A crowd of people was standing in a circle surrounding a tall building that was located in the middle of the Feuer Village.
“The day finally came, huh?”
Julius, who was by my side said.
“Yeah, although I would rather stay home.”
Today was finally the day of the Bestowal Ceremony, and the day Julius and I would receive our runes.
“I really hope to receive a talent.”
“Don’t get your hopes up, the disappointment will only be bigger that way.”
“Then I wish to get a crest.”
“You know what, just stay silent.”
The crowd was really well organized. At the front were the 6-year olds that would receive their first runes, and behind them were the older children that would receive their runes for their second, third, fourth and even fifth time.
As for the families of the ones being bestowed were far away from the 6-year old children.
“Good morning, children.”
The voice of a middle-aged man echoed on the little boys and girls.
“We are going to call you and you will go inside once you hear your name.”
Taking a long breath he looked at the children, eventually his eyes paused in me.
Both of us stared at each other for a couple of seconds. The right corner of his lips curled upwards.
Talk about creepy, this guy must be a pedophile. I should be careful.
“Let’s start the ceremony, remember to hear what the people inside and don’t be scared.”
Well I should prepare myself for a long wait, I don’t know for sure how many people are here but it must be thirty something.
“John Feuervogel”
Wow. That was fast.
I stepped forward and headed inside the building.
The corridors were really narrow.
I am almost sure that if I stretch my arm it will hit the wall.
“After the second door, turn right.”
What the actual-?
A man with one blind eye was standing beside him.
When did he get behind me?
“Are you nervous?”
“H-huh? Yes, a little.”
Even though the man was smiling, cold sweat was streaming down my face, cold shivers down my spine.
Just what the heck is this guy?
Whatever the answer was, I am certain of one thing.
He is bad news.
Nevertheless, I followed his instructions and turned right after the second door.
At the end of the corridor a huge wooden door stood menacingly.
After opening the door, the man invited me to enter the room.
The room was made of stone bricks, pretty much like the whole building.
At the center of the circular room a circular carpet just randomly stood there.
It just doesn’t fit with gloomy atmosphere of the room.
The carpet was just too colorful.
“Sit down in the center of the carpet, legs crossed.”
I did as I was told.
“Take your shirt off.”
Am, am I in the correct ceremony?
“We need to see your back during the bestowal.”
Right. Forgot about that. Guess the man at the entrance just left a strong and scary impression on me.
I took out my shirt and placed it at my side.
"Let 's start.”
A mage with a black staff with a white crystal ball in it stepped closer to me.
I could feel the cold surface of the crystal ball of the artifact.
Soon, I started feeling weird. The sensation was something akin to the presence of a foreigner substance entering my body.
Almost immediately I could feel a warm sensation in my back like a hot pencil was carving something on my skin.
But it wasn’t painful.
With this I understood. I have a rune now.
Now my whole perception of the world has changed.
The gloomy room where the only light came from the torches was now full of different colors, red, green, purple, orange and blue.
I noticed a weird detail. The red dots that were present seemed to be heading in my direction.
“Steven! We have a fire rune, it will not stop at crest as well, bring me the fire staff!”
Oh? So that 's why.
A fire rune, just what kind of spell will be, hopefully, not a combat oriented one.
“Hurry up! It’s already at Gift level.”
A Gift? Pretty good rune considering the village standards.
“Here!”
“Finally!”
A different heat engulfed my back, this one was rather painful.
The red dots in the air started trembling for a moment, until they started rushing in my direction.
It almost seems as if they are self-conscious.
“What the hell?!”
“What is it, master?”
Hm? Is something wrong with the bestowal?
“HAHAHAHA!!! We hit the jackpot, dear student! This kid has a Talent.”
Wow. Thank you very much, a Talent will be enough to keep my father’s reputation and live comfortably.
“M-master? What is that?”
“What do you mean?”
“Something is wrong with the rune.”
“Don’t be a fool. The bestowal is over, any error should’ve happened during the ceremony not after.”
“Then what’s that?”
It seems the master was now aware of something.
“Oh My God, Holy shit!!! It's A Blessing. A Pseudo-Blessing, but that's alright. Hm?”
Pseudo-Blessing? Wow, I even want to curse out loud right now.
But, what’s with that noise he made in the end?
“It’s growing, it isn’t stopping, what am I witnessing?”
What does he-.
My thoughts were cut short as a feeling of power, unparalleled power surged within me from the bottom of my
soul to the edges of every single hair.
I couldn’t help but stand and stare at the flames on the torches.
They were intensifying and waving at an insane speed.
Almost like welcoming him, the flames flew out of the torches and levitated around him.
I reflected silently.
Right now a huge amount of information was flooding my mind.
With a gentle movement I pointed the palm of my hand to one of the walls.
“Burn.”
I said monotely.
Soon flames surged from my hand and rushed at insane speeds in the direction of the wall in front of him.
However before the spell reached the wall, another gentle movement of my hand was made.
The flames dispersed into several projectiles who flew in different directions never hitting any walls.
With a look, the flames that came from the torches concentrated themselves in my right arm, coating it.
Without wasting any time I threw a punch at the hair and a similar projectile as the other was shot.
I turned my head to the mage who gave me my rune.
He was holding a similar staff as the previous one. This one didn’t have a crystal ball but crystallized flames that
had a red glow.
I looked at one of his metal necklaces.
I stared at my own figure in their reflex.
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”
Didn’t I tell my father to not overestimate me?
What a twist of fate, really.
I looked again at my reflection.
What stared back were not the usual red eyes of his but golden ones. And let’s not talk about my damn hair.
“It looks awful in red.”
It was not some kind of blond hair or orange, it was straight up red, with a soft magical glow mixed with it.
I looked around the room, my gaze following the fire projectiles flying everywhere.
I stretched my arm upwards and called the flames back to me.
It’s weird, this amount of magical power, does a Pseudo-Blessing have so much power? Or is it only me, I never sensed mana before the moment I received my rune.
This control over fire should not be possible with only a Pseudo-Blessing.
And besides those facts, there’s my appearance as well.
Just what the hell happened?
“Oi.”
I stared at the mage and called out to him.
Maybe because of the sudden surge of power, I was awfully arrogant.
“Y-yes?”
“What the hell happened?”
“Don’t you know, sir? I mean don’t you know, child?”
Oh? He is so scared to the point of calling a 6-year old child by ‘sir’?
“No.”
“Well, the rune you’ve obtained is …”
“Is?”
“Is a True Blessing.”
“A True Blessing?”
“Master! Is it really a True Blessing?”
“The runes don’t lie. Besides, haven't you seen his appearance, he is clearly in blessed mode.”
“A True Blessing in their first bestowal? What a monster.”
In a world where children are exposed to magic early on in their lifes, John, the eldest son of a low-nobilty family that lives in a village far away from the big cities, is considered to be blessed by the divine beings known as Celestials, however soon he discovers that amidst a blessing there's always a curse.
