Moving In

Moving In

Dec 24, 2022

I followed Riley into her house carrying a box of my stuff.

“We have two guest rooms thankfully. So you both will get your own room,” Riley said.

“Awesome,” Chase said, walking in front of me carrying a box of his stuff.

Adrien walked beside carrying another box of my stuff. Jackson walked behind us carrying a box of Chase’s stuff.

“Here’s your room, Chase,” Riley said, leading Chase into a room with a single red wall. “I hope you like it.”

“It’s great. Thanks,” Chase said, walking into the room with Jackson behind him.

“You’re welcome,” Riley said. She then turned to keep walking and led Adrien and me into a room with a single blue wall.

There was a large bed with blue sheets and white nightstand near the window with a huge open space and a dresser on the opposite side of the bed. Next to the dresser, stood a white vanity table with a mirror and white cushioned seat with a back.

“This looks wonderful,” I said with a smile, looking around the room. “Thank you so much, Riley.”
“You’re welcome. I’ll let you get situated,” Riley said with a smile. She then turned and left the room, leaving Adrien and I alone.

“Wow,” Adrien said, setting down the box he was holding on the ground. “It looks so cozy in here.”

“Yes it does,” I said, setting my box that I was holding on top of the one Adrien set on the ground.

Adrien and I then sat down on the bed.

“Adrien, there’s something I needed to talk to you about,” I said, turning to face him.

“Ok,” Adrien said with a nod. “Shoot.”

“I was just wanting to clear up what’s happening between us. Are we dating? Are we girlfriend and boyfriend? Are we just friends who like kissing each other?”

Adrien stared at me blankly for a moment. He then opened his mouth and spoke.

“I’m not really ready for a relationship yet,” Adrien said, twiddling his thumbs. “I hope that's ok.”

“It’s totally fine,” I lied.

“You sure?” Adrien asked, not believing me.

“Yes,” I lied again.

Adrien stared at me for a moment and then changed the subject.

“So what now?” Adrien asked. “Do we unpack more? Do we watch a movie?”
I laughed.

“We go bring in more boxes,” I said.

A little while later, Adrien left. Leaving me to unpack everything in my new room and organize things how I would like to.

I began to unbox a box of books when I heard an unfamiliar voice coming from Chase’s room. I stopped unpacking and walked out of my room towards Chase’s room. I knocked on the open door and then entered.

“Hey,” I said, looking at the other guy in the room that I had never seen before.

The guy had straight shaggy black hair with beautiful hazel eyes. He wore a gray v-neck shirt that showed off his muscles on his chest with blue jeans.

“Hi, Dahlia,” Chase said with a smile. His cheeks are light pink as if he was blushing. “This is my boyfriend, Leo. Leo, this is my littlest sister, Dahlia.” Chase gestured from Leo to me.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” I said with a smile.

“It’s nice to finally meet you,” Leo said at the same time I started talking, with a smile.

We both then laughed.

“You too,” We said in unison with smiles on our faces.

“So you’re the famous Leo, I’ve heard so much about,” I said with a smile.

“And you’re the famous Dahlia, I’ve heard so much about,” Leo said with a smile. “Chase has told me a lot about you.” Leo then winked. “Don’t worry, it’s all good things.”

“Good,” I said. “Don’t worry either, he says all good things about you too.”

“Anyway,” Chase said. “Leo and I were just about to order pizza. What kind do you want?”

“Hawaiian,” I answered.

“Hawaiian?” Leo repeated. “So you're one of the cool people.”
I laughed.

“I like Hawaiian too. Chase teases me about it all the time,” Leo said with a huge smile.

Chase’s blush deepened.

“Same,” I said. “He always tells me that…”

“Fruit goes on the side, not on pizza,” Leo and I said in unison.

Leo and I then burst out laughing.

“Ok. Ok. Now, stop trying to steal my boyfriend. Go invite yours over. Or call him,” Chase said, getting jealous of how much Leo and I were bonding.

“Actually…,” I started. “He’s not my boyfriend.”

“Then what are you guys then? Friends that makeout?” Chase asked, confused.

“Pretty much,” I said, looking down at the floor. “He said he’s not ready for a relationship.”
“Seems to me like he’s playing with your feelings,” Chase said.

I then looked him in the eyes.

“He told me he liked me…,” I said, suddenly more confused about Adrien and my relationship.

“Sounds to me like he’s leading you on,” Leo interrupted. “But then again I don’t know who this guy is.”

“Leo’s right. It does seem like he’s leading you on. You should confront him about it,” Chase said. “Or at least tell him to stop kissing you unless you’re gonna be more than that. If you know what I mean.”

I nodded in agreement.

“I guess I do need to talk to him,” I mumbled to myself as Leo and Chase turned to each other and started talking amongst themselves.

Do you ever feel like you don’t belong? Like no matter how hard you try, you’ll never fit in? Well, I do. Hi, my name is Dahlia Elyse Yates. Yes, the Yates. I’m in what most people call the “Perfect Family.”
My family is embarrassed of me. Why? Because I have heterochromia, which makes my eyes two different colors, and vitiligo, which makes my tan skin lose pigment in different places. My family finds it “not normal” or “unnatural.” They mostly call me things like "freak" and "weirdo."
And this is my story about how I learn to accept myself for who I am, against all odds.
