Five. That's how many cryogenic capsules were launched. All were volunteers; all adults; all willing to take a chance on being among the first to terraform Kepler 452b.
The plan worked. At least, part of it did. After all five capsules were separately launched into orbit, and the crew brought aboard and frozen, all five capsules were then connected together and sent on their way. The journey was estimated to take approximately 4,000 years.
But what no one expected...that everyone should have...was that Earth wasn't the only planet where somebody noticed Kepler 452b. In fact, twenty-three planets, besides Earth, had organized terraforming parties and had sent them.
And of course, the Earthlings were not the first to arrive. They were, however, the first to start broadcasting messages of culture, dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc., of everything known about Earth, as the Earthling spacecraft entered the system.
So, when "Kepler-1" entered orbit and the crew was automatically reawakened, they were shocked when they heard responses to their transmissions. Some Maverick at Stellarfleet had added a receiver to the ships transmitter, even though everything had been over budget from the beginning.
When Kepler-1 finally landed, the crew was amazed. They had expected to see a desolation, with minimal atmosphere. But instead, there was not only breathable air, but also edible plants, drinkable water, and a whole planet full of other sentient beings, welcoming the crew with open arms.
You see, before the Earthlings arrived, the whole group of species were unable to communicate with each other. Different planetary origins meant different languages, after all. And though they all were capable of creating and understanding noises, they all shared only one commonality: They were all terraforming engineers. They weren't linguists, and they knew nothing about how to figure out other languages. And none of them knew where or how to build a dictionary in their own languages, let alone how to compare one dictionary to another!
So when Kepler-1 entered the system and started transmitting a dictionary, along with pictures for each word, and building up from there, it ended up uniting all twenty-three alien races. Since the Earthling ship had done all the foundational work, everyone just went with it.
So, when the crew disembarked Kepler-1, they were shocked at what they saw; a crowd of tens of thousands. Various races from various planets; all living peacefully on Kepler, and all happy to meet the crew of the Kepler-1.
A collection of short stories I've written in response to Writing Prompts from various sources.
