He woke up and looked around feeling that he wasn’t alone in the house, it took him a few moments to remember that he had a personal chef and he brought along his daughter. He wasn’t too sure of what happened over the week but he felt more relieved than he realized. He doesn’t normally feel safe when other people are in the house with him, at least safe enough to sleep around them with his door unlocked. He sat up and looked at his phone. Sunday 6:07 AM, he got up and started his laptop entered the password and got this things ready for the day.
Decided to smell like Roses and Cherries today, he gathered his things and went to the bathroom across the hall to shower.
He walked out dressed in the dark blue three piece suit and walked to his room and started the e-mail. He wrote about his past few days, then erased it and talked about his new chef then erased that too. He wrote that everything was the usual and started going on about her. Then ended it with: I know your busy but a simple ‘Hi’ from you would be nice. Just so I know you are getting my e-mails and calls.
He hovered over the ‘Send’ and quickly got rid of the last part and then sent it. “I shouldn’t pressure her to call me or write back. If she can she can if not then that should be fine.” He got up from his laptop after shutting it down and walked out to a delicious smell, confused he walked to the kitchen and was surprised to see someone in it and a little girl sitting happily at the counter.
“Morning boss, today’s breakfast is Ham and Cheese Omelette with Shredded Hashbrowns,” he sounded happy and he looked very relaxed in the big kitchen. It looked as if they settled very quickly but he could feel that it was only for show. He was worried about something and the little girl looked shy and wanted to run to her father’s side.
“Sounds good,” he said and sat far from the little girl and watched as the two idly talked to each other saying what they learned yesterday and what they were going to do for the day.
“I wan egg spore,” the little girl said.
“You can explore the house, just stay out of my room and the last door downstairs on the right is locked. The pool is being covered for the winter, I think only the sauna and hot tub will be free to use.” He turned to his chef and said: “The center room downstairs will need to be locked as well or maybe just supervised while she’s in there. I don’t think you’d want her near the minibar.”
“Can I ask how you can understand her?” the chef asked instead.
“I have a sister that’s 5 years younger than me, looked after her until she went to collage.” The chef set the omelette in front of him and ate a few mouthfuls almost getting lost in the feeling of warmth and safety.
“You have any other siblings?” he didn’t feel like the guy was prying, he was just curious. It was nice, how long has it been since he last talked to someone, really talk to them. Especially over breakfast?
“I have an older half-sister and an older half-brother. You?” he finished the omelette and watched as his chef got busy with cleaning the dishes.
“Younger sister, to be honest never really cared about her until after Ari was born. Speaking of, I need to call her.”
“Good idea, let’s both get yelled at early in the morning,” his chef chuckled. “’You never call!’ I called you yesterday, ‘That doesn’t count!’ Of course it does, how’s school going? ‘Terrible! I got a B!’ Oh no! Did it sting you? ‘Shut up!’” the chef was hanging off the sink now, laughing. “I hope your sister goes easy on you. I’m gonna get ripped to pieces, I haven’t called her in a month.”
He stood up and got his things together, he left a card on the table stating that it was his number and if he was going out to call the last two numbers for a ride or help with bringing stuff back. He walked out of the house bidding them a good day and got in the car to head to work.
“Daddy, we egg spore now?”
“Soon Sweetheart, I need to call Auntie,” he dialed up his sister ‘Demon of the Abyss’ and was getting a sense of deja vu. “Morning,” he said.
“You never call!” Amaya stated clearly annoyed, she must be switching classes.
“I called you yesterday.” he said remembering the call he made last night to her.
“That doesn’t count!” he was almost at a loss for words but luckily his boss provided him the whole conversation before hand.
“Of course it does, how’s school going?” Amaya was going for Nursing.
“Terrible! I got a B!” he couldn’t help but laugh and wondered if his boss was psychic. This was strangely the way he said it would. “Don’t say it!”
“Oh no! Did it sting you?” he got out finally and laughed more.
“SHUT UP! You are a terrible father! Stupid dad jokes, what happened last night? Did you get the job? Are you ok?”
“Not going to lie, I got the job, Ari and I are staying as a live in chef. It’s pretty good pay and he seems nice. He brought over Ari’s bedroom and gave her her own room and she gets to pick out a playroom. The place is big,” he wanted to talk more but suddenly stopped. “What?”
“Is he cute? He sounds rich, did he pay your debts? Has he treated you or Ari badly? Probably not because he’d want to lure you in.”
“Amaya, he’s not like that... I don’t think, the contract was clearly in my favour. He didn’t mention about debts, just told me when he’d be up and when he’d leave and when he gets back. We are free to look around the place as we want except for his room and the pool.”
“The guy has a pool? Indoor?”
“It must be if it’s locked, he figures that the hot tub and sauna are the only ones going to be free and the pool was going to be covered.”
“So he sounds rich, the contract is in your favour, he told you what rooms are off limits, my guess that the downside is sex with him every night.”
“What? No!”
“What does he look like? Is he a thug or something?”
“He’s tall, black bed head hair, silver eyes, and a deep voice. He doesn’t have any tattoo’s or piercings, he looks skinny like he doesn’t work out at all and is childish and smells great.”
“Oddly specific. Have you been checking out your boss?”
“What? No! He’s scary! He looks as if he’d kill you for even breathing! Why would you think I like him?”
“Hm, I would like to meet your new husband!”
“Amaya! It’s not like that!” the call ended before his sister could hear him. He suddenly felt as if he wanted to tell his boss how the call went when he went searching for his number in the phone. Only to realize it wasn’t there. He put a hand to his face leaning on the kitchen counter his other hand had the phone hanging loosely.
“Daddy?” he straightened up and picked Ari up and set her on the floor.
“Let’s explore,” he said and they started to walk around the top floor and made their way down.
He leaned
back in his chair, finished with sorting out the late payers.
Greenbell still has no result on the last Shark of his chef and
wonder if it was an old one. “Where’s Kathrine? Shouldn’t she
have sorted out the old files?” he asks.
“Indeed, I’ll get on it after I bring your lunch. Have you contacted your sister yet?”
“Oh right, I’ll do that now since I have nothing to do at the moment.” He pulled up his phone and looked through his list and found her at the bottom under ‘XcallmeanddieX’ he forgot how foreboding that name was and wondered why he let her do that. He pushed the call button and got ready to be yelled at for calling.
“Hi, brother! What’s up?” he forgot how cheerful she was and relaxed at her soft tone.
“Not much, I found myself a personal chef.”
“Really? Wonderful! What are they like? Do they make food food?”
“He’s... good? He has a daughter so he can’t be all that bad right?”
“Do you have a picture of him? Is he cute?”
“Don’t try to date my staff. And I don’t really know, haven’t really looked at him.”
“Oh come on! Some details at least? What colour is his hair? Eyes? How tall is he? What’s his sign?” he realized that he didn’t know, appearance never really mattered to him so he never looks at people other than what they wear. “How you two talked at least?”
“A bit, he has a little sister, I think he calls her often.” He tried to remember what else was talked about, “I think he has a good sense of humour, he laughed when I imitated our call. I think what got him was the dad joke I threw in.”
“My god, you’re the worst. Was it the ‘I got a B!’ Oh no! Did it sting you?’ one? I bet that was the one. So predictable. I remember you used that a lot when I was going to high school until I either got a C or an A. Great motivator BTW, it certainly made me stop complaining about my grades, at least to you.”
“You hear about the Pirate?”
“Yes, I heard he loved the C but would settle for an Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.”
“Ha, looking after you was torturous. I hated every second BTW.”
“So you going to tell dad jokes with him and bond? I bet his daughter would love you. Oh! Is she cute? How old is she?”
“Uh, she’s scared of me, I’d say she’s 5?”
“Of course she would be scared of you, you don’t smile at all. Winter break will be soon, can I stay with you?”
“That’s a 4 hour drive! Of course I’ll pick you up. When do you want me to head over?”
“I’ll call you, I’ll have my things ready by the time you come over and School is doing just fine in it’s fish tank.”
“Wait that turtle is still alive?”
“Of course! School is the best, aren’t you School?” He heard a small tap from something hitting the phone. “Don’t eat my brother! Only his wife can do that!”
“Hero!”
“I’m not a little girl anymore!”
“I don’t want to hear it! Let me keep the image of that little girl!”
“For how long? Until you start dating again?”
“Ashlynn is still my girlfriend, she’s in Paris finishing her culinary degree. She plans on travelling then starting her own restaurant.”
“Yeah, yeah. Face it she forgot about you, move on and find a nice girl that would actually take care of you. I still remember that she forgot about you for a week in that room, when you were tied up. That was the stupidest thing she ever did and she doesn’t deserve your love.”
“It wasn’t a week, quit exaggerating.”
“Oh, ugh never mind. How do you get your food in the morning?”
“He’s a live-in, I guess something happened at his home. I don’t know all the details.”
“You know nothing about him and yet you let him and his daughter stay with you in that house? What happened to ‘Know every detail about the person before you let them in your life’? You’re not usually this careless when it comes to meeting new people.”
“I- well, um.”
“Well as long as you feel safe around them I guess it’s alright but make sure your bodyguards are on standby in case something does happen. Like him taking advantage of you, like letting you starve and fattening his daughter up instead.”
“If he was Greenbell wouldn’t let him near me, she checked everything and I trust her judgment.”
“Ok, as long as your badass Secretary slash Driver slash Bodyguard says that he’s fine then I won’t worry too much. At least until I get there or you say otherwise.”
“Tomorrow’s my main bodyguard now,”
“Tony Morrow? Sweet, does he approve your chef?”
“He hasn’t said anything but I’m sure he agrees with Greenbell. Same with the rest of my bodyguards.”
“Alright, well take care of him and hopefully he’ll do the same.”
“His cooking reminds me of mom.”
“Oh? Then I have to meet him and try out his cooking! Now I have something to look forward to, also talk about mom a lot while I’m there. Tell me every detail you remember! Oh! I have to get going! My alarm just went off for my next class. Love ya lots!” she hung up and he relaxed in his chair after spinning around in it lazily. He wasn’t sure when he started doing that during the call but it felt soothing.
Yawning he figured it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take a bit of a nap, he got through most of his work already all that there was left was to poke around his finances and look through what needs to be done around the place. His men mostly took care of the businesses that had loans and if he was needed they would call him and he’d be there. So far the businesses that had loans paid back really quick as soon as they started making a profit.
He’ll have to visit them to catch up and see how their business was doing. He’ll tell Greenbell about it that way he can get away from this box for awhile. Stretching a bit, he then straightened out and wrote down in his notes of his next plan so Greenbell can fit it into his schedule.
An hour later, Greenbell walked in with his lunch. He started eating and listened to Greenbell idly talk of what happened at home.
“So far he explored the place with his daughter and spent most of the time in the garden playing. He seems to be settling in fine and has forgotten about his job at Lucky Duke’s.”
“I don’t need to know his day-to-day, just tell me if he is doing something suspicious. Have a few bodyguards on him as well.”
“Already have, Mars and Quiver are with him keeping watch. Alice and Mary are with the girl.”
“Are you sure having Quiver and Mary together is a good idea? You know how brothers are about competitions especially with the girls they like.” He finished his lunch and set the box aside.
“Reason why I put them together. Since Quiver wants to impress Alice and Mary wants to impress Mars it would be good that they’ll keep a better watch on them.”
“Mm, alright,” he said and stretched then announced that he’s going to have a nap upstairs. He got up and walked out, Greenbell following behind until they reached the hallway that lead out. Greenbell turned down that hall and he continued on to the elevator.
Laying down he stared at the ceiling thinking of what his sister said, ‘He won’t be like her,’ he thought and closed his eyes.
He wasn’t sure what woke him but something was happening downstairs and he felt the need to rush down there quickly. So he did, he reached the gym where he heard screaming. He opened the door and looked inside and seen that everyone was just fine. No one was hurt, he clearly sees everyone.
“What?” he said confused and started looking over the equipment quickly telling everyone to get off them.
“Is that what you call the ‘Dragon Sense’?” someone whispered and he found the one that was giving him a warning of danger.
“How long has this been like that?” He asked and pulled the bar quickly and suddenly it crashed down, everyone backed up quickly as the thick steel wire flung around wildly and stopped. The weights that held broke to pieces and some flung in every direction. The bench was ripped by the wire and some of the weights rested where a head and torso might have been.
“We check the equipment everyday, we’ll order some new weights and wires. We’ll check the women’s equipment as well and they’ll give ours a second check. If we find anything we’ll put the equipment ‘Out of Order’ until it’s fixed or a new one replaces it.” Tony said and everyone agreed, “Zuke, tell the women what happened and what’s going to happen next.”
“Got it,” a man walked out. He put the steel bar down on the bench and walked out to get cleaned up.
