One thing was for sure, Thorn loved him and they had to come to a decision. Kit would be taking his nephew as his own, there was no doubt about that, but he also didn’t want to lose Thorn. He really thought he would have at that time, cause Thorn was hesitant around little Kal and didn’t seem comfortable with a baby in their relationship. It took another three weeks for the adoption to become final, in that time, Kit and Thorn spent it getting used to two year old Kal. Kal was such a cute baby, olive tanned skin and wide honey eyes, he was curious about a lot of things but also quite simple to deal with. He also didn’t seem to mind that he was now with Kit and Thorn now.
In these three weeks, Kal also seemed to literally attach himself to Thorn. He liked it whenever Thorn picked him up or whenever Thorn played and spoke to him about the most random things. The baby was quiet however and easy to please, he rarely cried and didn't seem to notice that his parents were no longer with him. Thorn and Kal had a strange relationship in the beginning, but Kit noticed that Thorn was actually just cautious around Kal. The older man was unsure, as if he would harm Kal by just holding him. That quickly mended over time though. Kal was a huge Papa’s boy, stealing Thorn’s heart immediately.
Then the papers were mailed and the Adoption was finalized in both America and Thailand, thanks to Pat pulling some strings to make that other process easier. The five of them spent the day in quiet celebration at their temporary condo in DC that they had moved into while Kal was staying with them. Pat and King hit it off and became quick partners, Thorn joked that they were now Kit’s Pa and Dad, like Kal had. It always made the older men tisked and tease Kit some more over it. But Kit was just glad that Pat had made a true friend in the US, at least he didn’t have to worry as much when they were going back to Thailand in less than a month.
Kit found himself nervous as they prepared to leave the States. He tried to spend the days distracting himself with Thorn and Kal, happy to have the little boy in their life. That didn’t seem to help much, as he kept wondering if going back to Thailand was the best option for their larger family. America had what they needed to be safe and a same sex couple with a child, but they also lacked the safe environment for an asian child in the school system, not to mention Kit and Thorn didn’t feel comfortable in the States. Thailand was where they felt like they could grow and improve, especially for Kal. He decided to have this discussion with Thorn when his lover had put the baby down to rest for the night.
Thorn shared that he too had been wondering about Kal’s future. It made Kit smile as he threw his leg over Thorn’s thighs and sat down. Thorn gripped his hip and they talked together about what could be the best choice for Kal.
Thorn even suggested living in Canada or another Asian country if Thailand and America didn’t offer anything that felt comfortable to him. A whole new country, but that would mean starting over and Kit also didn’t like that. He was probably biased but he wanted to stay in Thailand and have Kal grow up in the beautiful rurals of Thailand and have the same connection with nature and peace that he had. Thorn just wanted Kit and Kal to be safe and happy, so they stayed up until past midnight together, scrolling through to find a place to stay for the three of them when they got back to Thailand. Over the weekend, after finally deciding to stay in Thailand, at least until Kal is fifteen, they plan to relax.
Thorn takes them out to sightsee in the Capital of America and Pat meets them for dinner at a beautiful restaurant. Their Sunday is spent playing with blocks with Kal and then napping after lunch, Kal falling asleep on Thorn then Kit falling asleep beside them. Their next week is quiet and fun, Kit tried to read a bit of his sister’s journal but didn’t get past a page before he needed to dry his eyes. Thorn cuddles him after and presses loving sniff kisses. He tells Thorn how much he loves him that night as they hold a sleeping Kal between them, how much he wants this, this little family with him. During the week, Kit spent time with Pat and King as Thorn took Kal on walks around the city or even to visit his Parents.
When Pat and King are over at their temporary three bedroom condo, Thorn returns with a resting Kal that evening and puts him down to nap after passing through the Kitchen and greeting them. Kit gets up to check on Kal and Thorn, only to notice groceries on the counter, he heads over to them as King jokes around with Pat. Kit unpacks the fresh veggies and snacks, then notices a little gift bag. He calls for Thorn and when he receives no answer, assumes Thorn is on a call or in the bathroom cleaning up, so shrugs it off to unpack the paper gift bag. Inside the bag however, is a little gray box, curious and not thinking much of it, he shakes the box. He hears a bit of shuffling and then opens the cardboard box, only to meet a much smaller, velvet black box.
Kit smiles, Thorn had gone out and gotten him a gift again. He liked to do that randomly, whether it was chokers that Kit liked or the newest book that had his attention, Thorn would get it for him. No doubt it was something cute or beautiful, he guessed because of the size of the little velvet cube. Kit opened the little thing and his smile slowly dropped as his eyes caught on the silver ring that had a row of beautiful shining diamonds. Kit felt a gasp rush through him as his hand suddenly covered his mouth and his brain slowly processed what he was seeing. Kit fumbled with the box as he leaned back against the counter to try to catch himself as he stared.
"Kittichat Khad," Kit had practically jumped at the sound of Thorn's firm, but gentle voice calling his full name. His lover of nearly three years stepped out of the hallway and into the Kitchen with a loving look in his eyes. The man he loved was standing in front of him, with the sneakiest grin on his usual fierce face, he walks up to Kit and cups his face as Kit’s hand begins to shake, "These past few months have been a hell of a ride, hell, these past few years beside you have been extraordinary. From the moment you ran into me, I just had to know you, clumsy and blushing, beautiful Kit."
Kit's eyes fill with tears as Thorn continues, "I had no hope for love, much less love as strong and warm as yours, much less the love that you give me in the form of a family. I want this for the rest of my life, Kit.” His voice breaks there and he clears his throat for a moment, then looks over and Kit suddenly realizes that Pat and King are in the room with them, huge smiles on their face. Thorn catches himself, “ I want to wake up beside you, I want to watch you get into that focused mode when you're writing. I love watching you cook and I want to continue being your first taste tester.”
He steps back for a moment and takes Kit’s trembling hand as he takes the ring out of its box, “ I want to be your Husband and watch Kal grow beside you. Even if it's just legal in the US, even if it's just between us, I wanna wear these rings and know that we belong together." Kit sniffles, he's practically ugly crying as he feels snot run down his nose, "What do you say Kitten, would you make me an honest man and marry me-"
Kit doesn’t let Thorn continue or even get to one knee before he’s shaking his head like crazy and jumping into his Fiance’s arms,"Fuck yes, Thorn!" He’d known the answer to this possible question since six months into their relationship. He’d known Thorn had his entire heart whenever he woke up to Thorn sniff kissing him and whispering how much he loved him. He knew he wanted a future with Thorn when he caught Thorn humming a Thai childhood nursery rhyme to put little Kal to sleep. Kit tries to wipe his face clean as he hears cheering and clapping from Pat and King in the background. He looked at his future Husband, who had the most loving smile on his face as his eyes were watering.
Pat and King hug them both and wish them their congratulations. They open up a bottle of win that night and enjoy the company of their friends until the moon is bright that night. When Kit and Thorn are falling into bed that night, he’s surprised when Thorn asks him to marry him soon. As in, as before they leave for Thailand in two weeks. Kit thinks it’s the wine in their systems, but he agrees and they kiss the rest of the night away. When their hangovers have worn out the next morning and they have a late breakfast with a quiet Kal, bubbly as his adoptive parents sneak kisses and touches in the Kitchen. Thorn then whispers how happy he is and it reminds Kit of his question to get married so soon.
“Thorn, were you serious last night?”
Thorn blinks slowly, something he does when he’s surprised or sleepy, as he sips his coffee, “About marrying you, yes Kitten-”
Kit smiles, “Not that, baby. I meant, getting married next week,”
Thorn nods and rests his coffee down, taking Kit’s waist in his hands and nudging their foreheads together, “Of course. I know it’s quick but we only live once and I want to go back to Thailand as a married man.” He finishes with a quick smirk then says, “If it’s too soon, I can wait Kit, as long as we wear these rings though, we belong to each other.”
Kit smiles and kisses his fiance.
They were married in Washington DC a week later, Kit walking down the aisle in a 3 piece white suit that he had the help of choosing with Pat. It stood out for Kit because the long sleeved jacket with the penguin tails and the white tailored vest underneath was made out of a soft silk like material. While Pat and King wore gray suits for the occasion with white ties, with little Kal, Thorn’s suit was a smokey gray with black accents that made his shoulders broader and a cute black bowtie with a white dress shirt under. When they saw each other at the small wedding ceremony, they were momentarily stunned. Thorn looked so handsome. And nervous. But that didn’t stop him from telling Kit how beautiful he looked.
It was a private affair, just King, Pat and Kal as their witnesses, but Kit didn't care. King, the big man tried to hide tears as Pat shook his head and patted his shoulder. Kit and Thorn said their vows in Thai, promising themselves to each other, for better or worse, till death do they part. They exchanged rings, Thorn sliding back on the stunning silver ring of his with the diamonds throughout and Kit putting on Thorn’s. A plain silver band, but with no less meaning and worth. Then they signed their names, Kit and Thorn officially becoming Husbands in the eyes of the American Law. It was just perfect in his eyes and when they kissed, it was as if it was two years ago and they had just moved in together, feeling light and loved, as if they were in a honeymoon stage all over again.
They were Husbands. Kit called Thorn that the entire weekend and they celebrated in a smaller affair, just pleased to be in each other’s presence and enjoying their last week in America. Their love seemed stronger as they packed that last weekend. Before leaving, they visited his sister and her husband once more, then asked Pat to visit her for him. On a Monday morning, they were having teary eyed goodbye hugs in the airport and then taking a flight out of Washington. Their trip took a day, Kit and Kal getting a lot of sleep out of it, as Thorn had to call his Station to discuss a few things.
Kit and Thorn would be moving, not too far from Thorn’s job currently, but because Kit’s place was too small to add a baby in the mix, they had to find a new place. Thankfully, Thorn had done more scoping and had a few places in mind saved. Once they were home though, they’d be taking another much needed nap. Off the plane in Thailand, Kit felt fully like himself again, he held Kal closer and kissed his cheek as Thorn dragged the rest of the bags with them out of the Airport. In Kit’s place they slowly unpack and settle in with Kal’s things. Within the rest of the month, they chose a new place, someone was renting out their house less than half an hour away. The house was a spacious three bedroom that was almost perfect for their growing family, so they signed the deal and were reading to move.
They were able to live in peace for the next few years there. Kal grew quickly and their family began to gain new, happy memories. Kit’s last series really set him up and he and Thorn began discussing moving again. Kal was at a good age and Thorn was comfortable with moving and starting in a new Police Station or even doing something else. So they were looking for a place again, this time, to buy and to stay in for a long time. Finally Thorn found the quiet Pinong Nakorn and its scenery with where it was situated immediately drawn in Kit. Not to mention, there was an older couple selling a house there for the past year and Kit didn’t want to miss out on such an opportunity.
Thus began their migration to the beautiful peaceful Town in rural Thailand.
Now
Win drags himself off that tiny Kitchen floor, washes his face and forgets the makeshift breakfast he was trying to make. He leaves their tiny cabin and makes the quiet, lonely trek out of the forest areas to the nearest road where he quickly gets a drop near the outskirts of the town with a motorcycle rider. He keeps a lookout of his surroundings as he walks, the gun at his ankle feeling more and more heavy. He walks with purpose though, he had to continue keeping an eye on the town, especially considering that he hadn’t been in the right mind these days. But, he’d try his best to stay alert and updated.
Win crossed the semi busy road over to a little cafe and pushed the door open, letting the soft jingle ring in his head. He looks over to the corner at the furthest from the window and his heart pangs as shadows of memories replay. Champ walks up to the little chair and table, resting a coffee to him and a pastry that he had bought for Win to try. Champ’s wide smile as Win finally gives in and tries the soft pastry was enough for him, even though he didn’t partially like that sort of pastry. Win is snapped out of the memory as the girl over the counter grabs his attention. The shadows of the memory blurs away and Win feels lightheaded.
Probably because he didn’t eat anything for breakfast. The girl asks softly if he’d like anything, so he monotonously orders a coffee with two of the pastries he didn’t like. Then sits in that corner with the shadows and looks out to the road.
