Duke and Princess: The Value of the Power

Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Feb 07, 2023

He listened to her carefully, taking in every word as her tone raised as she stood up. The Duke felt his heart beating faster, and the urge to reach for a golden orb increased. Yet he sat there, not moving an inch, not allowing himself to show fear to hear. Even when she revealed her eyes that shined like diamonds, he was like a statue; however, inside, he wanted to stand up and distance himself from her. She made it clear that angering her is not wise. After she turned around, Duke calmed down before standing up and walking towards her; he stood in front of her, looking at the girl.

"You made yourself clear. I am glad we reached an understanding. Do you wish to ask me anything else before we part ways?"  He asked very politely to her.

"Do yo-you like fi-fishing, my lord?"

She questioned him as she looked into his eyes... Those eyes could reach almost everyone's heart and thoughts from this young Duke. He seemed an interesting person to her. Standing there in front of the tall and strong Duke made her feel tiny, yet it was rather funny... Someone like him is afraid of someone as fragile as her.

"I...I do not know. I never went fishing."
The girl had the talent to ask questions that surprised and even confused Richard. She made him think about things he had never thought about, which made him curious about her. "Why do you wish to know if I participated in such an activity?" It was his turn to ask her a question.

"Be-because I wo-would like to do so-some fishing... And al-also...my dad on-once said,"

She covered her eyes with the fabric as she reached with her hand the globe of the door, and before Aravis would dare to open the wooden door, said, "I-I wish I kn-knew how to fi-fish... It se-seems easier th-than killing pe-people" she held tight the globe and opened the door as a sarcastic smile appeared on her lips almost making her look like a completely different person "A-at least it se-seems easier th-than the hu-hunger of ki-killing him " she whispered those words as she stepped outside of the cabin of the Duke.
An eerie chill ran through Duke's spine as she spoke. He felt disturbed by her words and tried to understand if there was any meaning behind them or if he was overthinking it. Still, he gave her no comment on the matter and walked after her. It seemed she was getting more use to not having her eyes stitched. A maid stood up from her seat as the doors opened. She smiled and was ready to welcome her lord but was surprised to see the girl. Before she could bow to her, Richard stepped out of the room and stood behind the princess.

"This is princess Aravis. You will watch over her and provide whatever she asks for. You will share a chamber with her." He instructed the woman, who nodded and stepped to the young lady.

"Greetings, Princess. It's an honor to serve you."  The maid spoke cleanly with perfect diction and bowed to Aravis.
Aravis did not say anything. She just raised her hand to stop her from talking and placed her finger on her lips to show her that the sound of freedom, the waves...the birds...was way more important than the irritating voice of the maid. Surprised, the young maid stayed silent, but on the other hand, Richard did not appreciate that, but this time, he let that pass. Princess started to act boldly, which seemed a sudden change in behavior from the shy and modest lady. However, he did say he would respect her title as a Princess. He watched out for how things will go.
Aravis took a long deep breath and turned around to face the maid.

"I-I will on-only need to dr-dress me...th-that is all I ne-need from yo-you, nothing el-else. I pr-prefer to ma-make my br-breakfast. I do n-not trust an-anyone... Ea-eating the fo-food was simply o-out of my hu-hunger and st-stupidity. So i-if you ar-are kind en-enough, he-help me du-during my dr-dressing time. Th-that is a-all." She said as she was speaking out of the experience. She was poisoned way too many times, from both food and baths."As you wish, Princess." The maid said kindly. "Allow me to show you your chamber." The woman suggested pointing her palm toward the doors not far from Duke's room.
"Thank you .... Hmm, what is your name? "
She kindly asked as she stood beside the maid and faced her. Aravis knew all the staff names since she was a kid and did not like to call the staff by their title such as maid, chef etc. Aravis wanted to know their names. She felt like they were part of their family. She even knew the guards' names; she was only ten then.

"Lily, my Lady." The woman replied with a smile as she looked at the girl.

"I will be in my chamber if I will be needed. Rest well, Princess." Duke spoke softly and went inside his room, closing the doors behind him. Lily bowed to her lord before facing Aravis once more.

"Do you wish me to hold you while we walk?" The maid asked her as she noticed the blindfold, assuming the girl was blind.

"Th-there is no ne-need for that. I-I ain't bl-blind, just se-sensitive to the su-sunlight," Aravis spoke as kindly as possible since it was hard not to feel uncomfortable being assumed blinded. "Le-let's go to my ca-cabin... I re-really co-could use some re-rest," she added as she walked close to her and sigh.
"I see. My apologies. I did not mean to offend, Princes. Please, follow me."

Lily walked with Aravis to a very similar room to Duke's. It had a bed, desk, round table, dresser and wardrobe.  Everything was made of oak wood and had carved details of rose flowers. Even with the fabric on her eyes, Aravis could see how well-made the room was; it gave her the feeling of being treated as a princess. Taking a moment to enjoy this fresh feeling, she stepped inside, walking towards the bed. Her hand touched the mattress noticing that it was made of duck feathers and straws. Not so expensive materials, but it had been a long time since Aravis enjoyed such comfort.

The ship was at full speed, rocking in the waves of the sea and the young Duke in his room finally had a moment to think alone about the girl. It wouldn't be much of an issue if she had no powers, but she was gifted with god-like abilities. He had to tread carefully. She seemed prideful and ready to defend her honor, even prepared to kill for it. Nothing was wrong, but he questioned if she was mentally stable enough to be trusted. For now, he had to rely on the fact that she wanted to be good, for that is the impression he got from interaction with her. Feeling such pondering would not take him anywhere, Richard decided to indulge himself in paperwork and business planning. There was always a lot to do, and the boat would take two days to arrive at his hometown. Plenty of time to do some work. Hours passed, and before he noticed it was past eight post meridiem. The sky turned dark, and the stars shined brightly along with the moon.

Not all the fairy-tales starts with ' once upon a time...'. They do not start with a princess in her castle waiting for her knight on his shiny armor on the white horse. This story is different...
"It is both blessing and curse to feel everything so very deeply"
