It was a day like any other for the girl named Blair, but she was reminded of a time that is one of her worst memories, the one's from her childhood that split apart her first “friendship”. It was a rainy day just like the one that was going on now.
Blair and Ava were childhood friends who did everything together and they lived close to each other. They were joined at the hip and the pair was as about different as two people could be, but the contrast mattered not to the inseparable duo who loved each other’s company. Blair and Ava had weathered the gossip about how the two were as mismatched as they could be, and that Blair didn’t deserve to stand next to Ava’s side. It was on that fateful day that everything came crumbling down to the unaware Blair and she would not understand why her best friend was not there for her.
“Hey Ava, doesn’t everyone seem awfully different today? I mean more than the usual stuff we put up with.” Blair said with a suspicious look on her face.
“I don’t think so” Ava commented passingly “If it’s bothering you maybe we could just go home for today”
“I don’t think its that big of deal. It’ll probably go away if we ignore it”
The innocent Bair of the time had no idea of the life changing event that was about to happen on this day just because of the greed and jealousy of some people she didn’t even know.
After Blair and Ava both went their own way to class. Blair was stopped in the hallway by a bunch of girls she didn’t recognise.
“Hey are you, Blair? I mean the one who’s always sticking to Ava” said the girl in a hateful tone.
“Yes, I’m Ava’s best friend. What do you want with me?” Blair made sure to emphasize the best friend part to reinforce that her and Ava are close.
“The teacher called you and asked us to bring you to her” said the main girl being entirely fed up with even having to talk to this girl for so long.
“The teacher? What does she want with me? I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong....”
“I don’t know she just asked us to bring you. Now let’s go already”
Blair - being the shy girl she was - got swept up with flow and ended up following the girls. Something was off though as they weren’t heading to the office but to the outside courtyard where a group was gathered in a circle. Blair did not have a good feeing about this and wished she just had the courage to have walked away when she had the chance. She was thrown into the middle of the crowd by the girl who led her here. The girl took out a drink she had nearby and proceeded to dump the entire thing on Blair. Blair could not process what was going on nor could her body move due to the shocking event that had just happened.
“What are you doing !?!?” yelled Blair from the center of the noisy circle.
“I’m putting you in your place. Acting all high and mighty taking up Ava’s time. You’re like a stray clingy dog that needs some discipline and if I can get few laughs that doesn’t hurt either." said the girl with a mischievous grin.
Blair couldn’t believe what was happening. They were mad just because she was friends with Ava? Why? What was different between them and her that it warranted this much anger. Its not like she had clung onto to Ava purposely or tried to keep her for herself. She knew Ava was popular, but did that mean there was no room for Blair? Just as her thoughts were racing, she had looked up to the crowd and saw someone very familiar: it was Ava. She was just standing there amongst the crowd with a complicated look.
“Hey Ava!” Blair called out “Can you help me out and tell these people that this all a misunderstanding?”
But no answer came back only a look of pity as she turned around and left her in the circle. Blair truly could not understand what was happening and got up with her lifeless body to rush to the out of the crowd to the bathrooms where she cried until it was time to go home.
After that Blair had seen that Ava tried to reach her on her phone, but that was all and at school she no longer talked to Blair, like they were complete strangers. Blairs resentment and revulsion at the thought of Ava only completely tore apart their relationship to where they could not even glance each other’s way. Blair was now a lonely outcast who had turned herself inward and did not associate with anyone beyond what was necessary. The incident completely changed how Blair acted and eventually enough time passed where they were about to graduate high school. Blair had already blocked Ava on everything and had every intention to be rid of her for good.
Time had passed and memories faded or that’s what Ava wanted to happen. That one moment had replayed in her head countless times until she couldn’t think about it anymore. Why did she abandon her best friend who she loved? If that was what her love amounted to then she was sorely disappointed with herself. Nothing had changed since coming to college whether it be her social life or her love life. She was too distraught to even think about dating and honestly to busy with her classwork to even have a social life. She was still on the cheer squad like she was back in high school.
“Old habits die hard I guess” she said with a bit of loneliness on her face.
