I wake up to 2 people surrounding me,
"is he dead?" one says.
"We're ghosts. I don't think you can get any more dead." another says.
The first one speaks again, "I wasn't talking about us. Do we wake him up?"
"I don't know how to wake people up." the second voice responds
I quickly get up and stare blankly at the two blurry figures
"actually, wait; maybe I do." the second voice adds
I hesitate to speak, but one of them quickly asks my name. "Julian," I reply. The other one returns. "I'm Rain. That's Elias," she points out. "Are you okay?" Elias asks. "yeah, just unsure of where I am." Elias suddenly seems hesitant to say anything more.
"Do you want to come inside," Rain asks? She was pointing to a cabin a few feet from us. When we go inside, there's tea sitting on the counter, the steam still rising. "Do you want tea?" Rain asks.
As she goes to get the tea Elias and Rain begin speaking about something. I stare out at the Rain. Why this feels so wrong, yet it feels like I'm supposed to be here? Rain places a cup of tea on the window sill. "Where are you from?" she asks. When I try to think of my city's name, I can't remember it though I've lived there my whole life. "I don't know, all I remember was the sound of the door closing. "yeah, I understand, I don't remember much before being here either, but I guess I never really lived long enough to have anything to remember. She quietly says, as if she feels guilty for even asking. After minutes of just watching the rain fall, I hear a beep followed by Elias turning to Rain and asking, "Are you ready to go?"
"I don't think we can take Julian," Rain says. "Yeah, but they need us, plus extra help," Elias remarks. "Or extra mess to clean up," he mumbles faintly. "Whatever we're doing, decide quick." Elias says, "let's go. One more person can't hurt. "Rain says. Rain grabs my attention from the window to the wall near the door. "here you go," Rain says as we stand in front of a line of hangers with bags and plain bookbags.
"I thought since you have a book with you, you'd like to keep it with you" I realize I'm still holding my journal before I woke up here. "Right then, we're ready to go?" Elias calls out. "Nearly!" Rain says, we'll explain everything once we start heading over there, and she walks to talk to Elias. I notice the moonstone on the front when I place my journal into the book bag. Somehow when I saw them first, I hadn't even thought there was anything on it. Then I see a book. Same as the bag, it has a moon on it, "these people aren't going to save themselves," Elias calls out. I quickly shove it into my bag. It's not stealing if it's for finding out what the hell is going on. Soon we're walking through an endless loop of trees and bushes.
"Where are we going?" I ask.
"Something happened at a school. We need to help someone named uh-," Rain looks over at Elias. "I don't know. They didn't give a name this time," he says. When we arrive at the gate, I realize this is my school, or at least the one I attended last year. We walk through the halls with students running out, but nobody knows we're there. Then there's an open dorm room door. My old room. Once we pass the tape, I see a pool of blood, and I nearly fall backward. "We're too late." Rain's voice breaks. "I'm sorry, I should've called. I should've told him." Elias replies as he hugs her. I stare at the room for longer, but then I feel like I'm living in it again.
I hear a knock at the door, my best friend, but I can't quite remember his name, and we talk for hours. We go to the local grocery store to get snacks and watch a new movie she's been ranting about since the title was released. When I finally fall asleep, I feel a sharp, sudden pain in my stomach, but it doesn't wake me up but instead pulls me deeper asleep. "Julian?" Rain brushes my arm. "You seemed like you were thinking about something," she says
"Yeah, something feels too familiar here," I say. "Well, I need help finding out what happened as soon as information from Leo comes back," she says "who's Leo," I ask. "He's the victim," she says. "What?" I ask. "We usually try to help solve crimes committed against people in our community, using the ability to speak to those who have died if we couldn't prevent their death," she says.
