I could hear a voice in my head speaking to me. Focusing, I could finally hear what it was saying.
A mage’s duty is to observe and record the natural world. To do so is to uphold it. Mages, not unlike other magical classes, draw their mana from their surroundings. This allows them to store the mana within themselves and use it when needed. Depending on what type of mage you become, you may find yourself more powerful in familiar environments. Part of the process of becoming a fully-fledged mage is determining what element you are best attuned with as well as what fighting style best suits you. For some players, these details have already been discovered, however for others, they are yet to be determined.
That’s right, Mochi was given a rogue class and Tilda was given a healer class, unlike my class which is a more “open concept” magic class.
You will discover more about your class as you level up and complete quests related to it. In terms of using your magic, you will be granted a few starter spells for tutorial and training purposes. You can choose to level up these spells or venture for and discover more powerful magics for you to wield. When accessing your spells, some may require materials in order to properly perform them, others you may only need to focus on the spell you would like to use, and speak its incantation. Any spells that you have unlocked may be found in your skill screen, or a spellbook if one is equipped.
We hope that you survive to see the end, Sel.
Suddenly I’m brought back to reality. The golem removes its hand from atop my head. That was weird. I could barely make out what it said at the end, but whatever it was doesn’t sit very well with me. Wiping my eyes with the back of my sleeve I reorient myself. The small training golems are still there, waiting.
“Do I have to fight them?” I asked the tutorial golem.
“Spells.”
“Huh?” even the training golems looked a little perplexed. Oh right, I should probably check what spells I was given. Focusing on the skill screen I was brought straight to it. A new tab had been added. Ok, so I have a tab filled with the spells I’ve learned along with the details of how much mana they use and my overall understanding of them. This is going to be a lot to get used to. My brain never really could wrap around all the intricate workings when it came to spellcasting in games. In most cases, I just wanted to spam buttons until it gave me the result I wanted. Not that being a knight didn’t involve lots of thought and tactics. As well as being the leader of a successful guild when it came to raids, but being a knight always seemed easier for me. You’re either stronger or weaker than your opponent, sure there are combos and equipment buffs, but in the end, you’re either stronger or weaker, there’s not a lot in between.
Let’s see what spells I have…
Spells: Mana Blast (common) Lvl 1, Aura Burst (uncommon) Lvl 1, Fiery Aura (rare) Lvl 1
Okay, so it looks like the first two are long and short-range attacks respectively and the last one is a type of buff. Focusing more on Fiery Aura, more information presented itself.
[Fiery Aura] - Lvl 1
This skill works as a buff by providing the target with increased strength and speed for a limited time of 3 minutes. Increases strength by 120% and speed by 140%
Next Lvl - 3 min 30 sec, strength +125%, speed +145%
Seems like this one won’t be really good unless I level it up a ton. Anyway, I think these should be good enough for training practice. Turning back to the golem I gave him a nod to show that I was ready. The golem hobbled over to the side of the courtyard, leaving me to my training.
“Okay,” I said, grasping my staff. “Let’s see what these little guys got.”
The small golems turned to each other before starting after me, arms flailing above them like possessed gremlins. Letting out a small shriek, I quickly moved back in order to keep some of the distance between us. Focusing on my spells I tried using one of the offensive spells.
“Mana Blast!” I watched as mana flowed from my palms into the wooden staff, building at the end, until it finally fired. The training golems watched as it flew past them and bounced off of one of the stone walls before almost hitting me. I was on the ground again after scrambling to miss being hit by the beam of light. A fresh scorch mark smoked the ground. Gazing back at the golems, they seemed to chuckle to each other in their own stony way. Starting after me again, I scrambled to my feet, but it was too late. Just as quickly as I had gotten back up to my feet, I was down again. My chin scraped the cobblestone ground. Pushing myself onto my back, I wiped the gravel off of my face. A bright red caught my eye as I examined my hand further. As I wiped more blood from my face my vision started to blur.
Ding.
[Fiery Aura Lvl 1 has been activated]
Everything around me seemed to slow down. The world itself was like looking through rose-tinted glasses. So this is fiery aura? Taking my staff in hand, I finally regained my footing. Hmm… I wonder. I hoasted the staff above my head. It came down with a BANG as one of the training golems broke apart. The other two seemed to notice and started to slowly turn back, however they weren’t fast enough. Within the 3-minute time limit, I had returned all three of the low-level golems back to pebbles. Bending a knee, the aura dissipated. Blood continued to slowly trickle from my neck onto the ground below me. Mroah, Grendel mewed as he rubbed against the back of my leg. Where’d he run off to during all of that? His leash was trailing behind him. I wrapped the leash around my staff and laid it down next to me. Looking back at the tutorial golem it seemed almost surprised.
“What?” I asked.
“Um… that’s certainly an interesting way of dealing with your problems,” I was taken slightly aback by the golem's change of speech.
“Look here! I didn’t want to be a Mage in the first place, I suck at it! In games, and I guess real life as well. You said to defeat the little guys so I did. Am I done here?”
Ehm. “Yes, I suppose you’re done. But a word of warning, don’t rely too much on brute strength alone. It won’t always be enough to help you,” its long arms reached down, placing another reward box at my feet. And with another wave of its hands, the walls opened up to the outside world.
“Let’s see what we got in this one.”
Congratulations on completing the [Mage] tutorial. Your rewards are as follows: [Yule’s staff of wisdom, 5 lesser mana potions, and 50 orbs]
Walking towards home, I was met with yet another cryptic message from John.
_knightMare: Prentice pass. Come follow the hills.
“Okay, now I’m sure he’s lost his mind. What does that even mean?” Prentice pass… “Is that a place?” Oh well, I’ll find out soon enough I guess. “John, John, John… What does the future hold for our little guild?”
