"OK, guys, today were exploring the northwest perimeter. Well, just be doing a routine checkup."
We drove for hours, the others were talking, and I just kept quiet and watched out the window. Occasionally I saw a walker or group eating something and mindlessly walking forward.
Eventually, we stopped. There was a metal fence spanning farther than I could see.
"Everyone, we're stopping here for lunch."
I followed as everyone walked into an abandoned building, half crushed by another building, having fallen on it. The inside was trashed, food is thrown all across the walls, and ripped tents.
"Someone's been here."
Frank pulled his pistol out and held a flashlight under it. I'm pretty sure he used to be a cop or was in the military.
"Everyone get ready. We might have company."
Everyone pulled out their gun, so I followed and pulled out my small revolver and held it forward.
"Shoro and Nora head in."
That surprised me, I had forgotten it was my job to go first in situations like this to scope out the area for danger.
We walked into the dark building through the open door, which used to be a window, but all the glass was shattered. I moved my flashlight around, and I could barely see little shadows running to escape the light. My fear level had reached the max, and I felt like I would scream if anyone even touched me. We kept walking forward into the dark hallway. I was right behind Nora. As she walked around the corner, she disappeared from sight only for a second. As I turned the corner, she wasn't there.
"Nora," I quietly yelled. No response. My first response was to run for my life, but I braved up and continued forward, holding my gun hard and my finger ready at the trigger. There was a noise from the end of the hall, but I couldn't see what it was even with the light from my flashlight. It was pitch black even though my flashlight shined directly on it. I inched ever closer. A click-click noise started. My flashlight light had started shining on that area as if the darkness had moved. In the light was a dead body. Its chest and stomach were split open. There were no organs or bones, just a corpse with blood around it. The face was gone, skinned off. The click-click noise started again.
I ran.
All the way down the hall and the click-click noise got louder. I couldn't hear any footsteps behind me. Maybe because I was running so fast, causing so much noise, or something else. All I could think about was escape. I ran down the hall making all the tuns we had just walked through, but it never seemed like I was getting close to the exit.
A light at the end of the tunnel.
I could see a faint light coming from far down the hallway. I reached the light and jumped through the hole. Where was it? The car, is gone. My team, is gone. All there was, there was empty land. I tried walking forward, but the ground under me collapsed. I stepped back so as not to fall. There was now a huge ravine in the ground spanning across the horizon. I turned back to the building and saw nothing but empty darkness. Somehow, along the way I had dropped my flashlight. The click-click noise. A dark shadow swam across the floor of darkness.
It was coming toward me. There was nowhere I could go.
I was trapped between darkness and a massive ravine.
The world as I knew would never be the same after that day.
The world goes on as normal when suddenly missiles are launched across the world and it's set in the apocalypse.
