The Paladin's Path

A Fateful Encounter Part 1

A Fateful Encounter Part 1

Jan 01, 2023

I am currently running through a forest. I'm trying to catch some insects that I can show to my dad. He always encouraged me to run through it while searching. However, I do not know why. Anyway, I live my small hometown called Silvertree. My father owns a small farm on the edge of the town. My mother is currently expecting my fifth sister or brother, which is why I am helping my father more in the field than before.

It's hard work to dig up the earth with him and feed the animals, but I do It without complaining much. As a reward, I get to learn to read with my mother. Oh man, I wonder if she can teach me about magic like in the stories she tells. I heard from her that you can do stuff like throw balls made of fire if you are good at it.

HOW AWESOME WOULD THAT BE! I could be a mage someday and go on an adventure with other like-minded people! I keep fantasizing about It when I suddenly feel a sharp pain in my nose and hear a big WHAM as I crash into a tree.

I lie on the ground, as I feel a warmth rush into my nose. I instinctively put my hand on the nose and squeeze hard. I don't want my mother to worry again. I stay there for a few minutes cursing at the tree before me.

“Stupid big tree. Terrified of the prodigy that I would become as a magic student ha? Wanted to stop me early before I become the menace to bad people and the hero that protects the people?” I raise a fist to the tree and start to giggle to myself.

“I hope I didn't hurt you.” I start to pat the tree and then I stand up when I suddenly hear a horse cry out in the distance.

Oh crap, did I get into the vicinity of the road? Father will be angry If he finds out.

I started to make my way back pretty quickly when I heard a shout from the same direction.

“ QUICK GRAB YOUR WEAPONS! GOBLIN AMBUSH! PROTECT THE KNIGHT COMMANDER!”

I turned around and thought to myself.

“ Are these people in trouble? Maybe I can help them!"

That's where I just stopped thinking and I grabbed a thick branch next to me and I set out to defend these people. I feel my heart pumping like never before and excitement fills my mind again but this time I dodge every vile tree in my path. Thats when I arrived at clearing and could see the road. I immediatly got sick of the iron smell in the air.

I looked around to see five horse bound wagons below me that were stopped in the middle of the road. They were flanked by heavily armored people wearing weapons and shields. Most of them had a symbol on the shields. It was a huge scale with a hand holding It. A bunch of them were already lying on the floor with a big puddle of red under them. I felt how the food I ate earlier tried to escape my stomach. But my attention was immediately grabbed by the biggest person in this shield wall.He was atleast 3 heads bigger than the man besides him and he wore a big mace. On his breastplate was a big platinum dragon head painted. A booming voice resounded in my head.

" DID ANYBODY SPOT THEM ALREADY? BRACE FOR THE NEXT VOLLEY!"

I hear next to me a bush rustle. I see a small green thing with long ears next to me. It wears a leather armor made of wolf hide. It pulls out a crude arrow from Its quiver and prepares to shoot with Its shortbow. It didnt seem to notice me yet. My mother teached me a bit about these creatures. They were called goblins and they arent known to be in this area. She only told me that most of them are mean creatures but I wouldnt need to worry about them because the knights army of Tyrael pretty much eradicated them from this region. Apparently this wasn't true

I just watched on as It let the arrow fly into the group of knights. I never heard so many arrows shot at once. It was too many to count. Most of them only hit the armor the knights but one poor guy got hit in the throat. I looked in disbelief as the knight fell to the ground I just couldnt stop myself from quivering.

The goblin prepared to move to another hiding spot. Thats where I felt my heart pump again with excitement and something overcame me. I grabbed my branch and whacked the goblin as hard as I could on the head. The branch cracked intwo and a loud yelp came from the goblin throwing him to the floor not moving.

I was celebrating my one hit k.o when the big knight screamed.

" Don't there is a child up there!"

I get up to wave to him. Thats when I noticed that the goblin is still moving. He was quite angry but not for long because both him and me were suddenly ingulfed by big explosion of flame.
