Mother asked if I wanted to join her for a walk, and I agreed. The road was the same that led to the castle. Again, she brought the basket with bread.
"You are bringing bread for your friend?"
I asked.
"That's right, Louise."
Camille replied. She thought I was her innocent baby girl, but she was wrong. I was an adult stuck in this fragile body, and I knew something else was happening between Camille and her 'friend.'
"Ok then, I will wait for you in the gates as before, correct?"
"Good girl."
She left me while doing her... let's call it 'duties.' In the meantime, I head to the spot where I met Charles. It was a nice and quiet place to enjoy my reading, surrounded by flowers, bushes, pines, and a pond.
"You again?"
Charles said as he arrived at the same time I did.
"Yes, is there a problem?"
I answered, crossing my arms.
"Listen, I found this place first to be not be disturbed."
"Sure, don't worry. I just want the same."
"Then go somewhere else."
Ignoring Charles, I sat on the soft grass and opened the book I had brought.
"Hey! I'm talking to you!"
The boy was annoyed by my presence and inability to care about others' complaints, which I acquired thanks to having an annoying sibling like Pierre.
Charles gave up and climbed the big tree as last time.
Finishing the novel I was reading, I looked up where the boy was, wondering about the book he had. It was interesting to see a commoner like him or myself interested in literature. Camille and Pierre were very surprised when they found out I loved books, mostly because they didn't know how to read, they asked me who taught me, and I had to lie and say it was a merchant I met one day as I was playing around in the village.
"Where did you learn how to read?"
I questioned Charles.
"A teacher."
He replied coldly. I smiled.
"I'm glad some people from our background still enjoy this."
"You mean, it isn't common?"
"Nope. My brother is around your age; he doesn't even know how to spell his name."
"Really?!"
"Just kidding, I guess that is the only thing he knows how to write and read."
"He sounds really dumb."
"He is. Arrogant and annoying too."
Charles laughed after hearing the description I gave of Pierre. He closed the book and jumped from the tree branch he was sitting at to the ground.
"What do you like to read the most?"
Charles asked as he showed me his book.
"Fairy tales and love stories."
I told him, showing him the novel I was holding.
"You are such a girl..."
"Yeah, a romantic one. What about you?"
"Adventure, fantasy."
"The kind where the protagonist travels around the world and fights monsters and tyrants!? You are such a boy."
"Don't make fun of me."
"It's fine. We all have different tastes."
"You are not as annoying as I thought you were.
The young boy seemed more comfortable around me. I laughed and said goodbye as I heard Camille calling for me.
"You can come again. If you want to."
Charles said, trying to hide his smile.
“I’ll see you soon.”
I reached Camille and left that place.
Having a kid as my only friend since I reincarnated could be funny. As the soul of an adult, I felt obligated to keep him company as Charles was just a boy and needed supervision.
"Did you have fun reading?"
Camille asked, taking the book from my hands.
"Yes, Camille, it was interesting."
"Again, with that? Call me mommy as you used to."
"I'm not a kid."
"Wrong, you are still a kid."
I felt annoyed; in some way, we both were right.
