James and Henry left after dinner. They had to return to their own pack and get back to work. I was confused as to how many packs there were and how things ran with and without the Alpha around. I stared at William until he noticed me. He was reading something by candlelight.

“Did you need something, Elias?”

“Perhaps.”

“Get on with it, then.”

“How many packs are there? How do things run when the alpha leaves the pack? Do you all get along? How does one become the Alpha? When did you take over this pack, because I remember the older Alpha?”

“Hmm. You have a ton of questions.”

“Yes, I do. I would apologize for them, but I’m not really sorry.”

“Hmm, let me see. There are plenty of packs, hundreds, if not thousands—-”

“How do you stay hidden from the humans?” I said, interrupting him.

“Elias, please, let me answer your questions from before, before you add anymore.”

“Sorry.” I groaned.

“As I was saying, there might be thousands around the world now. I couldn’t tell you. Werewolves split off and fight for territory all the time. We don’t all get along. Henry and I aren’t a rare case, but there are definitely packs that can’t stand each other and fight for land. I took over this pack a handful of years ago, though for you, I’m sure it doesn’t seem that long ago. As for the Alpha before, he was old and had no will to live. He asked me to end his suffering. As for how one becomes the Alpha, they either start a new pack, or they take over an older pack by killing the acting Alpha.”

“How barbaric.” I muttered.

“Yes, it can be, but that is the price of sharing your soul with an animal. Sometimes there are animalistic traits and tendencies that even we can’t shake.” He said, closing the book he was reading.

“Do you not fear being overtaken?” I asked.

“Henry is my closet pack neighbour, and no. I have a poor reputation with other packs. There is a reason Henry is my only pack neighbour.”

“William, did you… kill them?”

“Yes, but just the Alpha’s and anyone who refused to back down when they were told. Those who wanted to leave to another pack did that, those who wanted to join my pack did that as well. It’s normal to take over smaller and weaker packs. We don’t even think twice about it, it’s again an animal thing and needing the most space. Territory is the primary cause for any werewolf fight.”

“How did you know to come this way to find me and my father?”

“See, that’s the funny thing. I didn’t come here for you or your father. I took this pack because I wanted the land. I wasn’t born right here, but there once used to be a pack near to here. Your father made sure it was demolished. This one, who knows why he didn’t do to them like he did to my father’s pack? It was the closest pack to my home, and the alpha was willing to pretty much hand over his land, so I took it. As for you. I had no idea you were as close as you were, and once I found out who you were, that was it. I saw you once, riding a black horse, and I confirmed it. Then we made a plan of attack. Now we are here.”

“I see.”

“My plan was to take your father, to demand you hand him over, but I found out he was dead, and I wanted you. You were perfect to shoulder his punishment. One vampire of his bloodline was good enough to take his spot.”

“I understand. I think if I were in your position, I would want the same thing.”

“No, you wouldn’t. You aren’t like I am. You would be more diplomatic about it. You might have attacked our kind, but you didn’t force your hand. I did. You tried to be peaceful about things. I wanted war, and I got that.”

“As you said, it’s your nature.”

“The minute I knew about you, I wanted to possess you. By any means necessary, even if your father was dead.”

“I understand this. You’ve claimed me as your war prize. Is that normal too?”

“Not exactly…” He said.

Sitting down in the other chair finally I crossed my leg over the other, and spoke.

“I hope one day we can rule civilly, my people and yours.”

“Perhaps.”

Relaxing back into the chair, I hummed before sharing something with William.

“You know, It’s odd. There are things I miss about my home, but it was never the stones or the building itself, just the memories and objects inside it. If you can build something better from the stones, please do. The memories embedded in those stones deserve better.”

“Your mother?”

“More than just her, there was once my father wasn’t just a monster, and I know that seems unlikely, but it’s true. I hate how blind I was about his actions and those who followed him while pretending to follow me.”

“Love and loss, and betrayal changes people. Your father took that to the extreme. I can’t speak for him, nor would I ever. I have never been in love. Your mother found a wolf, and they created a life, regardless of how I feel about that. Their actions directly wounded me, and there’s nothing that can be done about that now.”

“James knows where my brother is.”

William paused, looking at me.

“Is that so? Did you want to meet him?”

“Selfishly, Yes. But he is safer away from me.”

“He is unsafe because he is a hybrid, and our kind on this side of the world aren’t open to that. But I’m sure when the time comes, he will seek you out.”

“Our side of the world—-Wait! Do you know something about my brother that I do not?”

“I know a bit. Just that your brother is not on our side of the world. James brought him up while you were with your aunt—-”

“You know she’s my aunt?”

“Yes, I pay attention sometimes, Elias.”

“Back to your brother. James brought up the fact that he was across the world and their views were wildly different from ours.”

“Did you intend to share this with me?” I asked, annoyed.

“Yes, I did. I just wasn’t sure when to bring it up with you. That is all.”

I nodded. My brother, being across the world, made sense. It meant that my father couldn’t find him and kill him. But it also meant that our chances of meeting were slim. If at all. I only hoped that he had a good childhood and was a good man. One of our mother’s children had to be a good person, and it wasn’t me. I wasn’t worthy of that title.

I watched William put more wood in the fireplace and wondered if I would go the same way as my mother. Killed by a product of the bond she created. My aunt had only told me that a taboo love had created my brother, but a worthy love nonetheless.

“If vampires and wolves aren’t meant to be together and have children, then why does it happen?”

“It’s my understanding that it’s rare, at least here. But that might only be because of the way we view those who are in those relations and most times, the children are… Well, you get it.”

Killed. He meant to say killed. The same thing that would have happened to my brother if he had stayed here.

“Even you disliked it when I told you about my half-breed brother.”

“Yes, and I still don’t like it. But I will keep that to myself, less I become a product of your father’s hatred.”

“How are we any different? How are James and Henry any different?”

“We are not lovers. They are, but they can’t produce an heir from their actions.”

Stopping myself from asking him what if they could? I just looked into the fire. He was right; we weren’t lovers; it was more complicated than that. We were two people linked by terrible circumstances that wouldn’t have been in the same room otherwise.

William stood up and spoke.

“I have to join the others hunting tomorrow. I need to head to bed early.”

He didn’t wait for me to say anything. He just went off to the bedroom. I sat and watched the fire until it was just coals left. I put more wood into the fire and glanced at the door. I was sure he was good and asleep now. It had been awhile since he had gone to bed. Standing up, I put my boots on and found something that would take the place of a decent coat.

When William woke up, chances were I would not be here, not because I was leaving. I had every intention of coming back. There was just something I was dying to do. Closing the door, the snow had stopped falling, and it was almost looking like spring might be on the way.

Heading towards the ruins of my kingdom. I wanted my horses.

Didn't William already say the horses were alright? Where do you plan to put them without a stable?
