I stared at Caleb as he leaned closer. My mind was going a mile a minute like, what was I supposed to do? This was like my first kiss, let alone my first kiss with the most popular guy in the school. What if I suck at it, or what do I do if he does more than just kissing? Oh my god. But my question was left unanswered when my phone went off, and I jumped, and Caleb moved away from me, getting off the bench.
"Um s- sorry," I said, scrambling to find my phone. I pulled out my phone, looked at who was calling me, and saw that it was my sister. I internally groaned and looked at Caleb, who was looking starting at me.
"Everything okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, it is just my sister," I said, and he nodded, walking over to his stuff by the window. I watched him grab his stuff and start heading toward the exit stopping at the bench.
"I am going to go. I wanna practice some plays before the other guys come in," Caleb said.
"Uh yeah, sure," I said, disappointed, watching Caleb walk towards the door. I turned back, about to answer my phone, but I heard Caleb calling me.
"Hey, what are you doing tomorrow?" He said.
"Um, well, it's a Saturday, and I am most likely just staying at home working on some songs and maybe watching a movie," I said. God, I sound so lame.
"Well, if you get bored, I am throwing a party. It would be best if you came," Caleb said.
"Uh yeah, sure. I mean, I will see," I said, and Caleb smiled.
"Cool and feel free to invite Tia," He said, and I felt my heart sink. But, of course, he was not inviting me, he was interested in my friend, and he was asking me to be nice. I feel like such a fool I am reading into something that is not even true.
"Yeah, of course," I said with the fakest smile.
"Okay, well, I'll talk to you later. Bye, Steven," Caleb said, and I gave him a small waved and watched him walk out the door. I stared at the door for a while, and my phone rang again, pulling me from whatever thoughts I had. So I turned to the piano, looked down at my phone, and saw my sister's ID. I answered and put my phone on speaker, placing it on top of the piano.
"Hi," I said flatly.
"It is about time you answered. Wait, why do you sound like that?" She said.
"Like what, Nina?" I said.
"Like when they killed off that guy in the book you were reading," Nina said.
"I'm fine. I am working on some songs," I said, and she huffed.
"Fine, but you will tell me what is going on when you are ready, right?" She said. I love that my sister is concerned for me after everything, but sometimes it gets overbearing.
"Why are you calling Nina," I asked.
"Well, I was calling because I heard the drive-in is doing a showing of Captain America tomorrow. I wanted to know what snacks I am getting?" Nina said.
"Um, I will be busy on Saturday," I said.
"Oh, come on, Stevie, your music can wait. It is Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan, our husbands," Nina said.
"I might be going to a party," I said, and my sister squeaked.
"You are going to a party! What are you going to wear? Oh my god, who invited you?" Nina asked.
"Well, I don't even know if I am going because when they asked me, they told me to invite Tia, which means they want to get close to Tia," I said.
"Who are they?" She asked.
"Um, well, is that important?" I said.
"Yes, so tell me, Stevie," Nina said.
"Ugh, fine, it is Caleb Post," Nina fell silent. " Uh, hello, you there?" I asked, and she coughed.
"Um, you are saying that the most popular guy in your school and your biggest crush invite you to his party, and you might not go? Are you stupid!" She said.
"Are you forgetting when I said he is only asking me because he is interested in Tia?" I said.
"Okay, so let's analyze that for a moment, shall we? How did he ask you?" Nina said.
"Well, he asked if I was free on Saturday, and then he said to feel free to invite Tia," I said.
"Okay, now I'm going to gloss over the fact you might have missed some things, but if he said that, he didn't mean to invite her because he likes her. He meant it as invite her because he doesn't want you to feel uncomfortable. So there is a chance that there are feelings there," she stated.
"Nina, no, because let me tell you something, he came to the music room this morning too, and the ENTIRE time he was focused on Tia and ONLY Tia. So sorry, but the only thing he thinks about me is that I am an easy route to win her over," I said, playing a note.
"I don't know Stevie, my gut is never wrong about things, and my gut is telling me that he likes you," Nina said.
"Well, my gut is telling me to hang up the phone and focus on my music," I said, and Nina sighed loudly.
"Fine. Will I see you later tonight?" She asked.
"Maybe it is movie night tonight," I said.
"Oh, right, I forgot. Will you stop by the diner before you go to Tia's?" She asked.
"Maybe no promises," I said.
"Fine, love you lots. Bye," She said.
"Love you too," I hung up the phone, banged my head onto the keys, and sighed.
I started to feel embarrassed because I was one of those guys that fell for the popular straight guy and started to get my hopes up and read into things to find out that he never liked me. He was only friends with me to get close to my friend, and that was only in my head. So I threw my head back and stared at the ceiling having the scenes of Caleb interacting with me in my head play repeatedly. God, I am an idiot. I shook my head and decided to do what I originally came here to do: work on my music. So I sighed, closed my eyes, and started to play, hoping that whatever I felt for Caleb might be over soon.
Steven was always the outcast who always turned to music whenever life got complicated, but what happens when the most popular guy in school starts taking an interest in him? will Steven reject his advances or give in and fall for the guy?
