While I was busy admiring the palace corridors, I noticed only too late that Ridley and I had come to a stop. I look up and see that we're standing before a grand pair of doors, that go up as high as the ceiling. I find myself staring up wide-eyed in awe, and I must have looked like a twit because Ridley gives me a nudge. Immediately, I compose myself.
From the corners of my eyes, I see that a guard flanks each side of the door, clad from head to toe in armor with a strange symbol on the breastplate. Which means that we aren't alone. I remind myself to not slip up when there are others around me, or else I might be risking my life.
It seems that I'm not the only one nervous. I watch as Ridley hesitates in front of the door and takes a deep breath. She turns around to face me, the expression on her face grave. "You remember everything I told you earlier?"
I give a slow nod. How could I possibly forget, now that I know it's all a novel's plot? A novel I once loved and cherished?
I grumble out a reply when she gives me an unsatisfied frown, but I'm too bummed out say anything else. Why could I not have become the princess? I'm already screwed, thrown into the middle of a world I know only little about, so why did I have to become a maid? A MAID, goddamit! I peer at my scratchy uniform with distaste and let out a pent up sigh.
"What's wrong?" Ridley whispers as she reaches for the door.
I shake my head. "Nothing," I mutter, for she will never understand. "Let's not waste time," I say as I give her a push and watch as the doors fly open.
Ridley stands aside and curtsies. Afraid to mess up, I duck into a clumsy bow myself, not yet knowing who it is I'm doing it for. It is only when a sweet, honey-like voice tells us to rise is when I allow myself to study what appears to be the princess' chambers.
Now I'll have you know that there are only a few things that have impressed me through the course of my life, but nothing could ever beat this moment. This one room could fit a whole house back from my world, and I don't realize my mouth is hanging open before Ridley gives me another nudge. Again. Ridley to the rescue!
The room is massive! The far wall opposite me is made up of nothing but glass, that shows out into a beautiful garden, one decorated with trees and flowers like nothing I've ever seen before. To the left is a bed that makes me question if there's a size larger than a king-sized bed. Decorated with sheer pink curtains, it's so big it could fit a whole crowd. I watch in awe as maids scurry around the room, making the bed as if someone had just been sleeping in it earlier.
I turn and see a woman in the midst of the room, her hair so bright and fair that I have to blink several times in fear of going blind. She sits on a thick, velvety chair under a chandelier dripping with grandeur as a pair of maids brush out her hair.
"Your highness," Ridley says beside me, causing me to startle out of my daze.
The woman doesn't other turning in her seat. "Speak," she says, with the same, honey-like voice and an air of superiority.
"I have brought you Adalynne Cleaver, just as you requested."
At this she puts up a hand and the maids around her stand back. I take a shaky breath as she turns around in her seat, directly facing me. I've read the novel so I'm quite familiar with Princess Delphine's appearance, but my God.
Transmigration always seemed like a joke to Hana Kang until she woke up as Adalynne Cleaver, loyal maid to the famed beauty of the Empire of Serling.
Sent on a spying mission by her mistress to the neighboring Empire of Xek, Ada is forced to rely on the knowledge of this Novel-bound world and her trusty friend, Ridley, with whose help they uncover the secrets of the Xek Royalty, and maybe more. . .
