Two Worlds

Chapter 18

Chapter 18

Dec 14, 2022

Okay, the movie's over, friends are gone, and I'm sitting in Caleb's truck. Throughout the film, Caleb sat there with no reaction, and once the movie was over, he sat there watching me say bye to Tia and Mason. So he packed up the back in silence, got in the car with me, and sat there for ten minutes.

"So, did you like the movie?" I said, breaking the silence. Caleb sighed, leaning forward and pressings his forehead on the steering wheel, glancing over at me.

"Do you have to be home anytime soon?" Caleb asked.

"Uh, no," I said.

"Okay, do you mind going on an adventure with me?" Caleb asked.

"Sure," I said, and Caleb smiled and leaned back, putting the car in drive, and we left the parking lot.

We drove for about 20 minutes, and he didn't say anything to me the whole time. The farther we were getting from people, the more I was starting to think that this was like one of those dateline episodes. I became convinced that he would murder me when he turned into a dirt pathway stopping at a clearing. So he put the car in park, and I looked at him, and he turned to me, unbuckling his seatbelt.

"Come on, it is up ahead," he said and got out of the car. Oh god, I hope I am wrong. I unbuckled my seat belt, got out of the truck, and started following Steven through the woods. We walked for about five minutes, and we walked to an opening. I gasped, looking at a large lake surrounded by trees. Caleb walked over to a bunch of rocks lined up next to the lake and climbed onto them. He looked at me, and I climbed up the rocks and sat next to him.

"What is this place?" I asked, looking at the moon's reflection on the lake.

"Well, this is my safe haven," Caleb said.

"So, like my music room?" I said, looking back at him, and he nodded.

"Yeah, I come here when I need to clear my head," Caleb said.

"This place is so nice. How did you find this place?" I asked.

"Actually, my mom showed me this place. This was her safe haven before she met my dad. She showed me this place when she noticed that the pressures of school, football, and life were getting to me. She told me I should go here whenever I needed to get away," Caleb said.

"So why are you showing me this place? I appreciate that you brought me to a place like this. Still, it seems too special that I don't think you would like advertising this place, let alone showing it to someone like me," I said, and Caleb smiled.

"Well, I wanted to show it to you because you are special to me," Caleb said. I steadied myself on the rock because I fell off cause of shock. I was special to Caleb. That is probably not the case, right?

"You probably say that to all the girls," I said, and Caleb shrugged and leaned back on the rock, resting his hand behind his head.

"I mean, you are wrong about two things," Caleb said.

"Oh, really, and what is that?" I asked.

"Well, one, you are a guy. And two, I don't rely on lines like that if I want to get with someone," Caleb said.

"Oh, really, and what works?" I asked, and Caleb sat up, cupping his face.

"This face does most of the talking," Caleb said, and I rolled my eyes.

"Yea, yea, pretty boy," I said.

"I am glad you think I am," Caleb said, and I started laughing, giving him a slight push.

"Thanks for taking me here," I said, and Caleb smiled.

"So, would your mom be okay with being out this late?" Caleb asked.

"Well, it would be fine. She thinks we are at Tia's house because she texted her saying that we were hanging out and you will be taking me home because Nina will be staying at Gwen's," I said.

"Wow, she thought of everything," Caleb said.

"Yea, if Nina didn't step in, then I wouldn't be going out tonight," I said.

"Is your mom that strict?" Caleb asked.

"Well, she was not always like that. Ever since my dad died, she was worried constantly, but after last summer-" I brought my legs to myself and rested my chin on my knees. "She is just over-protected," I said, looking out at the lake.

"You want to talk about it?" Caleb asked, and I looked over at him.

"Do you know what you want to do with your life?" I asked.

"Yeah," Caleb said.

"And what do you want to do?" I asked.

"Well, I want to keep pursuing football, but I do want mechanical engineering," Caleb said.

"Wow, and is that something that your family is okay with?" I said.

"Yea, they were mostly shocked that was the route I wanted to take, especially my dad. He was happy that I wanted to keep playing football. Still, he was shocked that I wanted to do mechanical engineering," Caleb said.

"Was he mad," I said.

"Actually, no, he was even more excited than he was for football," Caleb said.

"Wow," I said, looking back at the lake.

"What," Caleb said, and I looked back at him.

"I am amazed that your dad is happy about something you want to do. Meanwhile, my mom thinks I should pursue a real career and forget about music because it is a waste of time in her eyes," I said.

'Wow, have you talked to her about this?" Caleb asked, and I shook my head.

"No, my mom is very stubborn, and she doesn't want to listen when I talk about me pursuing music," I said.

"I'm sorry, Steven," Caleb said.

"Well, at least she is not doing anything about my love life, but that is subject to change," I said.

"What do you mean?" Caleb asked.

"Well, she thinks that something is going on between us, and she thinks I shouldn't be dating anyone," I said.

"But what do you want?" Caleb asked.

"Well, I didn't really think about it, considering that there are not a lot of gay guys who are open about their relationship with me," I said, sighing.

"Well, if you were given an opportunity, would you do it?" Caleb asked.

"You know I have been burned before, but me being the hopeless romantic that I am. I do hope that I can find true love. I know that sounds stupid, but what can I say? I am a sucker when it comes to love," I said, and Caleb placed his hand on top of mine.

"It is not stupid," Caleb said, and I looked into his gray eyes, and my heart was thumping in my chest. I thought that I was going to die. For a second, I thought that Caleb was actually into me, but that was only for a second because I knew that he was feeling bad for me.

"Well, sorry for getting emotional on you. Are you hungry? Because I am starving," I said, pulling my hand from under his, and Caleb frowned.

"So you don't feel anything?" Caleb asked.

"I'm sorry. What do you mean?" I asked.

"Nothing. Come on, let's get food," Caleb said, and he hopped off the rock and helped me down.

Caleb started walking toward the entrance of the clearing, and I bit my lip. I knew that if I didn't say anything, I wouldn't get the chance again, so my body moved before my brain could stop me. So I grabbed the back of Caleb's jacket, and he stopped and looked back at me, surprised and confused, mostly confused. I released his coat and took a deep breath looking into his eyes.

"What are your feeling towards me?" I asked, looking at Caleb, trying to get a read on his face.

Caleb slowly walked up to me, and before I could react, Caleb's lips were pressed up against mine.
