“Why did Ellie leave me behind?” Skully grunted as he saw Luke approaching.
“She probably left you behind ‘cause you’re so grumpy. Like an old man.” Luke mumbled as he read the note on top of Skully.
“You’re one to talk… What the fudge are you doing at home anyway? Not out killing vampires today?” Skully grumbled.
Luke glanced down at Skully. “That’s my night time job. During the day I fix motorbikes, except the shop is closed every Thursday, which is today. What’s Ellie’s new job anyway? I thought she just started working at Dawn postal?” Luke remarked, picking Skully up and carrying him to the kitchen.
“Whoa, don’t just fudging pick me up without asking!?” Skully barked.
Luke placed him down on the counter, before he started rummaging through the fridge.
“Ugh, you know Ellie. She got offered a new job by Juliette Valentine, and jumped at it without a second thought. That’s where she is.”
Luke stopped what he was doing. “Juliette Valentine? Did you just say Juliette Valentine? As in the vampire Juliette Valentine?” Luke questioned, the tone of his voice intensified, he stood right in front of Skully.
“Yeah, that’s the one. I guess even you know who she is?” Skully proclaimed.
Luke furrowed his eyebrows and held his forehead, his fingers tensed up and he clicked his tongue. “Why would Ellie agree to such a thing? Does she know she’s a vampire? Wait… is that why she agreed to work for her? And why would she offer Ellie a job?” Luke stressed, his jaw clenched up.
“All very fudging valid questions. Ellie thinks she might have some leads about me. After last night, I’m not sure if she should be doing it alone though. She never listens to me anyway.” Skully sighed.
Luke clicked his tongue again, taking a chef knife out from the drawer. “What happened last night?” He asked Skully, cutting into a pineapple.
“Pineapple? What are you making? Fruits? Ah, yeah, about last night… I guess you didn’t talk to Artemis huh? Well, a vampire was waiting for us outside your apartment. I went into Ellie’s body, beat him up, and he ran away. End of story.” Skully grumbled.
Luke sliced hard into the pineapple.
“A vampire? Outside the apartment?” He shouted, his eyes darkened. Luke’s fist met the kitchen counter.
“And you just tell me this so casually?! Like it’s no big deal? Who was he?” Luke barked, his eyes narrowing, the muscles in his face tensing up.
“Whoa, look who’s all worked up!” Skully chuckled.
“Give me one good reason not to throw you out the window right now?” Luke thundered, his eyes even darker. Skully felt the energy in the room change, dark, menacing, suffocating.
“Fudge! The vampire was from the council, he came for me. To make sure I don’t come back, ok?” Skully bellowed across the kitchen.
Silence hit the room for a moment. Luke glanced at Skully, swiftly picking him up from the counter.
“What did I tell you about picking me up?” Skully grumbled.
“So the vampire council doesn’t want you to find your body? They will try to stop you themselves. This is perfect! Let them come… I will kill every last one of them.” Luke exclaimed, his lips curled up on one side, his darkened eyes looked as if they were ready to kill the whole world. He stabbed the chef knife into the cutting board. Skully tried his best not to say anything, the darkness in Luke’s eyes was a bit concerning.
“And by the way, Skully, does the name Ragnarr ring any bells?” Luke suddenly asked, Skully could feel Luke’s menacing glare.
“Ragnarr?” Skully mumbled, for a moment he felt something stir inside him.
“I don't think so… should it ring any bells?” Skully grunted. Luke just shrugged and continued cutting various fruits.
“Ugh, I hope Ellie comes back fudging soon.” Skully whispered to himself. Luke glanced at him.
Ellie dipped her finger into the river, it felt cool, she ran her fingers through the water, gazing into it. She felt mesmerised by the way it moved, it reminded her of the small creeks of the woods. She pulled her hand out, water dripped off it. She glanced into the river as the water settled down again. She saw her reflection in the glittering water, she looked like a stranger. The reflection reached out its hand towards Ellie, beckoning her to take it. Ellie fell back on the grass, she stumbled to her feet and ran off, all the way back to the apartment complex. She let out a sigh as she entered the lift. She glanced into the mirror in the lift and saw the same reflection, reaching out its hand still. Ellie stopped herself from screaming. She wondered if she should investigate this instead? Ellie started observing the reflection, she was going to open her mouth to speak, when the lift reached her floor. Ellie breathed out and walked hurriedly towards the apartment, her eyes shifting from side to side along the corridor.
“You’re back! I’ve never felt this fudging relieved in my life.” She heard Skully announcing as she entered the apartment. She smiled as she saw both Skully and Luke sitting on the sofa watching tv.
“I guess you’ve been having fun.” She beamed at Skully.
“Fun? You try spending a day with this fudging guy.” Skully groaned. Ellie laughed, she thought it seemed like they were both enjoying themselves. She fell back on the sofa.
“I am beat. And really hungry, I lost the bread I was supposed to eat for breakfast.” Ellie sighed, leaning back.
Luke glanced at her. “I can make you something. How about a sandwich?” He asked her, placing the remote down in front of Skully.
“That sounds great, but you don’t have to, I can make it myself…” She remarked, Luke had already gone to the kitchen.
Ellie followed, she placed herself on the metal stool on the other side of the kitchen counter.
“Don’t worry about it. Skully told me about your new job.” Luke mentioned as he sliced the bread for her.
“I just have one question, are you out of your mind? Do you know how dangerous Juliette Valentine is? She is a loaded gun, who happens to run an underground criminal organisation as well.” Luke cautioned Ellie, his voice sounded cold and distant.
“I didn’t know this… I’m just hunting for clues. For Skully, and she gave me a lot of clues today.” Ellie muttered, staring down at the counter.
“What about you? Your own safety? Do you not care about that? What happens to Skully if you end up dead?” Luke asked her, his voice softened slightly, and his tone intensified.
“I haven’t really thought about all that… It's an adventure, it’s not meant to be safe. If I think about being safe I will just end up like my dad, not doing much of anything with my life. At least like this I can say I lived a full life. Besides, helping Skully is important to me, he’s been my friend for almost ten years now…” Ellie exclaimed, she stared straight at Luke. He stared back at her.
“Don’t waste your precious life on an old grumpy vampire.” Luke told her, his eyes unwavering, his expression unchanged.
Ellie felt something inside, did he actually care about her? Her cheeks turned a deep shade of pink, she wanted to look away, at the same time she didn’t want to look away. Her breathing became heavier, she swallowed hard.
“What the fudge are those guys doing over there? And did someone call me old?” Skully grumbled to himself before he went back to watching tv.
Luke placed a toasted ham and cheese sandwich on a plate in front of Ellie.
“I’m sorry, to me he’s not an old grumpy vampire, to me he’s my best friend.” Ellie proclaimed, smiling warmly. Luke sighed and leaned forward on the counter. His fingers gently caressed hers, he glanced up at her, when abruptly the front door slammed open with a loud bang.
