It was midnight when Asheron and Damian arrived at Randells. They didn't take the usual car. Even though it wasn't really a 'stealth' mission, Damian insisted on trying to be more low key.
Asheron glanced at him. His cheeks were slightly red and no matter how hard he tried to keep a straight face he couldn't hide his excitement.
"Let's go."
They crossed the street to the entrance. There was a vampire leaning against the rusty metal door with his arms crossed. His eyes were closed as he tapped his finger to the beat of the music inside.
When he heard Asheron and Damian approach he opened his red eyes. They fell on Asheron first. He knew Asheron was a noble but he didn't seem surprised or interested. As for Damian, he gave him a fleeting look before reaching for the door handle and sliding the door open.
Asheron saw the muscle in the vampires arm bulge. Dispite how flimsy the door looked it was heavy even to a vampire. It would be impossible for a human to get in...or out if they really wanted to.
Asheron frowned at the thought as he looked at the vampire.
Once the door was open the music burst forth. Asheron winced at first but his sensitive ears instantly adjusted to the music. And as he walked into the club the sounds became more like vibrations. He could feel them throughout his body.
The door was slid shut behind them and they were plunged into darkness. The only light came from the flashes multicolored spot lights.
Asheron could still see a bit even with the flashing lights, but he was concerned for Damian.
He grabbed Damian's wrist and pulled him close.
"Stay alert. " He said into his ear.
Damian squinted through the flashing lights at him and nodded.
Asheron inhaled and was hit with the smell of sweat, perfume....and blood.
He grimaced and held his breath. He wondered if he could just go home and say that he found nothing. But It was too late to back out. He was already there.
Looking up he saw a booth on the second floor. It must be for the VIP members of the club. Asheron hoped he might find the owner of the club there. Who better was there to ask than the owner himself and it would save him some time.
Damian was holding on to the belt of Asheron's coat as he weaved through the club. Humans and vampires alike were dancing and pressing against each other and doing other things Asheron didn't want to think about. It was almost impossible to get through.
Eventually they managed to make it to the stairs on the side of the club that leading to the second level. Two bodyguards stood at the very top. They had their arms crossed like the vampire outside, but their rapidly beating heart let Asheron know that they were human, and seemed to have no intention of moving aside.
Asheron stared up at them blankly. He knew humans didn't have the same senses as vampires, so they wouldn't know that he was a noble. But he knew they at least could tell there was something about him that was different from the other vampires that they'd seen at the club.
Sure enough their muscles suddenly tensed. Their human senses were telling them to run, but they refused to listen to them. They were ready to fight.
"Let them through." A man's voice said from over the stairs. His voice wasn't too deep or too high and it seemed clear even over the loud music.
Asheron walked passed the guards followed by Damian, who nearly tripped on the way up. He glanced back at him before looking at the vampire who spoke.
He had dark skin and medium length braids. He was laid back on the couch with his arm thrown over a beautiful girl in a dark blue dress.
"To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit Lord Asheron."
"You know who I am?" Asheron asked peering at him. He was sure he'd never met this vampire before.
He smiled. "I am acquainted with many nobles and those I am not acquainted with, I know much about."
"I see." Asheron supposed that it really wouldn't be strange to be known by common vampires, but it still felt strange. He was a private person so there shouldn't be that many pictures of him floating around.
Asheron made a mental note to look into Randell when he had the chance.
Getting back to the point, he began asking the questions he had planned out.
"A vampire named Veronica has gone missing. I was informed she was a regular here. Do you know anything about it?"
"Veronica?" Randell put a finger to his chin in pretend thoughtfully. "Ah yes. She was Lord's Henry's lover. How has he been?"
"He's fine." Asheron answered curtly. "Do you know what happened to her?"
Randell smiled and shrugged. "I have no idea what happened to her. Maybe she found something more interesting to do. It's really too bad. She was very popular here", Randell grinned flashing his fangs, "Especially with nobles."
Asheron felt sudden tug on his sleeve. It was Damian, but Asheron couldn't focus on him at the moment. He wanted to wrap this up.
"So you didn't notice anything the day she disappeared? Was she with anyone?"
It was then that the girl next to Randell moved. It was only the slight flicker of her eyes going to Randell and back. But Asheron caught it.
"Someone besides Lord Henry? That I don't know. Like I said, I don't know what happened to her."
"Fa- Ash!"
"Just a moment." Asheron said to Damian without looking at him. He was staring at Randell. He knew something. He just wasn't saying anything, and Asheron didn't think he would have much luck getting him to talk.
Asheron sighed.
"I have one more question. That door at the entrance. It's heavy even for vampires. What if the humans wanted to leave?"
Randell sought back in his chair. A smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"They can't leave until the parties over. What concern are the humans to you?"
As he said this Randells eyes turned to the spot next to him.
"They're not." Asheron said as he looked over only to see no one. Asheron's eyes widened. Damian wasn't there.
Without a second thought, Asheron was over the rail. He could faintly hair the sound of Randells laughter as he fell.
