The cool gentle breeze of autumn flowed through Jade's hair as the three of them relaxed under their spot on the hill. Agate fell asleep a while ago after the events that happened minutes prior. Jade looks back at Agate, he's cuddled up in the blankets that they gathered together as kids, the one that he's covered in one that the three of them had made together quite recently. It was mainly Carnelian that made it because he knows how to crochet, but they all came up with the lovely designs that it displays out to the forest that surrounds them.
Carnelian looked up at Jade and nudged her slightly, "What you doin' lookin' back at our sleeping man?"
She turned to Carnelian and shrugged, "I don't know man, he just looks really goofy sleeping. I mean like, look at him." She chuckled and pointed to him, a stray loc found its way into his mouth as he snored the day away.
Carnelian giggled and leaned on Jade, "I mean you ain't wrong, but he needs his sleep. Like just look at him. He never naps."
"Less of a nap and more of a whole night's sleep I'd say." Jade leaned on Carnelian and looked at his phone, he had the notes app open and he was writing in it. "What are you doing CarCar?"
"Oh. I'm making a nice little list of things we can do when Agate wakes up. Cause today's his birthday and all."
Jade's face lights up and she nods aggressively. "Thats right! I honestly forgot. Shitty thing for me to do but I did. Don't fault me on that CarCar."
"I don't have to. You're doing that yourself." He chuckled, "and keep your voice down sweetie. He's still sleeping."
She made a surprised gasping face and quickly turned back to check if he's still sleeping. He was but he just shifted a little bit, his face looked really tired and worn. Her expression changed to one of worry as she turned back to face the town where moving cars and the hustle of the day can be easily seen. She sighed, a slight frown on her face.
"..."
Car glanced at her face then put his phone down. He sat up and slightly moved his wavy orange hair out of his face. He put an arm around her shoulder and spoke in his soft voice, "What's wrong Jade?"
She hesitated a bit before letting loose, "I- I just feel awful you know? We ain't know this and we ain't know that bout how he was feeling and- and we should have known-" she paused, clearly trying not to cry but her voice was giving this away as it was very shaky. She looked down and fiddled with her hands, "I just feel like a bad friend you know?" A big sniffle followed.
Car patted her back, "Hey hey hey. Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Putting yourself down isn't going to help anyone. Like, at all." Jade raised her gaze to meet his, his eyes are calm and warm, and those soft orange eyes shimmered and shined in the sunlight, but a slight melancholy rested behind that softness. Those eyes of his are what captivated Jade in the first place, they were friends since they were little but the way that Carnelian gazed at her and everyone around him made her feel safe. That she could be vulnerable, that she didn't need to be rough and tough all the time. She nodded then he patted her back. "It's probably, well, it is going to be hard to forgive yourself for this. Oh and don't get me wrong, it's going to be hard for me too. But the best way we can make up for this is learning from what we did wrong and fixing our actions."
Jade smiled slightly and nodded, "Alrighty. Now, where did you learn this that didn't sound like you?"
Car put a hand on his chest, grinned, and said in a sing-song tune "My therapist~"
Jade chuckled and nudged him a great deal. "Well good! They fixin' you up a great deal." She laid her head on his shoulder, he smiled softly. "You seem a lot happier Carnelian."
He chuckled as he typed on his phone, still planning out the day ahead of them. "I mean I'm almost always happy Jade."
"I'm talking about you in general silly. Your smile is warmer than before." Jade said with a smile.
Carnelian kept his eyes on his phone, but he smiled. It was a subtle but soft smile that warmed his heart. "Thank you for noticing. I've been working hard." A warm feeling spread throughout his chest and face. Pure joy and embarrassment dispersed throughout his heart, body, and soul. His face changed colors, his light brown skin flaring up in a warm red around his ears, neck, and cheeks. He looks up at her, his face showing what only could be described as embarrassed excitement radiating from him, he leans in and gives Jade a gentle peck on the cheek. A smile sneaks its way onto Jade's face, clearly, she's fighting a battle to show her smile or not.
He just smiles and leans closer to her and says under his breath.
"I love you."
Jade is silent for a while before kissing him back with a soft smile gently resting on her face and whispering into his ear. "I love you too."
~~~~~~~~~~
Agate was rudely awakened by a strong hand aggressively shaking them. Startled out of their slumber they jolt up and a phone is rudely shoved into his face. "Huh-"
Jade got up in his face and yelled, "Wake up sleepy head! It's 12 pm and that means it's game time fun time haha silly birthday time!" She yelled so hard and loud that her face turned red and she had to take a deep breath before continuing. "Get up now!!"
Carnelian chuckled and moved Jade out of his face. He smiled, "well you heard her. Get up before she starts yelling again."
Agate quickly woke up and practically jumped up to his feet and to attention. "My ears couldn't take any more of her yelling anyways."
"Don't even start mister. I'd have you calling me aunty in two seconds flat."
"Did you mean Uncle?"
"Did it look like I meant Uncle?"
Agate gave her a flat stare and then turned to Carnelian. "Get your girl."
He smiled and put her in a headlock, just hard enough to keep her captive. He gasped and started to struggle her way out, giggling the whole time.
"Raaaaa! Let go of me stinky!"
Carnelian just ignored her and kept talking to Agate. "Well happy birthday man. We're going to try and make this the best day ever for you."
Agate smiled and fiddled with his favorite tank top under his school jacket. It's a reddish pink color with a darker pastel red tree on his left-hand side. "Thanks man, y'all are the best."
Jade finally escaped Carnelian's death grip and stole his phone out of his pocket and opened the notes. She walked over to Agate and grinned. "Well since you think we're the best of the best best friends! Follow me and we'll show you a hell of a time."
Agate with a smile on his face nodded. "Well let's get a move on then compadre!"
Car walked up to Agate and put a hand on his shoulder. "You have to stop saying that. I'm begging on my hands and knees."
"Well I don't see you kneeling."
Carnelian gave him a quick look and said in an exasperated voice. "Oh you know what I-" but he gets cut off before he could finish.
"Mmmmmm! Nope. I don't." He quickly turned to Jade with and cheeky grin. "Jade! Activate operation ditch em'!"
She aggressively nods and they book it down. Carnelian looks in shock and horror as they disappear out of sight.
"Guys! Hey! Wait for me!" He yells as he finally jogs after them. "I'm- im not as fit as y'all!! Wait up!"
After a bit of running Carnelian finally caught up to Jade and Agate who were at the first location for their day, Agate's favorite arcade and place to hang out with his friends. It was a retro arcade, clearly, the place didn't feel the need to update the look of the place.
As he walked inside he looked around to see where exactly they are. True to what he saw last time, nothing has changed. The classic '80s arcade flooring that looks newer for they just replaced the old grimy version with the exact same copy of it. The cheesy arcade music playing in the background as the sounds of games being played on and children screaming fill the air. The smell of sickeningly fatty foods filters out from the arcade making Carneilians stomach turn inside out and his nose recoil into his body. He spotted Agate and Jade up at the counter where they buy their tokens, he hurries over there, still out of breath from running all this way.
"J-Jade. Agate. You- you fucking dicks." He said in panted breaths as he came to a stop. Hunching over, his hands on his knees to catch his breath.
Jade smacked him on the back and spoke in a mocking British voice that slowly changed into an Australian one. "Well don't be such a party pooper slow poke. Maybe if y'a had more muscle than chubby you'd be a bit faster mate."
He didn't even look up at her and just smacked her knee. She dramatically fell on the floor, acting like she just died.
"Look at hall acting a fool. Shame shame shame doing this on my birthday. I thought y'all were my friends and you're acting like straight goons." Agate whined in a mocking voice.
"You want some of what she just got?"
"No."
"Good."
Jade quickly sprung up and ran to Agate's side and put Carnelian's phone right up in Agate's face for a bit before they both ginned. Carnelian looked at them both, tired of their antics.
"Oh CarCar. It's our poor friend's birthday and you didn't get him a gift!?" Jade said in a clearly faking voice.
"Huh-?"
Agate fake Cries into Jade's shoulder, and she pats his back. "Shhhhhh I know I know my sweet baby boy who's an adult technically today but who cares since it's- but that's besides the point. Poor baby boy here is so so upset. So you should pay for his tokens."
Carnelian looked at the both of them like they were stupid. "But you didn't get him anything either!? And my-"
She pulls and rubber duck out of her pocket and puts it on Agate's back. "You were saying?"
"... fine! I was going to do it anyways but y'all just had to go and pull this shit." He said as he chuckled, pulling his wallet out of his pant pocket.
Agate stood up all giddy and excited for the day they had planned for him. His cheeks slightly hurt from all the smiling he's been doing and the ideas of what's to come rumbling in his head. His foot taps to the beat of the horrid music playing all around him. His heart couldn't beat any faster from the pure excitement he's feeling. His best birthday ever is happening now, right in front of him and he couldn't be even happier.
