A very, very long time ago, the Earth was still a young planet. Carefree it moved its orbits around its life-giver, the Sun. It was pretty to look at, with all the blue seas, and the young Earth should have had no reason to be sad.
But that's exactly what it was, sad and lonely. The other planets were there, but too far away to be good company for the Earth.
This continued for a long time until the young planet turned to the Sun and said:
"Good Sun, you give me light and warmth, and I like that very much, but your other foster children are so far away and I am so alone. Will you not give me a companion?"
The Sun, full of warmth (as usual), looked at the little Earth and answered:
"Oh my child, I understand that you are lonely, but there is nothing I can do about it. Besides, it would also distract from your beautiful blue if a companion were with you."
Sadly, the little Earth accepted what was said and continued on its way, still hoping that something would happen that would end its sorrow.
Thousands more times the small Earth had circled the Sun without anything changing. But then suddenly came the time from which everything would be different. Completely unexpectedly, an object appeared and hit the unsuspecting Earth on its orbit.
Dust, debris and rock were thrown around and enveloped the poor Earth like a cloud.
A deep shaking had passed through the Earth, and it felt a discomfort deep into its core. It also felt as if something had broken out of it, and that made it even sadder.
The cloud of debris that enveloped it disturbed it greatly, and it took several orbits of the Sun for it to begin to dissipate.
However, the cloud of rock and debris did not actually dissipate, but began to join together and take on a round shape.
Earth looked at this with great concern at first, because it had never experienced this before, but its interest quickly waned.
Some time had passed, much from our point of view, little from the point of view of a planet, when Earth suddenly heard a little voice:
"Hello, who are you and where am I?"
The little blue Earth turned in amazement to the former debris cloud, which it had not really paid attention to for a long time, and was astonished to find that there was now a small, gray object, quite similar to a planet.
"I am Earth, and this is the solar system where we all orbit around the warming Sun. And who are you?"
"Hmm, I'm not quite sure. A little bit I feel like I'm from far away, but a big part of me feels like I already know you. I'm still a little confused," said the gray object.
And then the Earth understood! When it was hit a long time ago, a part of it had been hurled into space, from which this little gray planet had emerged. This is what it told the little one, and then it spoke:
"For a long time I have wished for a companion, and now I no longer have to be alone. Moon I will call you, and we will be each other's company and joy."
The little Moon was happy about this, and when it and the Earth noticed that it reflected the sunlight quite lovely on the Earth, this made both of them even happier.
From then on, the Moon revolved together with the Earth around the warming Sun, and both were never lonely again. And the worry of the Sun that the companion distracted from the beautiful blue was in vain, for the Moon made the seas flow back and forth more beautifully, and it made them shine in the silver moonlight.
And Earth and Moon were happy and content until the end of days.
