There was a slight breeze outside, chilling the air. The leaves were beginning to change colors. Oscar sat at a table, clad in a sweatshirt and jeans. The table was shielded from the wind, but Oscar still held his hands in his pockets to keep them warm.
Jade came out of the building, holding two cups of coffee in her hands. She set one down in front of Oscar, then took her seat across from him, sipping her coffee.
“Thank you, Jade!” Oscar grinned, drinking from his coffee, trying to avoid burning his tongue.
“You’re welcome!” Jade replied.
The two quietly enjoyed their coffee, but Oscar felt his heart racing. He wanted to tell Jade the exciting news he had, but he didn’t want to speak too soon and ruin it.
“Oscar?” Jade’s soft voice cut through his thoughts. A small smile sat on her face. “You look like you have something you want to tell me.”
Oscar felt his cheeks burn with a blush. “O-oh, so it’s obvious?” He whimpered, embarrassed.
Jade giggled. “Kind of, yeah. What is it?”
Oscar took a deep breath. He wanted to spit everything out at once, but he knew he would be incoherent with his excitement. He forced himself to slow down.
“I got a girl’s number,” Oscar said, trying to keep his voice from shaking with anticipation.
Jade’s eyes grew wide as she took another sip of her steaming coffee. “Really? Who? Where? How?”
Oscar laughed and explained the entire meeting with Jade, slightly tripping over his words. He knew he was talking fast, but he just couldn’t help himself.
“Have you texted her yet?” Jade asked once he completed his story. Oscar shook his head.
“N-no…” he frowned. “I’m really nervous…”
Jade nodded her head in agreement. “Yeah, that does sound nerve racking.” Jade replied. She tapped her coffee cup, a small smile on her face. “But I think you should do it!”
Oscar sighed heavily. He knew he needed to, but his nerves were keeping him from doing so.
Jade leaned forward. “Do it now, Oscar!” She cheered softly.
Oscar felt a small boost of confidence at his friend’s support. He pulled out his phone, the cold air chilling his fingers, but he typed in Leona’s name in his contacts, ready to type a message.
He froze.
“My god, Jade, but what do I say?” He asked, shaking from anxiety. “How did Sagiv ask you out? What did he say to you?”
Jade giggled, her freckled cheeks burning red. “Oh my, he was so awkward! But keep in mind, this was freshman year of high school.” She thought back to the memory, her green eyes sparkling with fondness. “He told me he really liked me, and that he wanted to spend time with me, and if I wanted to be his girlfriend.” Her blush grew deeper.
Oscar slumped his shoulders. “That’s right. He knew you for a while before he asked you out.” He whined, resting his head on the table. “This is hard!”
Jade patted his shoulder. “Then Just be casual!” Jade told him. “Maybe ask if she wants to get some food or something?”
Oscar flickered her eyes up to Jade. He lifted his head, holding his phone in his hand. “A-alright…” he murmured. He began to type.
“Hey Leona, this is Oscar. Was wondering if you’d be down to grab a bite to eat with me this Saturday night?”
He sent the message.
Now he played the waiting game.
Jade finished her coffee, smiling sweetly at Oscar. He looked back at her, sighing heavily.
He felt his phone vibrate. Immediately he picked it up, his eyes scanning over the text message he received.
“Hey Oscar! I’d love to join you!”
Oscar’s heart skipped a beat. His hot breath was visible in the frigid air.
Jade frowned, concerned at the expression on his face. “Oh no. Did she turn you down?”
Oscar sat silently for a moment, not able to respond. He was in so much shock.
“She...” he breathed, his eyes stuck on the text message. “She said yes!”
Jade’s eyes lit up with joy. “Oh my goodness! I’m so happy for you, Oscar!”
Oscar so badly wanted to jump to his feet and dance around the table with glee, but he kept his quiet composure, clearing his throat. He read the text message over again, then noticed the time.
“Ah! I better get going. Class is starting soon!” He said, getting out of the chair. Jade stood up too, giving Oscar a friendly hug. He laughed and hugged her back. “See you, Jade.”
“Bye Oscar. If I don’t see you by then, let me know how your date goes.” She grinned.
Oscar thanked her, his heart warmed knowing he had such a great friend in Jade. Even so, he was extremely excited for his date, and he went to class, Leona all he could think about.
