least.”
I slowly followed as Marcia marched through the hospital building. We turned into the surgery room to find Jonah hooked to some machines. The person, I assume, was the doctor, who hovered over Jonah with small knives. The medical machines were beeping and making suction noises.
“I’ll take over.” Marcia pushed past the nurses, and the doctor looked up at her. He backed away from Jonah.
“I did all I could, but I doubt he will recover. No matter what I do… nothing is changing no matter what I do.”
“Marcia, at least let me take care of some of the curses. Your magic-“
“Thank you, Gruffy. Go ahead and get rid of the small curses. I’ll do the rest.” I placed myself beside Marcia. We put our hands on Jonah. Magic transferred from my body through Jonah’s lifeline. I pulled a curse out of him, much like I did with Marcia. The curses seemed to intertwine with each other. I glanced at Marcia, and sweat dripped from her brow. Her hands trembled as her magic ran low.
I focused on pulling as many curses from Jonah as I could. Just as I managed to pull out my fourth curse, Marcia stopped me. “That’s enough, Gruff. Any more than this, and you will lose all your magic.”
“I’m okay, Marcia. I have plenty of magic to spare.”
“I can see the wasted magic spilling out of you. You must calm down and pull that magic back inside before you stunt your magic.”
“Okay,” I backed away from Jonah. Light filled the room. Marcia slowly breathed out as Jonah’s wounds started healing one by one. Magic drained rapidly out of Marcia. I clenched my hands together tightly. If only I’d listened to Master better when she taught us healing spells. I could have healed Marcia without draining her magic.
The last cut on Jonah’s body healed, and Marcia flipped him on his side. “Marcia, you don’t have the magic to spare.”
“He won’t be able to walk with his spine like this.”
“Marcia, just stop here.”
Ignoring my plea, Marcia lit the room once more with her magic. She transferred what she had left into Jonah’s spine. The room went dark for a moment, and Marcia fell to her knees. “Did you fix him?”
“No, I couldn’t fix his spine. He’s not going to be able to walk.” The woman choked out the words.
“You did your best.”
“It’s not good enough.” Marcia pulled herself off the floor and fled the room.
“It will be okay.” The doctor said. “He’s alive. As long as he is alive, there will be a way to fix him.” I followed Marcia out of the room.
