Ha-neul and Hye-jin wave at Na-ra and Yeong-su goodbye as they exit the room. Yeong-su sits like a statue, his legs folded up to the level of his chest, his arms resting over his knees, his eyes still downcast towards the ground. Ha-neul and Hye-jin are escorted back to the garage door where they stand next to the brutish man and the man with the glasses to await the would-be buyers.

The man with the glasses positions Ha-neul right in the middle and tells her to show a slight smile. "Don't show your teeth," he says to Ha-neul, "It'll look weird. Be flirty, okay?"

It's not hard for Ha-neul to put on this fake smile. In her heart, she knows their deliverance is at hand, so perhaps it isn't completely fake.

It's not long when a car pulls up to the warehouse. The wealthy couple then gets out of the car. The man is quite tall, wearing a suit. The lady looks snobbish. The man with the glasses addresses them in what sounds like Chinese. Ha-neul cannot make out what they are saying, but can guess based off of the couple's reactions. When the man with the glasses motions at Ha-neul, she can see that the wife's expression turns into one of annoyance. It appears the wife wants to take Hye-jin only, as she is pointing at her incessantly. But the husband looks determined as he eyes Ha-neul from the bottom up and argues with his wife.

The charade ends as the husband hands the man with the glasses a handful of cash. The brutish man manhandles Ha-neul and Hye-jin, grabbing them by the shoulder and escorting them out of the garage towards the couple's car. Instead of putting them in the back seat though, he opens the trunk and practically tosses Ha-neul and Hye-jin in, slamming the trunk shut. Ha-neul's heart sinks again, as it seems like their plan has been ruined.

Just then they hear the husband speaking in a harsh tone, most likely at the brutish man. After a minute of this, the trunk opens again, and the couple gives Ha-neul and Hye-jin a hand to leave the trunk and instead sit in the back seat of their car. The couple then enters the front seats and drives away from the warehouse. Ha-neul takes note of the direction they are headed, and remembers where they arrived from in the military truck to estimate the direction of the Chinese restaurant.

They drive on for five minutes before the husband finally says something from the driver's seat. "No escape," the husband tells them in broken Korean. "Deportation," he adds, "Deportation," repeating for emphasis. "I care for you," he adds, this time in a softer tone, repeating it again, "I care for you."

The wife suddenly argues with the husband. It turns from a heated argument to a shouting match as the wife starts to hit the husband on the head. He pulls off by the side of the road in order to block his wife's incessant blows. They shout in Chinese for a couple minutes before the husband finally seems to concede to his wife. He gets out from the driver's seat and opens the door for Ha-neul who was seated directly behind him. He tells her something in Chinese. Not understanding, Ha-neul sits motionless. The husband repeats it again, before finally grabbing Ha-neul to take her out of the car. Ha-neul realizes what's going on and uses her legs to stay in the car, as she knows the wife wants to get rid of her and keep Hye-jin.

The husband tries in vain to remove Ha-neul, as Ha-neul yells at Hye-jin to open the car door and run. Hesitating at first due to shock, Hye-jin finally springs into action and opens the car door on her side - as it is unlocked - and she runs onto the sidewalk and out towards an open square in a city block with buildings on three sides, disappearing into some bushes in between the buildings.

The wife yells something at the husband, and the husband leaves Ha-neul to run after Hye-jin. Ha-neul seizes the moment and runs out of the car, running towards another building across the square and hiding in some bushes there. She can see the husband searching around in vain, as some surprised bystanders watch the bizarre scene. The husband notices he is attracting attention and starts to retreat towards his car. When it looks like someone is calling the police on their cell phone, the husband finally enters into his car and speedily drives away.

Ha-neul hopes Hye-jin is smart enough to stay hidden until the people leave. She is, and after about ten minutes, Ha-neul finally leaves her hiding spot and crosses the square to look for Hye-jin. She cannot see her, so instead calls out her name. "Hye-jina!" she says in a loud whisper. "Hye-jina!"

Hye-jin finally emerges from one of the brambles, her arms scratched and with some blood. Ha-neul takes Hye-jin on her back and sprints towards the main street. She knows the direction they came from and proceeds to walk in that direction. The street has mostly concrete buildings on either side with the occasional alley here and there. Whenever too many suspicious people are about, Ha-neul darts into an alley with Hye-jin on her back and they disappear momentarily, before returning to the street to make their way back in the direction of the Chinese restaurant. The city seemed to be built according to a uniform plan, as most of the buildings all looked the same: gray, lifeless, concrete buildings.

The journey is quite long. Ha-neul takes several breaks with Hye-jin as they walk south through the town back in the general direction of the Chinese restaurant. They should have passed the warehouse by now, she thought, but they were now traveling along an unfamiliar road. She recalls it took them about half an hour to drive from the restaurant to the warehouse. At the rate they are walking, and with the possibility they may be lost, she worries they won't make it back before nightfall.

They proceed down the road for hours. Ha-neul starts to panic. Despite heading south, the streets all look the same and she's not sure if the road they are taking will lead them back to the restaurant. Tired and hungry, with Hye-jin exhausted and asleep on her back, Ha-neul begins to lose heart. Their chances to return in time seem slim at best. She starts to blame herself with each step, second-guessing her every decision. Her eyes tear up, until her breathing becomes broken and finally bursts into crying. Her pace decreases along with her self-esteem, her legs buckling under the weight of her feelings of incompetence. She finally stops, thinking to herself that she cannot do this.

Just then, down the alley to her left, she sees there is an open air market full of people. She sucks up her tears and walks down the alley with Hye-jin still on her back. At the end of the alley is another street full of vendors on both sides selling their wares: fish, oranges, spices, onions, cabbage, vegetables of all kinds, even hot food like roasted chestnuts, grilled chicken feet, and fresh bao piled up on tables.

She walks over to an old man roasting chestnuts. By now, Hye-jin is awakened by the aroma. The kids stare at the chestnuts piled on the table, the sight alone enough to fill their bellies. After their eyes have their fill, Ha-neul turns to walk down the street through the market. Just then, the old man calls after them. He's waving his hand down towards himself, motioning them to come over. He places several roasted chestnuts into a paper bag and offers them to Ha-neul.

Ha-neul bows a couple times as she tries to back away, but the old man says something in Chinese and extends his arm, nodding as if giving it to Ha-neul. Ha-neul motions with one hand as if to say she has no money, the other hand holding Hye-jin's leg as Hye-jin stares over Ha-neul's shoulder at the tantalizing bag of steaming hot chestnuts.

The old man finally walks around the table in his stall and hands it directly to Ha-neul, then walks back behind the table, waving them away while saying something in Chinese, smiling.

Ha-neul walks over to an empty part of the street and she and Hye-jin sit on the sidewalk, sharing the chestnuts for a few minutes. The hot food lifts their spirits. They both walk down the street of the open air market, almost skipping as they happily enjoy the early autumn afternoon.

They walk on with renewed confidence. Ha-neul notices the sun starting to go down more quickly, but somehow she feels that they are going to reach their destination before it fully disappears. After some time, they finally come across a familiar looking road. Sure enough, it's the road that led back to the warehouse. They walk more briskly now. It is perhaps five or six hours since they started their way back. It feels like an entire lifetime to Ha-neul.

As the sun sets behind the countless concrete buildings, the Chinese restaurant they first stopped at when they arrived at the town comes into view. And there, leaning his back against a solitary streetlight pole is Yeong-su, his arms folded, his head hanging towards the ground, the light bulb already turned on as the rest of the street has darkened.

"Oppa!" Ha-neul exclaims as she runs over to him, Hye-jin running close behind.

Yeong-su lifts his gaze and makes eye contact with Ha-neul for the first time, his tired, brown eyes finally visible. His expression is muted as he stops leaning on the pole and stands up straight to patiently await them. Just then, Ha-neul startles him as she runs up and places her arms around his body for a hug. Hye-jin follows up and hugs Yeong-su's leg.

Yeong-su freezes, his eyes doubling in size out of complete surprise, his arms stuck up awkwardly in the air, his body leaning backwards uncomfortably as he recoils away from this sudden outburst of affection.

Ha-neul is a beautiful, kindhearted sixteen-year-old teenager living in North Korea with her rambunctious sister and her loving parents. Threatened by an ambitious school administrator, they are forced to flee the country and search for happiness elsewhere.

Once out of North Korea, they meet Yeong-su, a mysterious teenager whom Ha-neul is immediately attracted to. Together they look for a way to sneak into South Korea and a better life. Will they survive? Will freedom automatically bring happiness? Can you really escape from your past life, or will it catch up to you in the end? Ha-neul seeks to answer these questions as she starts her second life.

This novel has a more serious tone and is not too long, about 78k words, with a lot of life lessons poured into it and a redemptive ending. May it help those who feel discouraged.
