The Paladin's Path

A Fateful Encounter Part 2

A Fateful Encounter Part 2

Jan 02, 2023

It was over too fast. I couldnt react in time to disrupt the spell cast by Durxel.
My eyes follow the childs trajectory. His body leaves a smoke trail behind him. Trying to reach him I immediately break formation and put everything into my legs to jump. I start to chant a prayer.

"Oh mighty Bahamut grant me this blessing to catch this child."

A golden aura emanates from my body granting me the speed that I need to atleast save him from the fall.
When I jumped the mud beneath me made me almost slip but I twist my feet in the right moment I take off.
With the blessing of the platinum dragon I reach out for  the child. I grab him by his feet and pull him to me
simultaneously I brace for impact with my back.

Theres a loud crack coming from my rips when I land. The child seems fine atleast. He is still breathing.
I take a sigh of relieve. Checking the body of the child I notice that he already got small muscle definitions.
So I can pretty much rule out that he is some child of noble blood. They arent typically worked that hard yet in their life and this child cant be older than 10.

My eyes narrow when I look over his wounds. Yeah thats pretty bad you can almost see his bones. I hear footsteps rapidly coming near me. A timid and scared voice rings out.

"Crap... Is he still alive?"

I look up to see Durxel the mage of our troop. He has a pretty long figure and is quite thin. You can see his cheekbones clearly sticking out too much. He is bald and wears a long wooden staff and is currently clothed in thick brown garments made of hide.

"Sorry Trystane I couldnt react in time."

Durxel face contorts into a depressing look.

"It's fine Durxel. It was my fault really. I shouldnt have given the go ahead for such a spell in this situation. And the boy is still alive. So get your damn head up and help me with him. I will start to heal him my magic but these burns wont heal from that alone. So please get me some bandages and the healing tincture from Zora"
Without another word Durxel makes his way to one of the wagons as quick as he can.

Atleast the plan somewhat worked the goblins retreated after they saw what we can do. There isnt any fighting going on anymore and our people started to put the fire out caused by Durxel.
I put my hands on the back of the boy and start channeling my healing powers granted by Bahamut. Most of the burns start to heal. The burns almost seem to stitch back together before a new layer of skin forms over It.
The boy now seems to breathe more calmly than before.
After another sigh I take of my helmet to cool down a bit myself. My back still hurts so that means I probably broke a rib or two. Worth It!
Thats when I suddenly hear the boy start to speak.

" Are the goblins still here?"

" No they are not. They ran away."

"Heh ouch laughing hurts. So you could say I saved you all?"

I cant stop myself to laugh pretty hard.

" You wanted to protect us? Thats why you tried to wave to us? To makes us feel save?"

I start to pat the boys head

"Good job I guess you saved us. Whats your name boy?"

"Thorry is my name"

" No surname?"

"Most people call us Ackermann because we work the fields. We dont really have a surname thats something only rich and noble people have"
The boy seems to forget his pain from the burns while we are speaking, I should engage him more.

"So Thorry then. My name is Sir Trystan. I am a temple knight of bahamut from the holy city of Tyrael. Its nice to make your acquaintance"

The boy turns around to face me. I notice the shock in his face but It fades pretty quickly into excitement as he sees what I am.

" I never seen somebody like you. What are you? You look pretty cool!"

I can't hide my smile from him. Most children cry when they see my face. What an interesting child.

"I am what they call a dragonkin."
