“Judging from the sun rays, it’s about 5:00 a.m. I suppose. We need to start moving now.” Blake said as he viewed the sky outside from the cave.
Currently Blake and Alex had to go to the neighboring city Nerfadox, the Capital City of the Kingdom, Green Deralus. Near the outskirts was one of Blake’s secret hideouts where he had a stash of magical items. Apparently one of them could free them of these cuffs. As for the device which will help Alex teleport back to earth was in the City of Nerfadox itself.
It was nearing two weeks since their fight with Gale. They were several times caught by the scouting teams but somehow managed to escape with their lives. The stone was proving very much useful in this case.
It was a miracle that they were able to make it this fast to the neighboring city, off road through the hills and forests. If it weren’t for Blake, knowing the ins and around the forest, Alex didn’t doubt that he would definitely have been lost.
‘I think this is a good time to talk about the stone now.’ Miracle said.
Alex remained silent waiting for him to continue.
‘Before I explain to you my findings about the stone, I need to first explain to you the concept of a soul holder.’
‘Soul holder?’ Alex asked inwardly while grabbing the soul holder resting in his pocket.
‘Yes. As you know I reside inside that soul holder. But it is only my soul that resides inside it and not my whole physical being. The soul holder is a magical device capable of storing souls of beasts inside it. Much like myself any other beasts of a higher or lower caliber could also be stored inside it.’
‘Then, can it store human—’
‘No, its specifically designed to store beasts and not anyone resembling the soul of a human being. It was part of a reason why soul holders were made forbidden but that’s a topic for later.’
Alex’s eyes widened when he heard the word forbidden. He finally began to understand a little that him having Miracle seemed to be quite an exceptional circumstance.
‘Anyway, to continue, for a beast’s soul to be stored inside the soul holder, there must be cooperation from the beast itself. The cooperation can be gained either voluntarily by the beast or it could be forced.’
Alex wondered which was it for Miracle but he failed to imagine anyone capable of forcing him to get inside the soul holder.
‘That soul stone is working on a somewhat similar concept of the soul holder… however, here the only the way to store the soul inside is by forcing it. Unlike me who has complete freedom inside my own realm residing in the soul holder, that soul stone has shacked a powerful being’s soul inside it.’
Alex, ‘T-Then… the power of the soul stone to absorb mana is…’
‘Correct, it comes from the soul trapped inside it. But the intriguing thing about this stone is that it is designed to capture souls. Not to mention the person you saw in the dream, though not complete human had the soul constitution closely resembling that of a human.’
Alex realized what this meant. ‘Then does that mean that it can store the souls of humans too?’
‘Quite possibly. But the stone only has the function of trapping a soul within it. The way you are able to use it to suck out people’s mana is the ability of the person inside. Not to mention you saw it right? That Blake’s memories?’
Alex suddenly stopped in his steps causing Blake to look back. “Hm? Oi human what’s wrong? You need to take a shit again? It’s difficult to do it with these cuffs as it is, just hold a little while longer—
“No, its nothing. Thought some pebble got in my shoe but its alright. Let’s continue.” Alex said as he quickly tapped his shoe on the ground and began walking.
‘How did you know?’ Alex asked.
‘When Blake grabbed you by your collar you grabbed his hand to brush him away. That’s when you were able to peek into his past. It was a bit vague with flashes of pictures and small memories. But you were able to make out that he has a sick sister for whom he was trying to provide. That’s why he was frustrated when he found out that he couldn’t sell the stone and lost the money. From an outside person’s perspective, it would seem that Blake was a greedy brat but we knew the actual truth.’
It was the reason why even after Blake’s outburst at that moment Alex neither retorted back nor argued with him like they usually do.
‘Then does that mean that being able to see memories is also a part of the person’s abilities who is trapped inside?’ Alex asked.
‘Yes, that is correct. Then what do you make of the dream you had?’
Alex contemplated for a few seconds before answering, ‘Is he trying to communicate with me?’
