Jasmine
IX
After directing Cairo’s dumbass away, I look down. Slowly, I begin tiptoeing around the rest of the snakes. Thank god that worked. I had some doubts, considering his stupidity, and resistance to following directions, but he listened this time. For...whatever reason.
Now, all I need is for Zaro and the rest of the city fighters chasing us to... you’ll see.
After reaching the edge of the snake-filled ditch, I look back, and see Zaro and some other city fighters barreling towards me. The time is almost right.

Once they reach the snake pit, I run out of it, and purposely step on the tail of the snake nearest to me on the way out. This causes it to wake, which sets the others off in a domino effect of sorts.
Zaro and the guards are not going to have a fun time with that...
With the sounds of screaming men behind me, I dart to the small opening in the trees, and run over to the useless companion I now have.
Goddamit. He’s knocked out again. I mean how much of a coward do you have to be?!
“Cairo.”
“Cairo.”
“CAIRO!”
No matter how loud I scream his name, or shake him, he isn’t waking up. What? He usually wakes up after the first slap or two.
At least I don’t have to worry about the guards... right?
Wrong. Just at the moment when I think that, I see Zaro and his team, now reduced to only two other guards, slashing snakes off of their bodies and slowly approaching.
“You’ll pay for this!” he growls.
Oh god.

I wake up, looking at the back of Jasmine’s head. It seems like she’s looking at someone.
“Oh no oh no...” she exclaims.
Suddenly, my head starts pounding. What happened...?
Oh right. I ran away, reached the opening then... fainted. Goddamit Ro. Again?!
Come on.
Anyway, Jasmine looks back at me finally, and her eyes widen in surprise, then narrow in anger and disappointment.
“Now? Now’s when you wake up? Great timing, waking up now, when Zaro and his team are already past the snake trap.”
Goddamit.
“What?!” I jolt up, surprised at this new information. “So they didn’t stop at the snake ditch thingy?”
“What do you think?!” She grabs me by my hair, forcing me to sit up and look in Zaro’s direction.
I slap her hand away. “Hey, not the hair.”
“Now’s NOT the time! What do we do, what do we do...?!” She looks around in a frantic panic.
“I don’t know! Come on, you always have a plan!”
She begins biting her nail nervously. “Well, we are partially hidden here, but they can still see us from the right angle. Plus, they know the general area that we’re in; they saw, and probably heard your clumsy ass running.”
I mean... she is right. I am kind of clumsy. Maybe just a little.
Okay, a lot.
She slaps me, knocking me away from my thoughts.
“Did you hear me?! I said we need to hide again- in a better spot!
“Ok, ok, noted. Sooo... where?”
She points my head in the direction of some dense trees, about a few meters behind us.
“There.”
“Gotcha.”
“On the count of three?”
“On the count of three.”
“One,”
“Two,”
“THREE!” We scream in unison, running towards the trees. Just as Zaro’s head pops up from behind our previous hiding spot, we reach the foliage, and dash behind it, now perfectly hidden.
Mission accomplished.
