As soon as everyone saw that the mana barrier had disappeared the firing began again. Amidst the firing one of the soldiers who was also the vice-captain in charge in the absence of Gale noticed something unusual. “Everyone, halt!”
As his voice resounded in everyone’s ears the firing stopped. When the dust from the explosions cleared only a small crater remained.
“Where did they go?” The vice-captain asked surprised.
“Above!” Someone shouted causing everyone to look up. Alex and Blake were floating 30 meters above in midair. Alex had jumped up pulling Blake along with him just before the attacks hit. The next moment he continuously released a volley of mana slashes but instead of his previous slashes which exploded, some of them were sharp like the edge of a well refined blade. The soldiers shot mana beams at them while some were deflected others passed through slicing through the prexa’s.
Amid the barrage of attacks both of them landed on the ground. A fire ball and several water bullets headed their way released by two of the soldiers nearby. Alex launched a single mana slash cutting the fireball in half while the water bullets were countered by Blake’s mana balls.
‘This human… his strength has increased. Before, did he really used a tier one spell?’ Blake wondered at the sudden change.
“HAAA!” A battle cry came from behind them as a soldier waved his sword upon them. But instead of panicking Alex turned around swiftly blocking with his sword. The next moment he kicked him in the gut. The soldier fell several meters away just from the simple kick.
He quickly picked the soldier’s sword up and tossed it to Blake. “I can’t maintain this super human strength forever. We’ve got another 8 minutes tops!” Alex explained as he erected a semi mana barrier blocking another rush of attacks.
“Alright that’s more than enough to take these chumps out!” Blake said excited as he spun the sword in his hands several times.
“No killing or I’ll take that sword back.” Alex warned as he grabbed Blake’s arm.
“Tch! Alright, alright!” Blake said as he released his hand and blocked two spears coming at them with the sword. Alex who was releasing his mana slashes suddenly felt a pull on his arm as he was pulled back. This thing continued again and again. Alex, “Oi! We are still wearing the cuffs try to keep yourself around me.”
“Tch! Fine human!” Blake yelled as he pushed the spear users back and stood back-to-back with him. “We can’t afford much long-distance fights, I don’t think your artifact has that much mana to last so long.” Blake said eyeing the soldiers, weapons lighting up with mana.
“Then let’s go close quarters. Alex said as his sword suddenly got covered in dense black mana.
“Ho… that’s a neat trick human.” Blake said inspecting the black mana which strengthened his sword. Blake followed the same, as the sword in his hand also got covered by a dense grey mana. The next moment Alex jumped into the air pulling Blake with him. Spells targeted them in midair but they weren’t able to break Alex and Blake’s combined barriers.
Both of them landed among the crowded soldiers.
*Clank* *Clank*
The sound of metal ringing resounded throughout the forest as two teenagers held their own against the soldiers. Blake had good enough fighting experience to defend himself while Alex’s tier one spell had improved his reflexes along with his reaction speed which made it easier for him to counter attacks easily despite his lack of skill.
Most of the soldiers prexa’s had been put out of commission whereas the ones still working couldn’t be used to attack as they might take their own people out with it. Alex’s moves were initially awkward as he cut his opponents and neutralized them but as the battle progressed, he seemed to be getting a hang of it. Of course, all this didn’t come without a price as he barely held his mental state together. Fighting hundreds of people where a slight mistake could take their lives wasn’t a part of his daily routine. He hadn’t forgotten that a murder was still a murder whether in his world or here.
Any attacks from their blind spots were taken care off by Blake’s superior sword skills.
Vice-Captain, ‘How is this possible? As per our info Blake wasn’t supposed to be this strong… no the main problem here is that other kid, I can’t sense a single drop of mana from him but just before they started attacking, there was a surge in mana around him. One other thing that’s bothering me is that thing which is in his jacket’s pocket releasing an enormous mana. In any case, I’ll need more reinforcements.’
“Everyone don’t try to kill them, just try to buy time.” He then turned around to a nearby soldier.
“You! Immediately contact the HQ and ask for reinforcements, tell them to send a captain level personnel!” The soldier seemed confused at the vice captain’s orders. Sure, Blake and Alex had escaped from captain Gale but only because they caught him off guard. He didn’t feel that they would lose this fight.
“NOW I SAID!” The vice-captain shouted. Not wanting to be dead meat the soldier promptly complied.
“Shit! Human, it seems they are bringing in more people, we need to take that one out before he calls reinforcements!” Blake informed as he noticed the Vice-Captain’s orders.
“Okay!” Alex complied as he quickly pushed back the three soldiers in front of him before turning towards the one Blake pointed.
Not a second later 3 mana slashes made their way towards him. The soldier saw the incoming attack but was caught off guard unable to react in time.
*Boom* *Boom* *Boom*
The sound of explosions went off however the attacks didn’t reach him. The Vice-Captain stood in front of him who had cancelled the attacks with his mana cladded daggers.
