Clarie greeted us at the end of the hall. She ushered us inside one of the patient rooms, where we all barely fitted into the tiny space. Packed like sardines, we found respective places to sit. The walls were painted a faded blue with a bunch of colorful ads. Some advertised what type of birth control to use, others were anatomical graphics of genital parts. None of which gave me any sort of comfort, but it was definitely a welcome distraction from what was about to happen.
“So, how’s everyone been doing?” Cheery as ever, Clarie greeted us with a warm smile. “Remy, any new symptoms to report?” she asked.
“Hmm, no. I’ve been good.” The nausea had faded away quickly and my appetite had returned. All things that were a good sign of steady progress.
“No complaints I see. That’s awesome.” The woman turned on the bulky ultrasound machine, dimming the lights so she could focus on the next task.
I adjusted myself on the exam table, reclining on the thin paper film so I could get more comfortable. Theo and Nate sat in the small plastic chairs on my left, all of us turning our attention to the flat-screen TV in the far right corner.
“Now, let’s check out that belly of yours,” Clarie beamed, gently coaxing me to reveal my stomach. Hands all sweaty, I dragged my hoodie and top up. I wasn’t that big, but you could tell I had gained a few pounds. My belly always looked bloated, like I had just eaten, which only added to my own insecurities.
Cold gel was delicately spread on my skin before Clarie rubbed a large probe wand on my stomach. The room was silent. Not a soul stirred. Everyone was holding their breath for the next part. My eyes trained on Clarie's every movement. Adjusting her grip on the white probe, the woman moved it around some more before she clicked a few things on the keyboard.
Next, came the sound that would change everything—a loud, steady heartbeat.
“That’s your pup’s heartbeat,” the healer revealed. I didn’t expect to get so emotional. Instantly, my first reaction was to cry. Tears trickled down my cheeks as I listened to the rhythmic sound. Everything hit me at once.
I’m really pregnant…
It was completely surreal to hear such a familiar sound projecting from the ultrasound machine.
I was pregnant, a guy, me—pregnant. Seriously, you just can’t make this shit up.
Glancing over at my mates, I also got a surprise of a lifetime too. Nate was trying to fight off the tears but lost, a steady stream flowing down, where Theo held himself together but his forest green eyes were on the verge of giving in too. The Alphas had forgone their tough facade, immediately melting at the sight of our little one. At that very moment, no one cared who the father was. They were just genuinely happy to see a glimpse of the new life inside me.
“That’s a strong heartbeat, a great sign that the baby is doing well,” Clarie said softly. The woman was also emotional, wiping a fallen tear as she tried to stay focused on the task.
“Now, let’s see where the little bugger is hiding.” Up for the challenge, Claire guided the large probe around my stomach, searching for the tiny soul. My eyes were affixed to the TV screen, trying to figure out what any of those grainy gray images could mean. It was still hard to tell though. My eyes strained to make sense of it all.
“Hold on, I think I found something.” Clarie moved the probe a tad bit over to the right, revealing a round, oval shape on the screen.
“Is that—?”
“Yep, that’s your baby, Remy.” She zoomed in a bit more, taking pictures of the results. I looked over to Theo and Nate, both Alphas leaning over to get a good look at the image as well.
“It’s so tiny.” I was mesmerized. Such a small thing could make me eat so much food. You would think I had a huge parasitic worm thriving inside of me.
“I’m just taking a few measurements. From what I can tell, you're about nine weeks along. So, just a little over your projected time frame,” Clarie informed the room.
“Woah.” My mind was still reeling from this whole thing. I still couldn’t get over the fact that I had a living thing inside of me.
River stood by, silently watching. The wolf offered no words, just a quiet fascination.
“You can see here, the little bean is floating along. Everything looks good. Just need to take a—”
Clarie cut her words short. Her eyes narrowed as she checked over the scans.
“What? Is there something wrong?” My mind was racing, irrationally panicking at the fact that something had happened to the pup so quickly. The Alphas were immediately put on high alert. Nate anxiously tapped his foot as Theo stared a hole through the TV screen, a live wire of nerves shared between us three.
“No, everything is fine, it’s just I think—” Claire leaned in closer. All of us shifted in our seats, trying to make out whatever had silenced the healer.
“Wow… just wow,” she chuckled before she zoomed in further. “Looks like there’s gonna be two pups walking around Rosewood Creek this fall.”
“Two?!” Nate sputtered, sharing the same wild look in Theo’s eyes.
“Two?!” I had to repeat the same question.
There are two babies… oh, you gotta be fucking kidding me!
A defeated sigh left my lips, listening to River curse the moon goddess some more.
“Looks like double trouble is coming to town,” Claire let out a cute chuckle before she zoomed in on the final image, showing not one but two visible oval blobs on the screen.
‘Why?’ I offered my pleaful woes to the moon goddess as well.
One baby was going to be a lot, but I just had to have two.
Nate's shocked face twisted into a goofy smile, a glint of mischief in his brown eyes as he eagerly took the printed-out sonogram images from Clarie.
‘I never miss,’ he snickered, doing an obnoxious motion of throwing an invisible basketball into a net, obviously alluding that he had now claimed both pups in my womb.
Theo threatened to use his sharp canines before snatching the pictures from the other Alpha’s hands, the two completely immature as they fought over the images.
Claire sucked her teeth, rolling her eyes as she handed me my own personal copy.
“Is there a way I can get a DNA test? Like right now?” I didn’t want to wait to find out the paternal status. At this point, I just needed them to cut their shit out.
“Unfortunately, it’s too early for that.” Claire gave the Alphas a stern look, tired of their stupid antics.
“I don’t think it would help either,” she huffed. Wiping the sticky gel off my belly with a paper towel.
She flipped on the lights. The brief adjustment period for our eyes seemed to halt the boys' buffoonery.
The healer continued her assessment, measuring the height of my belly before she gently pressed around a little.
“Looks like everything is all set. Now that we know you're carrying two pups, you will have to be careful with your body.” It was a fair warning.
“Even though you're an Omega, carrying more than one baby at a time could put a strain on you and potentially be a hard birthing process. Depending on how big they get, you might have to do a C-section.” Clarie offered her words of wisdom.
The talk of surgery or anything invasive immediately put me on edge, and I began fretting over the unknown.
“Surgery? I mean is it possible to avoid that?” The male birthing process had already been explained to me before and the details were quite graphic to get into, but I couldn’t tell what was worse at this point.
“I mean we can always try to stick to your birthing plan but I’m telling you now. In a month or so, you're going to be a lot bigger than you are now and it’s going to be difficult for you to safely birth these two.” Claire’s words were straight to the point.
Fear pushed me to swallow the hard truth. I didn’t want to do anything that could jeopardize the baby…I mean the babies’ health. Worry ate at me as I contemplated my options.
“Don’t fret too much about it, Remy, it’s gonna be alright. Most werewolves have gone through what you're feeling right now. I mean, hell, even I had a complicated birth with Cleo. I just want you to focus on the positive things and surround yourself with good energy.” She curled her lips into a gentle smile before she removed her gloves, and washed her hands in the sink.
“Thanks, Clarie.” I appreciated her honesty. Having her around really helped me process the heaviness of the soon to arrive new additions.
“Anytime.” She finished drying her hands off. “Have any more questions?” She opened the floor to include the Alphas.
Without further ado, the guys ran through a long list of inquiries; they subjected Claire to every single question under the sun. When they were finally done, Claire looked over at me, waiting to hear my concerns.
“Umm, I do have one. Is it normal to not feel the baby—I mean feel them moving?”
“Oh, that’s a good question. So because you're a bit earlier, it won’t be until the 14-week mark, so about another month.”
“Right. Got it.”
“And remember, Remy, a werewolf's gestation period is shorter than a traditional human's. So by the fifth month, you’ll be ready to give birth. I don’t want you to be surprised by how big your pups grow in the next few months.” She cautioned me about the unfamiliar circumstances I found myself in. Clearly, she didn’t want me to get any more surprised than I already was and was concerned I would forget again.
“Yeah, I know.” It was crazy to think by fall I would have not one, but two babies to take care of. Like, I didn't even have a crib or even a baby’s room picked out yet. Practical shit most people had months to do, but for me, it felt like everything was being rushed. The stress was beginning to build up. A slow-moving migraine sucked the last bit of energy from me as I retired from fighting my anxious thoughts. River had gone into hiding—not a good sign.
Clarie gave her goodbyes as I checked out at the front desk. As I trailed behind the Alphas in the parking lot, my head locked in a painful struggle to find peace.
How am I going to do this? Two babies? That’s like double the work!
Having two mates was already too much.
“Remy.” The sound of my name stopped me in my tracks. Theo, within a single breath, had returned to my side.
“I’m gonna need you to stop worrying.”
“How did you—”
“Curly, I seriously can’t believe how forgetful you are. Must be that preggo brain of yours.” Nate teasingly poked at me.
“We’re your mates, remember?” Nate had strolled back to me, the Alphas were by my side now.
“You’re not alone, okay. We’re just as scared as you are, but we have each other. And that’s what matters the most,” Theo gave a firm speech, drilling it into my head that everything was going to be okay. Even River emerged. The Alpha gave him some sort of comfort as well.
It was hard to forget I wasn’t that kid in the group home anymore. My abandonment issues aside, I needed to trust the bond I had with Theo and Nate. I had to give them a lot of credit. Most people would have turned and left if they found out their new partner was pregnant. I was fortunate our story wasn’t ending like an episode of Sixteen and Pregnant.
Taking a deep breath, I gave them a smile.
“Yeah, you're right. It’s just difficult for me.” I looked off to the distance, watching the mid-afternoon traffic through midtown. Life was different, and I had to keep reminding myself it was okay to be happy.
“I’m trying, but I’m happy to have you guys in my life.” Swept in a wave of emotions, I let myself be taken into a warm group hug. The smothering helped to drown my fears out with their love. The warm light guided me through my dark thoughts.
It was going to be okay.
The future looked so unpredictable at this moment in time but I still could count on the Alphas to be by my side and now two more souls too.
“Do you think they’ll have my hair?” I changed the subject.
“I hope so,” Nate was dead set on his opinion. Theo agreed with his sentiments. It was all Nate gushed about these days—having a mini Curly running around his legs.
“If they do, you’re gonna be doing their hair cuz that ain’t gonna be me.” I didn’t like the idea of having two more heads on hair days.
Ooof. Talk about a handful.
A low rumble from my stomach broke up the wholesomeness.
“Looks like the pups are hungry.” Theo smirked, letting go. We all headed toward the truck.
“How about we go to Pop’s Diner? They got that chocolate shake you really like, Curly,” Nate said, sweetening the deal.
“Mmmm,” my tongue was already salivating. I was ready to eat. Especially since I wasn’t paying for the meal either.
About to break their wallets. All-you-can-eat-buffet here I come!
Walking hand in hand, I thought of all the things I would order off the menu when a familiar alarm began to go off.
‘Attention. This is an RICP emergency broadcast. Attention. This is an RICP emergency broadcast…’
It was the sound of our lunch date being canceled. In the chilly wake of the formal announcement, the Alphas and I share the same look—confusion.
Standing in the shifting wind, we all froze. Unsure of what to do next, my heart raced.
What emergency?
There was an endless list of possible things that could trigger that now, and none of those things would end well.
Soon, another mindlink came through, this time from Kira.
‘Tyrus has returned.’ Her voice strangely drifted in my head. My stomach dropped.
Immediately, the energy switched, a dark cloud over our bright future. Without notice, we all took off. Me more so to catch up with the Alphas that charged ahead to the truck. There was only one thing on their mind—one I didn’t have to say to understand.
Revenge.
