“Don’t I look phenomenal today?” Jennifer asked, strutting around the house in her new dress. She had gotten it just the other day, and Katie had said it looked cute and would suit her. Her black hair washed down her back as she stood above Katie, who was laying facedown, dejected on the couch. Her face was pretty much completely obscured by light brown hair.
“Come on,” Jen nudged her eagerly. “How is it? I look amazing, right?! I’m absolutely stunning, right?”
“You look ok…” Katie moaned, not even looking up.
“Get up!” she demanded, pulling Katie’s leg and dragging her to the floor. Katie groaned and turned her face over, grabbing a blanket and curling up in it.
“Not right now…”
“Come on, you said you’d admire me today!”
“I’m really not feeling it…”
“Argh!” Jen stomped. “Stop using the ‘atypical depression rep’ excuse on me all the time! If you were serious about me, you’d take time to compliment me!”
“I compliment you every other day,” Katie sighed, getting up and walking to the fridge. She grabbed a soda and ice cream sandwich then laid back down on the couch.
“So you won’t compliment me today?!”
“You’re getting too worked up, honey,” Katie sighed, taking a bite of ice cream.
“And you’re eating one of my ice cream sandwiches!”
“They’re our ice cream sandwiches.”
“Whatever. I’ll go to someone who does support my appearance!”
Jennifer marched out of the house, slamming the door behind her, making the house shake a little. Katie sighed and picked up her phone, lazily dialing her boss’ number. Naturally, she didn’t pick up and Katie just had to leave a voicemail.
“Sorry Mrs. Debbie, I can’t make it to today’s meeting. I’m… having problems again this time… I promise I’ll try for next week though…”
Katie finished the ice cream, took a sip of soda, and turned off all the lights in the house. Then, she locked the front door and crawled into bed. She glanced at her lock screen. A picture of her and Jen in front of The Council building. Katie was wearing a sweater that had coffee on it, reading “Depresso Espresso” while Jen had a shirt saying “World’s Prettiest Narcissist.” The two of them were each other's arms smiling.
“Oh Jen, what happened…” she sighed. “When did I stop being as special to you?”
Katie put her phone away, silencing the incoming call and just shutting it down entirely. She didn’t want to deal with anything else today. This morning was enough. She peacefully let her mind lull herself back to sleep.
