My Blind Assistant

The Hardest Part

The Hardest Part

Feb 08, 2023

Their bodies are lying on the surface unconsciously. Jung-Ho moves his finger as he is getting conscious. He groans, feeling pain and numbness in his body. Opening his eyes he sees Sook -Ja far away from him and notices blood seeping out of her temple.
He tries to get close to her as he sees the car is flaming. He tries to get to her but he can't move an inch. His legs feel heavy and his whole body hurts as he tries to get up. "Sook-Ja, get up please." He says, calling her name weakly.
After getting so much affect he manages to get close to her. He leans over and kisses her temple, feeling her warm skin against his lips. "Stay with me, stay with me baby, stay." He whispers repeatedly. She moans quietly, trying to open her eyes but fails. Jung-Ho places her head on her lap and starts caressing her cheek.
"Please, just open your eyes." Jung-Ho lightly pats Sook-Ja's cheek.
He is to blame for her current state. Why could he be so careless? He cries out, "Open your eyes," as his own eyes begin to blur. His skull is bruised, and tears are running down his face. He moves his fingers lightly to stroke the side of her cheek. When his hand accidentally bumps against a brand-new wound, he struggles to contain his sobs. It aches worse than anything I've ever experienced, which makes the suffering unbearable. The car is on fire and the flames are rising high into the sky.
He can't help but wonder what will happen to him now as he stares at Sook-Ja's lifeless face. He shouts, "Don't leave me Sook-Ja!" but then collapses next to her out of weakness.
~
Doctors are running in the hallway with two Stretchers taking Sook-Ja and Jung-Ho into the ICU. Doctors run past them and into one of the rooms. After entering the room a doctor checks Sook -Ja's pulse. "Her pulse is weak." He informs the nurses. One of the nurses leaves while another nurse checks Jung-Ho. "We have to inform their families." The nurse nods her head and walks out the emergency room.
~
"What?" Do-Yun asks confusedly. "Ms. Seong's condition is critical and Mr. Gwan is still unconscious." A doctor explains while explaining the situation. Do -Yun frowns and stands up. "I am coming." Saying that he cuts off the call and rushes out of the apartment.
~
As soon as possible Do-Yun reached the hospital along with Mr. Seong and her brother. "Where is my granddaughter?" He roars when he enters the ER. "Mr. Gwan is stable, but he needs to sleep for a couple hours. Ms. Seong has lost quite a lot of blood and is currently very fragile." The doctor explains while looking down nervously. "What?" Mr. Seong asks blankly. "We are sorry." Doctor says and makes his way back to the emergency room.
"What happened to my child?" Mr. Seong cries. "She will be fine." Do-Yun assures him when he is not sure. "I hope so." Mr. Seong looks at his young grandson who is lost in his thoughts. "Grandpa, she will be fine right?" He asks his grandfather in a worried tone. Mr. Seong rubs the back of his head and sighs, sitting on the seat. "Yes, I believe she will." He replies, patting his shoulder gently.
~
"Hello, I am Dr. Dung Chung-Hee." Dr. introduces himself to Do-Yun and Mr. Seong. "I am taking your granddaughter's case." He adds looking at the older man. "That wasn't necessary. You don't need to do that, she is already in a coma. It would take months until she wakes up from it." Mr. Seong tells him in a firm tone. "I think we should let the professionals do their job instead of doing it ourselves." Dr. Chung states looking straight at Mr. Seong. "Fine. Thank you." Mr. Seong says and turns around to sit back on his chair.
"I know it's been a week and she isn't well and about Mr. Gwan, he is awake now." Dr. Chung says while looking at Mrs. Choi. "You can meet him after a while, let me do some tests first." He smiles reassuringly, seeing Mrs. Choi visibly relaxed. "Thank you doctor." Mr. Choi nods her head.
~
"How are you doing now Mr. Gwan?" Dr. Dung asks after checking him up. "I'm doing okay thank you doctor." He answers. "Good good. Your family is outside waiting for you to wake up. Do you want me to bring them inside?" He asks politely, smiling. "Yes please." Mr. Gwan replies as he continues looking at the doctor.
"How is Ms. Seong?" He asks, making Dr. Dung sigh. "She is in a coma." He responds sadly. "A coma?" He questions in worry, rubbing his forehead tiredly. "Well, we found you both on the road during the accident. She was knocked unconscious from the crash." The doctor explained. "Is she going to be alright?" Jung-Ho questions in fear.
"Oh don't worry sir. We have all kinds of doctors working on her. She is going to be perfectly fine." He reassures him. "Can I see her?" Jung-Ho asks, making him shake his head. "It won't be possible now. Her condition is unstable. We can't predict how long she may remain unconscious, we need to check how serious her injuries were and how bad the concussion is. So we have to wait until the swelling has reduced. "Please save her." Dr. Dung sees pain and hope in Jung-Ho's eyes. "Don't worry, she will be fine." He tells him confidently.
~
"Hey, wake up, it's been a month." Jung-Ho says while holding Sook-Ja's hand in his. "I missed you around me. Please, just wake up already. How long are you gonna make me worry?" He whispers slightly. Jung-Ho looks at the machine which is making sound. It keeps beeping indicating that Sook-Ja's heart rate hasn't changed yet. He feels his throat burning as fresh tears roll down his cheeks.
"Sook-Ja..." He croaks out softly. "I love you." He adds before kissing her hand. "I'm here. Don't worry, okay?" He smiles sadly.
~
Mrs. Choi looks at Jung-Ho in worry. He has wasted continuously drinking since he came back from the hospital. Every night she hears him crying in the bedroom. Every morning she wakes up finding him sleeping and working without resting. She doesn't know what to say or do. All she wants is to calm him down and take care of him but he is always pushing her away.
She doesn't know how to make things better. "Should I inform Mrs. Gwan about it?" She whispers and sighs. "I hope his mother will do something." She adds and leaves the room silently.
~
Gue-Roo wipes her tears while looking at her and Sook-Ja's picture. "Get well soon love." She says and kisses the picture. She slowly lays down on the bed and closes her eyes, trying to fall asleep but it seems like her brain won't stop thinking about the situation.
"Aren't you sleeping?" Ye-Rim asks as she enters the room. "No." Gue -Re responds while looking at the ceiling. "Okay.." Ye-Rim says and sits down beside her sister on the bed. "Are you happy now?" Gue-Roo asks and shifts her gaze on Ye-Rim, making her confused. "Excuse me?" She asks, raising an eyebrow. "Are you really happy now? Because somehow you are the reason for Sook-Ja's condition." Gue-Roo asks again, staring into her eyes. Ye-Rim stays silent and doesn't deny. "I told you to stop." Gue-Roo sobs, causing her sister's eyes to tear up. "Go away and live with Do-Yun now." She says as more tears stream down her face. Ye-Rim gets up and walks out of the room. Gue-Roo sighs and wipes her tears.

"Take my hand, I am here with you." He says in a deep husky voice catching her out of gaud. "I can't, I can't do it, please go. Save yourself." She yells back as the car's brakes fail.
"Dr, Dr. I can't see." While panicking she cries. "I am sorry Sir, she lost her eyes." His body gets numb and drops himself on the bench near him.
"But, you always said you love me." "I am sorry. I can't stay with you, it's about my whole life." "I always treated you like my sister. How could you do that to me?"
"Who's gonna earn money for us now grandpa?" Little boy says, glancing at his blind sister. "I wish I could die."
