The almighty Theo carried me down the stairs as quickly and delicately as possible, taking me over to the pack’s infirmary. He didn’t even have the courtesy to knock, kicking the doors down with a swift foot. The door flew off its hinges, crashing to the ground.
“What the hell?! Theo you just can’t slam your way in here!” Clarie was not amused by the unwelcome visit. She pushed her braided twists out of her face, annoyed, as she approached us from her desk. The woman was dressed in her light cerulean scrubs. She always looked good, something I could tell even in my state, her dark melanin skin always glowing when I saw her.
Honestly, she should drop that skincare routine sometimes.
“What is even wrong with you?!” Claire snapped. “Haven’t you ever heard of a doorbell? Seriously, I just fixed this door. If it’s not you, it’s Kira doing the same damn thing.” She stood over the badly damaged door, mourning the loss of her peaceful day.
“You're fixing this, you hear me?” The woman clearly wasn’t going to let any of this go—she barely seemed to realize I couldn’t walk on my own.
“Sorry,” there was a quick grunt before Theo helped me stand. “Promise I’ll fix it; it's just…Remy is sick.”
Clarie's brown eyes suddenly widened before poring over me with striking concern. I could feel my face drained of color as I hunched over in pain.
“What are your symptoms?” she asked, hurrying closer to my side.
Before I could speak, I threw up some more, everyone taking a step back to dodge the putrid vomit. The thin puke gave Clarie a clue.
“Interesting.” Her eyes narrowed. “When did this start?”
“This morning,” Nate answered, hovering over me with a trash can in hand. He was doing everything in his power not to join me, too.
“The vomit had started today,” I managed to clarify. “But I'd been feeling nauseous for a few weeks now.”
“Help me lay him down on one of those beds,” Claire directed the other two. Nate swiftly picked me up and followed through with her commands. Clarie disappeared into a back room before she gathered around me with her supplies.
She meticulously laid out colorful tubes on a metal tray at the bedside before she put on blue plastic gloves. My eyes watched her set up before I caught the last piece among her arsenal of tools: a large-bore needle.
Cleaning my arm with antiseptic, it dawned on me what she was about to do next.
“This will only hurt just a little, sweetie,” Clarie tried to explain before she lifted the needle.
“Noooo!” I screamed. If there was one thing I hated the most, it was needles. My irrational fear of being poked drove me to thrash around, trying to avoid the pain of the sharp instrument piercing my skin.
“Hold him down,” Clarie ordered. Of course, I flipped out immediately.
“Remy, wait—” Nate grabbed my arms. Theo joined in, and the two pinned my legs and arms down in five-point restraints. It still wasn’t enough to get me to calm down. If anything, it made it worse.
“Please don’t,” I begged. My fear was getting the best of me, and no one could talk me off the ledge. River feared needles as much as I did, and he had already hidden himself in his panic.
“Hold still,” Clarie said as she finally pierced the skin. A sharp pain arose as I cried out. I didn’t even look, my eyes glancing over to Theo who held back his own tears.
“You're doing great,” he softly whispered as Clarie worked fast, drawing blood from the vein until she was all done. She withdrew the butterfly needle, placing gauze and bandage over my arm. Even though she was finished, I still continued to sob, traumatized by the whole ordeal.
“It will be a few minutes until I get the results, but for now, let’s get him something for that nausea.”
Clarie’s medicine always did the trick. Sipping on the warm ginger tea while we waited, the next few minutes were nerve-wracking for everyone. Theo had become a ghost, barely acknowledging anyone’s presence, while Nate paced back and forth, nervously mumbling to himself. It wasn’t until Clarie returned that I realized how long I had been holding my breath.
“Well, I found out why Remy’s been throwing up.” Her soft brown eyes scanned the room, trying to gauge where our heads were. The deafening silence that followed only made me fear the worst.
‘I’m dying!’ I cried to River, who in return, didn’t seem to have much of a response to my crazy conspiracy theory.
“What is it?! Just tell us already!” Nate raised his voice, almost shouting. Of course, he had no anger behind it. He was just racked with stress.
A defeated sigh left her lips before she looked me deeply in the eyes.
“Congratulations, Remy,” she said. ”You're with child.”
All the air left the room. My mind had to do a double-take, processing Clarie’s statement.
“What?” The question came out deadpanned. I blankly stared at the woman to see if she was joking. This had to be a joke… right? The whole world had gone silent, as Clarie continued on, showing me the lab results. I had the strangest sensation of stepping out of my body.
Is this real? I can’t get pregnant…I can’t.
Oh, wait— like a huge rock was thrown into a windshield, my mind shattered. All the memories of Dr. Louis lecturing me about werewolf production and Clarie’s incessant nagging to use protection rushed back all at once.
I had fucked up.
Even after the lake house, the Alphas and I had some more accidents. And I thought little of it because I had forgotten about the possibility.
How stupid of me!
Even now, as I looked down at my swollen belly, I still couldn’t believe it was possible. It was like an enormous weight had been placed on my shoulders. Every decision from this point of my life could affect another—a new life that rested inside of me.
After the ordeal, I immediately shut down. The Alphas couldn’t get a word out of me. Everyone was on edge from the new discovery. It took a week of silence for me, sifting through the whole mess to finally accept our new reality.
Everyone had mixed reactions. Theo and Nate were nervous but excited about the news. Barron and Ezra were hyped about it, the wolves elated about the possibility of a little pup that would soon join our pack. And then there was River.
My wolf wasn’t exactly thrilled about our little bundle of joy. You couldn’t even bring up the subject without him going berserk. Deep down, I knew he cared about our baby but there was something preventing him from getting too attached. Maybe it was fear or something else, but River would never tell.
I, for one, was coming around to the idea. I mean it was weird, it wasn’t something I imagined for myself. How could you wrap your head around the fact that your body was fully capable of pregnancy? It was a bizarre concept to begin with, but it was my life now—a tiny blessing in disguise. I was more nervous now than ever that anything would remotely affect the pup. I was becoming like my mother, Beth, slowly fretting over the little things.
Like mother, like son, I guess.
Nate pulled his black truck into the clinic parking lot. I unbuckled my seat belt and adjusted my hoodie so it covered my pregnant form. I was only two months along, my belly barely showing but I still hid it. The blazing heat from the summer sun made sure to remind me every single day how unsuitable my ensemble was, but I didn’t know what else to do. I was paranoid that someone would find out. I always looked like I was illegally smuggling two overstuffed burritos underneath my shirt.
The pregnancy was a heavily guarded secret. Only the Alphas, Clarie, and I knew about this little surprise. I wasn’t exactly ready to tell anyone yet, especially when I didn't know if I could carry the baby safely to term. To err on the side of caution, the Alphas agreed to keep the secret, and personally, I didn’t think Theo or Nate was ready to tell their parents either.
Getting out of the truck, the three of us made our way into the tiny little clinic on second avenue. Despite being as inconspicuous as possible, we still drew attention to ourselves. Everyone knew our faces, though luckily, the clinic here served a variety of clientele, hiding in plain sight. We all checked in, giving the appearance we all needed to see the doctor. Sitting down in the old tacky fabric chairs in the half-filled waiting room, the dust in there was starting to stir up my allergies. But even that barely served as a distraction from my anxiety as we waited for our names to be called.
Today, out of all days, was the day we were getting to see the baby for the first time. Like, for real.
‘Do you think our little nugget is going to hide today? If he’s anything like me, he’ll come out and say hi.’ Nate mindlinked us.
You could tell the Alpha was proud, but as always, Nate was sure to be an ass about it. He really had to let Theo hear him brag about the pup.
Immediately, Theo growled, giving the other Alpha a death glare.
‘You mean if he’s like me? Cause it’s clearly mine!’ The two were still up to the same old shit, their argument now evolving to who was the supposed father of the baby.
‘Yeah right. Like your shit really works!’ Nate jabbed back. ‘And honestly, if he is yours, then he’ll probably just hide.’
‘Stop assuming the gender of my baby,’ my angry mindlink brought the two to a ceasefire. Clearly, I didn't know who the father was, and frankly, I didn’t care. I didn’t want to be stressed out more than I already was. They both listened, knowing if they caused any more trouble that would lead them both to an extended stint in timeout with no sexy time for an entire week, with the promise of the silent treatment for eternity.
Funny. Maybe I do have this parenting thing down already.
The sounds of a tiny clock ticking carried over us as we continued our agonizing wait. It wouldn’t be long though, the secretary called our names to head toward the back.
‘Now or never, I guess,’ I whispered to River. The toffee wolf had been anxiously grooming himself in my mind, obviously worried about our appointment today.
This was it.
A straining feeling washed over me as I walked through the narrow hallway. Time to find out how our baby was doing.
