Wednesday 2nd of November 2016, Headquarters of the International Police, Alexandras Avenue, Athens
“What are we waiting for?”, I ask Tobias, as the world spins around me. Meanwhile he watches the buzzling traffic many meters below. The sun shines directly into our office on the top floor. I can already assume, that this is going to be a problem in summer, but now that we are heading towards winter I’m glad for this little heater in the sky.
His Silhouette moves, he turns around. Still everything is blurring in front of my eyes like a colourless river.
“Marcos stop that, or you will puke. We just ate something.”
With my feet I force the office chair to stop. “Okay, then give me the bin beforehand.”
He looks around: “We don’t have one.” I move towards the next drawer. The room feels bigger and colder, since everyone left. There is an echo when speaking and it’s unusually quiet.
“I don’t know.”, says Tobias, while I discover that the top drawer is empty.
“Huh? What do you not know?” Slowly the sea calms down and the swinging comes to a halt.
“Well, what we are waiting for. I mean we don’t have a case yet and there seems to be nothing else we can do.”
“Maybe we should ask our boss.”, I suggest. The top drawer was empty, but the second one might hold a secret.
“No, I’m afraid he’ll have our guts for garters. Also, he told us to not ask him in particular.” I approve with a nod and explore the third drawer, since the second one was empty too. Yes, I tend to do uninteresting thing when I’m bored. Though things got a lot more interesting when I found a furniture magazine and a note pinned on it in the drawer.
Der future owners of this room,
in case the current furniture ensemble seems a little patchy, here are some home decor ideas to create a cosy atmosphere at your workspace. Fyi the whole left wall is magnetic and the cost are carried by the employer ;),
I read out loud. “That’s great,” Toby says, “we can order a paper bin and a shelf there.”
Slowly I turn my head to his direction. “Yes, a bin would be useful, but imagine… a potted plant, there in the corner, colourful paperclips, funny magnets for the wall or a ‘good morning’ coffee mug for especially good mornings.”
Tobias shakes his head, runs his fingers trough his hair and sits down. A clear sign I’m making him speechless again.
“Are you alright?”, he asks and I must admit, that I’ve got a little too far there.
“I am sorry.” I laugh nervously, because it is kind of embarrassing.
“Okay, Dekofairy.”, he can’t but laugh too saying this word. “Let’s see what we have here.” With outstretched arm he pulls the ‘KöbelMöbel’ catalogue closer.
The afternoon passes by quickly. Eagerly I order all kinds of things with phone, because our PC’s are not set-up yet. Even Tobias brought up some ideas. We found some really cool stuff and before we had enough to open a warehouse it was four o’clock.
It might have been a mistake to not ask for work. I felt a little queasy around my stomach. At least no one has noticed that we actually didn’t do anything.
I close the catalogue and wipe the dust off the table before we leave the room. That’s going to be a lot of fun, I think. In the hallway we see a lot of our colleagues about to head home too. The elevator fills up level by level, with people whose name we are going to know or whom we will wish a good Day in the future.
Slowly cars accumulate the streets, even though the mass don’t compare to metropoles like New York or Shanghai, therefore the traffic system is complete Chaos at some places, because he streets are either too narrow or unclear. This is the reason why I prefer to go by bike, so I can use tiny alleys as shortcuts. On my way I accompany Tobias to the metro station, next to the neighbouring building, in front of the basketball court and there I continue my ride to Zografou the district where the flat share is, my home.
