Sakari had been awake since 6am, when Eji had come into his room and woken him up to make breakfast. Ivar had demanded eggs, toast, and bacon, so Sakari obliged. Ivar seemed to get everything he wanted, being doted upon by his older brother. That was almost the only thing he had learned in the 24 hours he had been there.
After cooking and cleaning, Sakari was told to simply wait in his
room until lunch. He was bored… So bored, in fact that he had come up with a
plan to gain Eji’s favour. He would cook him a private lunch. That was a great
idea, yes.
He stood up and went to the door, telling the bodyguards he was going to make lunch. Surprisingly enough, they let him pass with no issues or questions. That had to be a sign that what Sakari was doing was correct and good. Maybe if Eji was happy enough with the food, he would answer some questions.
Sakari made his way to the kitchen and looked in the fridge. He discovered that they had the correct ingredients for a good quality toasted sandwich, so he grabbed those ingredients, put it together and quickly toasted it.
When he finished, he asked one of the guards where Eji’s office was, saying ‘the boss’ rather than ‘Eji’. They led him to a room on the first floor, and Sakari knocked.
“Who is it and what do you want?”
“It’s Sakari.”
There were a few seconds of silence, then Eji spoke again. “Fine. Come in.”
Sakari opened the door and made his way straight to Eji’s desk, putting the plate down in front of him. “I made this for you.”
Eji stared at the plate. Sakari could see the muscles in his jaw tensing. He didn’t make any movements to touch the food at all. In fact, he looked angry. Even angrier when he looked up at Sakari with fire in his eyes.
“Who told you to make food?” His voice was cold, deep and ominous. “Because I sure as fuck did not.”
Sakari swallowed. “I thought- “
“Clearly you didn’t!” Eji stood up from his seat. Sakari felt a rush of fear go through him and to his legs, telling him to run, but he stayed. “I told you I had to be supervising you every time you cooked! You did not have my permission to- “
Eji stopped his yelling when the door opened. His brother came strolling in, yawning. “Man- your yelling woke me up from a couch nap.”
Eji sighed and quietened his voice, keeping his seething anger in his tone. “Ivar… Now is not the time.”
“Pft. What’s that on your desk? Smells good.”
“Ivar do not touch the sandwich.”
Ivar, being a classic little brother, disobeyed. He gave Eji a pleading look, but when his older brother’s serious glare didn’t let up, he launched at the plate and grabbed the sandwich, standing behind Sakari and taking a big bite.
“IVAR! I cannot believe you! Spit it out!”
“No! It’s tasty and I’m hungry!”
Eji hit the desk, causing an already scared and jumpy Sakari to flinch. His voice was quiet compared to the arguing brothers’ voices. “I- I’m sorry- I promise the sandwich is edible…”
“Put the fucking sandwich down! You could die!”
“Oh my god, Eji, I’m not going to die! You’re so worried about fucking poison that you refuse to eat, and we have never been poisoned before! Let it go already!”
“He’s a new cook! He could be a rival or some kind of detective that would pray on our downfall! Spit. It. OUT!”
Ivar took another bite. “Eji, it’s fine. It tastes normal.”
“Who cares if it tastes normal??? It doesn’t take much poison to kill a man! You’re going to die!”
Eji made his way around the desk and approached Ivar, slapping the sandwich out of his hand aggressively. Sakari stepped back but was grabbed by the collar by the infuriated man and was pulled close to him. He thought that this was the end, he would either be beaten, killed, or knocked out.
Either way, he knew his mission had failed.
