“I uh—sure thing.” Ken responded, placing a few dollar bills down onto the desk.
“Here’s for the long-distance calls.”
“Three dollars for a hundred long-distance calls?!” The woman shouted, looking down at the paltry amount of cash on the desk.
“Let’s talk outside!” Ken said, returning to their usual smiley demeanor as they passed. Alister and Tatsumi followed Ken as they ran out of the building, trying not to drive any more ire out of the woman working the desk. A moment passed and the trio sat outside of the arcade. The neon lights shut off as soon as their feet stepped out of the premises. The autumn night outside was a pleasantly cool temperature, and a slight breeze chilled the air further.
“Alright.” Alister said, facing Ken.
“What do you mean by ‘Other Half’? And how do you know my name?” Ken shifted around, fiddling with the palmtop computer in their satchel.
“It’s kinda hard to explain... Give me a second.” They said, still typing with their thumbs on the keyboard of the small device.
“Then explain it; I’ve got all night.” Alister uttered. The payphone outside of Blackwell’s rang.
“And what is it with you and Starman?” He followed.
“I just think it’s fun!” Ken giggled, looking up from their computer.
“Also– who is this?” Ken pointed at Tatsumi.
“This is a client of mine. Keep him out of whatever the hell you’re doing.” Alister quickly said, stepping forward.
“Client? Are you an escort or something?” Alister’s demeanor soured further as Ken said this. He continued to approach Ken, pulling a card out from his blazer’s pocket.
“Explain. Or I’m going to use your esophagus as a straw.” Alister pressed the card against Ken’s throat, drawing a few drops of blood. Ken froze, and spoke with clear, deliberate prose.
“Alister, you and I are broken.”
