Sleeping in a bedroll. Can't say I like It. My back hurts a bit after waking up. After I went to bed the others still talked quite a bit. I wanted to throw something at them but It seems their day wasnt exhausting as mine. Lurek didn't talk with them or atleast he was silent. Anyway I was in sleepful bliss when Durxel came into our tent while It was still dark. He woke up us with a spray of water and said we should get ready to leave. Orders from the commander he said. So we gathered our stuff and put it all in a wagon. Ready to leave I guess. Somebody pokes my shoulder as I turn around, the face of Alrik greets me. Still a bit wet from Durxel's method of waking us up. He points somewhere in the distance.
"You know this woman that keeps staring in our direction?" I look to where he points. Not a suprise to me but I see my mother standing there. I get the feeling again that I do not want to leave. I answer him with a heavy sight.
" Thats my mother. She's probably seeing me off. Makes me not want to leave" I said to him honestly. Alrik told me.
"Yeah It's hard or so I heard. Didn't have a family per se you know. I live at the orphanage in Tyrael City though we are a bit understaffed so I voluntered for the selection. Wanted to make It easier for Velona that runs It." I am amazed by his statement because he seems younger than me. I ask him.
"How old are you again?" while looking at my mother absentminded he told me.
" I am eleven now. You are eight right? That makes you the second youngest in our small group. A word of caution too. You know Lurek ,the one who you subdued yesterday?" I nod in response. " He's got a few older friends back in the city. You won't have It easy I tell you. They already began their sword training and are quite sucessful with It. Prime candidates for the selection are the talks about them" I shrug my shoulders in response. "Don't care about bullies. I will see when It happens." I notice that Durxel makes his way towards us. He seems quite hagard when I now look at him. He didn't seem that way when I first saw him yesterday. He stops by me.
"Thats your mother" He points at her. I nod again. " Her names Mary?" I nod again. " Your the son of Mary?!" I mean yeah? That's what I just told you. I just nod again. " Oh my god I almost killed you!" He begins to fuss over me. I sigh. " Its fine. Trystan told you It's fine and I am of the same opinion. You can stop touching me. The wounds are already healed but your still hurting me a bit." He squeezes my arm but then lets go. He calms down and begins to speak. "Did she ever taught you about magic?" I shake my head. The only thing she told me about It is that you need to have a very sharp mind for It and most importantly talent for manipulating the weave magic and that I don't have the talent for It. But I will keep dreaming! I will learn how to magically clean items and improve your cooking. Just like mom! Cleaning dishes is the worst...
"I don't have the talent for It. She always talks like I am more like my father." Durxel puts a finger to his chin." Hmm Hmmm Hmmmm that makes sense. You are definitly more suited ,with your body build, for mundane work. That means your choice in the selection, If you get even that far, is limited to two. Technically three but the last one is just the failure option. Which isn't bad at all mind you!." I am getting curious now. Everybody keeps telling me about the selection but I don't know what in the 9 hells It is. "Can you please explain what the selection is?" Durxel face shows suprise. "They didn't tell you? Well then, let me be your teacher. Every 5 years our students, be It the magic, divine and or swordsmanship schools, get the assignment to show their progress in a tournament or a private exam. The most desired and sought after is the combat exam called by the name of the Trial of Maximus. Even some mages perform there to show their combat skills and abilities. The groups are first split to determine the best mages, swordsmans or clerics. After the brackets of each group gets thrown together to fight each other and in the end show the best combatant of this selection. Suceeding there could kickstart a position in a holy temple or getting recruited by renown adventures guild."
Hm sounds kinda exciting.
"I don't know about the tournament. I don't like showboating one bit." He interrupts me almost immediatly.
"Is It showboating to show how far you got after 5 years of hard training? It's a carthasis you can't understand If you haven't tried It yourself. There are no templeknights that didn't participate in the Trial of Maximus. Even Sir Trystan did and he will certainly train you for It so be prepared. Anyway get on the wagon or do you want to walk to Tyrael City?" I look at him with a blank face.
"I can sit later. I kinda want to walk to right now."
And the caravan started moving. We went past the ambush area. The road was cleaned up to my suprise. Nothing looked like there was a battle going on yesterday. In my wonderment I hear a horse behind me come to a stop. It's Trystan on Elaine. He got his helmet on that keeps his face hidden. He looks at me and out of the helmet bellows out a voice that echoes because of the helmet. The only thing he says to me is.
"Keep by my side till we make the next stop. See It as your first training."
