Dawn breaks, calm and cool. Robin is already awake as Mal stumbles, half awake, to the kitchen. “Good morning, there is coffee on the counter. Two spoonfuls of sugar, a dash of creamer, and a touch of caramel.”
Absentmindedly kissing her, “Thank you. So what’s the plan?” Mal says as he grabs the cup and sits on the counter stool then after a moment, realizing what he just did, “uh, was that okay? It just felt natural.”
A face as red as a strawberry, Robin says, “yes. That was okay. Anyway, the plan!”
“Tom, one of our informants, stopped by already with a ton of information.” Robin walks over and grabs a folder and hands it to Mal who proceeds to open it.
“As you can see, there is a ton of activity there but that large guy you described to me wasn’t seen going there. I’m not convinced that it’s their main operation but rather an important site. Worth checking out at least. I called our guys and put them on standby and thought we could sneak in ourselves and check it out.”
“That is the smart play here and if it is nothing, we can burn it down for fun to screw with them.”
“I was thinking the same thing but so we can follow them back home.”
“Mhm, that too. Mhm.” he says as he sips his coffee.
“Well, I also got some info myself. Doc left a message. Apparently, that big guy came into his clinic. He was beaten to hell and severely infected by Infernal energy. So not only is he alive but he is currently sitting in Docs office right now.”
“That’s good for us isn’t it? Means they were caught off guard too. They will be scrambling without their boss. This is the perfect time to hit them.” Robin says as she flips through the file.
“Too bad we can’t take him out right now.”
“You know Innerstation is a conflict free zone. No one can violate that.” Robin says with a knowing glance.
“I know! I’m just sayin’.” Mal chugs his coffee and slams the mug down. “Alright, Let’s go!”
They both get fully dressed, get cleaned up, and start Heading downtown. The buildings go from new modern design to old hundred year old brick. Each has a unique design until you finally land on the large brick and blackened steel factory they were looking for.
They circle the building a few times until they locate a perfect entry point. The roof connects to the abandoned building across the street. After parking and waiting a good hour or so, they decide to move in.
With a little force, Mal is able to open the door of the abandoned building and they make their way up.
“Hold on, Mal.”
“What is it?”
“Stop here for a second.” Robin sits on the ground and motion for Mal to join her. “Opposite side of me. Take my hands.” after doing so, robin begins a spell. “Hand in hand. A whisper. On wind and glisten of light, render us unnoticeable tonight.” like heat rising from hot pavement, the light begins to bend and misshapen around them.
“Now, as long as you don’t make unnecessary noise, we will go unnoticed until we wish to be seen.”
“Woah, cool. On account of how our race works, I do get to see legit magic often so this is like some harry potter shit. Very cool, Robin,”
Not letting go of his hand, Robin leads them to the other building. Slowly they make their way through the door and past the walkway, they enter the brick building. Mal, slows his heart beat and takes in each noise. After a moment or two, he sees that there are no other living people here.
“We are clear.”
As they both breathe a sigh of relief and reach the balconies’ edge, they are filled with shock and fear.
