Free Will

Prologue

Prologue

Feb 14, 2023

Gabriel Cooper-Anderson stared across the table at his adversary, game face firmly in place. His adversary stared deep into his eyes, unruffled.

“You’re saying there is no one in the greater Baltimore area who would rock your world. Not one person I could find to fix you up with?” Gabriel demanded.

“More or less. Many have tried, many have failed," responded his stubborn opponent.

“Will, look at you. How hard can it be? Your face is like a young, pretty-boy Rob Lowe got knocked up by a smoldering Henry Cavill, but you have even fancier eyes and edgier eyebrows. Do criminals not just turn themselves in voluntarily to get the chance to talk to you?”

Will Adams, detective in the Baltimore Special Victims Unit, shrugged. “Very rarely, and criminals generally aren’t my type. Thanks for the edgy eyebrow compliment, though. I now plan to go home and stare at them in a lighted mirror for the rest of the night.”

Gabriel snorted. “I would, too, if I had those eyebrows. That’s okay. I have some very sexy eyebrows at home that I can go stare at. So, Will, just in case I want to try and succeed where you and all the others have failed, what is your type?”

An amused gleam in his eye, Will countered, “My type is people who don’t tell me about their plans to go home and stare at their husband’s eyebrows because then I have to picture that and I just don’t want to.”

“Well, if that’s the only criterion, then there should be no shortage of candidates. Most people don’t share my fetish for my husband’s eyebrows.”

Now Will snorted. “It’s not quite that easy. My dating pool is more of a shallow puddle. I don’t date Alphas, I’m not attracted to females, I have dated male Omegas, but I’m mainly attracted to other male Betas. Of those, obviously I only date the ones who are into guys. So, we’re talking ten percent of twenty-five percent of the population, and that’s if you’re considering all ages, makes, and models.”

The only acknowledgement of his math was an unconcerned shrug.

“If you’ve got a hot, gay, male Beta who is also a decent person, reasonably intelligent, has a good sense of humor, has no horrific political opinions, and who is fairly close to my age that you've been keeping on ice somewhere, then sure. Fix me up with him. Chances are good, however, that we’ve already met and made up our minds about each other. This isn’t a very big city. Chances are even better that even if we've never met, he doesn’t date other Betas.”

Gabriel gave him a playful scowl and snapped his fingers in Will's general direction a couple of times. “Tsst. Ix-nay on the dark predictions! Have some faith. I’m not going to bring you some guy who doesn't date Betas! Yeesh. Grumpy. Okay. Will doesn’t date Alphas–I get that. I know that song by heart. It’s gotta be hot, nice, smart, funny, gay male Betas for Will. Consider that gauntlet picked up. I like a discerning customer.”

“I'm sorry for being grumpy. It's been a long week and my shitty love life is a sore subject. I honestly don’t know why you’re taking an interest in this.”

“I’m quirky that way,” replied Gabriel with a sphynx-like smile and the elevation of what Will thought of as an eyebrow that did not deserve to be casually dismissed.

ANd I can’t even read the first chapter without a question….. in your ABO universe Betas are only 25% of the population? So do Omegas and Alphas make up the rest or is there a category for non-ABO humans?

Will Adams is a Beta and a Baltimore SVU detective. He refuses to date Alphas (they have enough going for them already, in his opinion), and he’s not very fond of lawyers, either. Particularly not defense attorneys.

New to Baltimore, Brent James, is an Alpha and a defense attorney with the Anastasia Anderson Legal Fund, an organization that aims to protect Omegas and their rights. Easygoing Brent will date whoever catches his eye, including cops and Betas, and as a gorgeous Golden Boy with a good income and a great personality, he has never struggled much with having his interest reciprocated. There is one particular Beta and cop, however, who seems unmoved by Brent’s keen interest in him.

Despite the fact that they are very imperfectly perfect for each other, when their professional paths align, Will and Brent discover a mutual interest that goes well beyond their work.

Free Will is for ages 18+: It contains explicit sexual content, adult language, and occasional discussion of sexual violence related to the protagonists' professions.

As with Free Love, readers can expect a lively and very spicy read that recognizes that sex is best when it's fully consensual and respectful of the minds and bodies of the people having it. You can also expect a LOT of very nerdily researched legal, medical, and general detail woven throughout the story as well as equally nerdy pop culture references. And banter! With jokes! There will be jokes.

Series updates on Mondays and Thursdays at 12 am PST.
