My Nanny Liz was a very keen admirer of Tilly, and even when dementia meant she forgot most of our names Tilly was never ever forgotten. When Nanny got really unwell she moved into a nursing home and we would often take Tilly to the nursing home to visit her, where Tilly despite normally bouncing around full of beans would lie quietly at Nan’s feet. The truth behind the demure display was that Nanny dropped crumbs when she was eating, so in this position Tilly was in the prime location to hoover up around her. Nanny would also constantly try and feed all her food to Tilly rather than eat it herself, so we had to keep a very close eye on this naughty duo! Tilly also got on very well with my some of my nieces and nephews. My sister’s youngest son adored her and had his special Tilly voice. Obviously you can never completely trust children and dogs together so we would always be closely supervising them. When Tilly was elderly and could no longer hear we explained how she could get scared and jumpy if you touched her from behind. He took this in his stride, always being so gentle and making sure she could see him. Safe to say he was devastated when she passed away… but that is for later in the story.
