Strawb

Dec 10, 2022

I watched as Do-yun skipped out of Gila’s room holding liquid foundation and concealer.

I’d been staring at the hallway for the past hour, through a chink in my door. I’d been thinking about what had happened, what Wim had done. I couldn’t get those though out of my  head the whole day.

My thoughts were devoted to that little piece of evidence. Just a simple bruise, that was possibly there. Possibly not. It was 50/50. Half and half. But those two halves were so important.

I couldn’t help but watch her, intently, as she crossed the landing. But something was strange. I squinted at her for several seconds until it clicked.

It wasn’t much but… Do-yun was wearing thigh-high socks.

I’d noticed that she preferred to wear shorts and skirts but she always wore ankle socks with them. I had never seen her wear any socks longer than her mid-calves before. It was strange, why had she suddenly changed?.

I carefully opened my door, creeping towards a cupboard that would provide cover for me.  I peaked past the cabinet at her, and, wrapped up in shadows, I snuck closer. She didn’t notice me as she strolled, nonchalantly, to her door. I shrank into a corner, letting the darkness hide me, as she punched in the code, and opened the door. As the door swung close behind her, I dived forward, and barely got my foot in before it could click and lock shut.

I froze. Had she noticed my loud goal-keaper leap? The thud as my foor met her door?

I scrambled onto my knees and pressed my face to the crack between the door and the frame as she sat on her bed, kicking off her sliders.

She hadn’t noticed.

She turned away from me, and sat so I couldn’t see her legs. But her position told me she’d propped up in front of her, presumably on a pillow.

One of her socks came off and she threw it onto the floor, carelessly. She hissed as she ripped a plaster off her skin and it also fell to the floor. She hummed a tune as she picked up the foundation and seemed to put it on her leg. Well, that was what she had to be doing.

I gulped, a sudden rush of anxiety filling me. Was Do-yun…? Was she…?

The foundation had rolled off the bed, and Do-yun cursed as a few drops spilled onto the floor because she hadn’t screwed the cap on properly.

My heart began to beat faster. This girl… It had to be her. But there was something that didn’t make sense. Why would Wim…?

I felt a tap on my back, mid-thought. Speak of the devil. Wim looked down at me, as I turned towards him, closing the door hastily. I’d been caught.

Something was unnerving about the way he looked at me. His eyes were dull and gloomy. “What are you doing?” he asked.

There's a murderer among them…

**This is my first novel, and I'm working to improve my writing so I'm open to any criticism and any tips that you can give me.**

**There will be death scenes so they'll be marked as mature.**
