Somewhere off in another universe…
Patiently waiting at the dinner table, Jax rested his cheek on his palm. He had taken the day off of work and instead spent it preparing a fabulous dinner and arranging the table meticulously. He wanted everything to be perfect by the time Logan came home.
He perked up as he heard the front door open. He straightened his clothing as he waited for Logan to walk down the hallway. To his surprise, the door closed instead.
Jax’s eyes went wide. Is it too much? Fuck, why did he just leave?
He mulled over the previous moment, searching his brain for anything that could have caused Logan to do such a thing. Finding nothing, his brain reeled as he tried to find the cause of his lover’s actions. As he was thinking, the creak of the door hinges met his ears once more.
“Logan?” he called softly down the hallway. This time, the door didn’t close. Instead, the light tap of footsteps echoed through the hall.
After only a few seconds, his partner came into view. His eyes were wide and his cheeks flushed with a light blush as he took in the scene before him.
“This is—“
Jax cut him off. “I’m sorry if it’s too much. I just thought it’d be nice to—“
This time, it was Jax’s turn to be interrupted. “—Lovely.”
Jax’s heart skipped a beat. He stopped his rambling and smiled at his partner. “I’m glad you like it,” he said this time, a stark contrast to his words a moment ago.
Logan pulled the chair opposite Jax from underneath the table and sat down. He glanced at his plate and raised an eyebrow, a light smile dancing across his lips. “What’s on the menu, good sir? I smell something delicious.”
Jax cleared his throat. “Well, we have a wagyu steak, courtesy of your fine boyfriend—“ Logan chucked at that. “—and steamed asparagus with a touch of salt, paired with some red wine,” He stated, doing his best to feign formality.
Logan let out a gentle laugh. “Well, then, I’ll have to have a taste of this food,” he said, picking up his fork and knife and cutting into the steak. He let out a groan as the flavour reached his tongue. “Mmph. Very good indeed,” he said after chewing and swallowing his first bite.
They chatted over dinner, the food on their plates gradually disappearing as well.
Once their plates had been cleared, Jax cleared his throat and swallowed nervously. Then again, and again. Logan looked at him with a wrinkled brow. “You alright?” he asked cautiously.
Jax nodded, shoving his hand into his pocket. “Listen, Logan— I, uh. I wanted to take you to a nice restaurant because that would have been more of a treat than a steak in my opinion and—“ He cut himself off and took a deep breath. “—And I think you’d hate for me to do this in public.”
Logan quirked an eyebrow, intrigued.
“Logan,” he began again. “I love you. I have since high school, and I always will. So,” He got up from his seat and knelt on the ground, pressing one knee and one foot into the wooden floor. From his pocket, he drew a velvety box. “I’d love to be able to love you for the rest of our lives.” He paused for a short second to take in his lover’s expression. Logan’s eyes were once again wide, the blue and green irises fully visible. His cheeks were flushed a deeper red than they had been before, and his eyebrows were raised.
Jax glanced down, too nervous to look his partner in the eye as he asked a final question. He opened the box to reveal a silver ring with a single diamond in the centre.
“Logan Michael Matthews, will you marry me?”
Jax heard a light sob escape Logan’s lips. His face fell from the smile he had been holding there. “Logan, you know you don’t have to—“
For the umpteenth time that night, he was cut off. “Yes,” Logan cried. “Goodness, yes!”
Jax’s breath caught in his throat. He stood and wrapped his arms around his partner—fiancé. He caught Logan’s lips in a slow and passionate kiss for no more than a few seconds. When they broke away, he took his lover’s hand in his own. He plucked the ring from the box and slid it onto Logan’s, kissing the back of his hand right after.
“I love you,” he whispered gently as he pulled Logan back into his embrace.
“Love you more,” Logan muttered into Jax’s ear, sniffling.
Jax smiled as he embraced his fiancé, letting the realisation that they were getting married set in.
It had been quite a lovely night, and neither would have it any other way.
