“We still need to be wary of this one.” Iola pulsed to Nesmir. “He could well be feigning his dejection.”

“Aye, he might.” Nesmir pulsed back. “Yet no man has ever broken free of my skilful knots.”

“Ah, you did mention that your people were able seafarers.” Iola relaxed her mind and undid the last of their food packages from the Siduscan palace kitchens.

“Yes, and many a year did I sail the emerald seas, since the time I was a meagre lad.” Nesmir smiled and sat down across her. “The past matters not now, we have the future to concern with.”

“What concerns you, Nesmir?” Iola looked up at the young guardsman.

“How will the people of your homeland react to us bringing Esamus to them?”

“My people will rejoice.” Iola ran her slender fingers through her long dark tresses. “Chief Torus will take pleasure in executing him, before the entire clan. Esamus will pay for the years of abuse on our people... and for the torture and death of Haas Starlight.”

“Yes, justice must be served.” Nesmir looked pensively at the cold meatloaf and bread he held in his large hands.

“Yes, so it has to.” Iola studied his brooding face. “But I sense that there is even more that troubles you.”
