It was her first day back to school, 8:30. And the day already sucked. Her head had been swimming all morning and it only seemed to get worse. It felt like someone had put an ocean in her head and shook it real good. The waves kept hitting the walls of her mind and it hurt like hell. "Jasmine, you okay?" Mrs. Barrymore asks mid-speech about some historical moment. Don't ask Jasmine she wouldn't know, about which historical moment she was talking about and how she was doing. She didn't know much about what was going on in her head let alone what was going on around her. "Yeah...Can I go to the nurse, please? I have a headache."
"Yes, of course. Let me write you a hall pass." Mrs. Barrymore says rushing to her desk to go through her draws as Jasmine stood and grabbed her bag. It took Mrs. Barrymore a few minutes to find the pieces of paper the principal had given her at the beginning of the semester, but while she was looking Jasmine made her way to the front of the class throwing her backpack over her shoulder and immediately gets thrown into the thrashing seas she calls her mind. Most often called zoning out or having your head in the clouds, Jasmine likes to call it drowning. The feeling feels more like floating in a pool except that pool is an ocean and you're not floating your drowning. You're not thinking of much just enjoying the numb feeling of pain until someone comes along and pulls you from the frozen ocean you call home. "Ms. Black? Are you okay?" Mrs. Barrymore asks holding a piece of paper out for Jasmine to take.
"Yeah, zoned out. Sorry," Jasmine smiles, gently taking the piece of paper before glancing out at the classroom. All eyes are on her, "Oh, great." Sitting in the first row, front and center, Tyler Anderson. Taylor's brother. "He's for sure going to tattle on me."
The girl every boy wanted and every girl wanted to be only wanted the one person in the entire school who didn't want her or to be her, the quiet kid who just wants to be left alone so the day can go by without there being a total disaster like catching the attention of the whole student body because the head cheerleader likes her.
